AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY LITTLE ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION Phone (02) 6247 1296 Fax (02) 6247 1297 Email: [email protected] www.actlaa.org.au Team Athletics is a unique competition that lines up teams of four people (ages 12 - 17) against each other across various venues in Canberra. The place-based scoring system allocates points for every athlete in each of the events included in the competition. This allows teams to go head-to-head across various events where every team member counts, promoting team spirit and increased participation! It is open to anyone, members or not of athletics. When & Where? January 22 – Cook Oval (Belconnen Wests LAC) February 5 – Banks Oval (Lanyon LAC) February 19 – Dickson Playing Fields (Corroboree LAC) March 5 – Kambah Oval (Tuggeranong LAC) March 8 - Grand Final at AIS, Bruce Times: 4:30 – 6:00 pm Competition structure Team Athletics follows a premiership model, with each competition day adding points to an overall competition. Scores obtained during the Grand Final are worth double. A team does not need to include the same participants on all competition days. However, the teams will need to always have at least two members who competed in the previous competition to represent the team. Each team will also have a team captain who is expected to participate on every competition day, either as a competitor or as a team supporter. Teams can enter the competition at any time of the premiership, however those that compete at all the events will obviously have an advantage in relation to their total point score. Each member of a team may compete in as many events as they like as long as those events are offered in the competition program of that day). For all events except the relays the best two performances of the team in each event will be used to score the performance of the team on that day. The sum of the points scored on each day are used to calculate the premiership table (or ladder). In addition to this, participation will be stimulated by the following: Participants add points for every event in which they compete; i.e. one athlete that competes in 3 events on a particular competition day will add 3 extra points to his team in the premiership classification. This means, every participant counts! Events Different running, jumping and throwing events at the different competitions. The program with events will be announced at the competition venue. The events may include: Track – 100m, 200m, 800m, boys 100m hurdles (84cm)/ girls 90m hurdles (76cms), Swedish relay (100m, 300m, 200m, 400m), 4x100, 4x400. Field - Javelin, Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump Age group specifications (U14, U16 & U18) will be used for hurdles & throws events. Each athlete will throw the implement and run hurdles heights according to their current age group, but they all will compete in a same competition. This will give all athletes the same chance of winning regardless of their age. Track Relay events will be handicapped based on the average age of the team members as it follows: 1 second/100 meters/year difference. As an example, a team with 4 members averaging 17 years of age that runs the 4x100, will need to run 4 seconds faster to beat a team that averages 13 years in that event. Likewise, a team that averages 15 years that runs 3 minutes in the medley Swedish relay (1000 meters) will be as good as a team that averages 17 and runs 3 minutes 20 seconds over the same distance. For the long and triple jump handicaps will occur as it follows: 1 meter/1 year of average age difference. As an example a team with average age 14 that jumps a total of 10 meters in the long jump equals a team with average age 16 that jumps 12 meters in total. Please note that, as mentioned above, the best two performances of the team in each event will be used to score the performance of the team on that event. Teams can be mixed, boys only or girls only, as long as they have at least 4 participants in the team in the ages of 12-17. On site promotion Pre-event activities will include live music performances. Post-event activities will include award ceremonies to honor key participants, dinner and autograph sessions, refreshments and souvenirs. Costs & registration LAACT & AACT members free.
