Malaysian Cultural Night University of Michigan Of Culture and Global Tourism Winter 2013 Production of MiMSA 2 MALAYSIAN CULTURAL NIGHT 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 2.0 Throughout the ages, the rivalry between tradition and modernity has always been prevalent. In the Malaysian context, where her inhabitants are diverse and of various origins, memories are important as to preserve the unique heritage of each different ethnic. Therefore, Malaysian Cultural Night 2013 (MCN ’13) themed “Treasuring the Forgotten” is an attempt to reconnect the forgotten memories that defined Malaysians, to Malaysians themselves so that these important memories will not be buried, forgotten. The essence of this performance will linger in the minds of everyone, whether you are Malaysian or otherwise, memories of the past, the forgotten will be treasured henceforth. An event that will rekindle the font memoirs of your childhood and allow you relive those times. OBJECTIVES AND GOAL 2.1 MCN upholds the vision of promoting Malaysian culture to the university community at large. MCN meets these objectives because it: 2.1.1 Serves as an opportunity for U of M students to taste Malaysian delicacies of various sorts and to experience the dances and cultural performances of diverse ethnic groups in Malaysia (Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan etc) 2.1.2 Promote dialogues about culture and tradition, stimulate other forms of intercultural exchange among audience and enhance cultural awareness. 2.1.3 Encourage the campus community to learn more about Malaysia and experience the Malaysian culture. 2.1.4 Serve as a venue for the exploration of humanities in South East Asia where students are invited to cross the boundaries of South East Asia and of disciplines to develop two vital qualities: a deep local knowledge and a broad global perspective. 2.1.5 Function as an alcohol-free and safe outlet for students on a Saturday evening. 2.1.6 Reinforce rapport among Malaysians as we work together in a team to organize a large event 3.0 EVENT DETAIL 3.1 Here is the details of “ TREASURING THE FORGOTTEN 2013”: 3 MALAYSIAN CULTURAL NIGHT 3.1.1 Date: MARCH 23RD 2013 3.1.2 Time: 5pm to 9:00 pm 3.1.3 Venue: 4804 EAST HALL, 530 Church Street Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1043 (Seating capacity: 400 people) 4.0 EVENT TIMELINE 4.1 Tentative of “ TREASURING THE FORGOTTEN 2013” Time MARCH 23rd, 5.00— 7.30pm Activity “TREASURING THE FORGOTTEN 2013” - A play about contemporary Malaysian culture incorporating a range of cultural performances, all performed by Malaysians Place 4804 EAST HALL. MARCH 23rd, 7.30— 9.00pm “Taste of Malaysia” - A variety of Malaysian delicacies are provided, including main entrée, appetizer, desserts, and drinks 4804, EAST HALL. “All you need to know about Malaysia” Exhibition - Booths equipped with poster boards and interactive activities - Includes cultural arts and crafts booth, photography booth, Malaysian games, trivia about Malaysia, tourism, dance lessons etc - Guests will have many opportunities to win prizes and collect souvenirs to remember the event 5.0 Target Market 5.1.
