Children and Families: Prevention
Whitby and The Moors Children’s Centre
Prevention service
Children and Families Prevention Service brings together a range of preventative work previously
undertaken by separate services.
The single service:

Operates seamlessly throughout the 0-19 age range;

Eliminates duplication, unnecessary and unhelpful transitions for families;

Has a new way to provide services, including a greater capacity to provide early help in a more
targeted way for children, young people and families; and

Is co-located with the new healthy child team (5-19)
Our vision is that "families in North Yorkshire are able to access readily a range of support to
ensure that their children are safe, happy and well, and that they can flourish at school and in the
wider world".

Children’s Centre Activities
There is something happening most days in every Centre. Often activities take
place in other community venues as well. Activities are open to both parents, Dads
as well as Mums and Grandparents are welcome too! Most activities are for parents
to attend with their young child. Often activities can involve older brothers and
sisters as well, especially in school holiday periods. Sometimes being a parent can
be quite lonely. You can meet other parents through Children’s Centre activities and
have an opportunity to share and discuss the challenges every parent faces.

Volunteering
We need your help. Every Centre needs an extra pair of hands on occasions.
We need volunteers to help with a lot of what we do, ranging from just an hour of
help on one occasion, to parents providing support for regular sessions.
We would be delighted to hear from you if you could help in any way.

Healthy Start Vitamins
Vitamins are essential nutrients that your body
needs. Even though you can get lots of vitamins
from a healthy balanced diet, you still might not
get everything you need at certain times in your
life - such as when you’re pregnant, a new mum
or a small child.
Healthy Start vitamins contain vitamins A, C
and D for children aged from six months to four
years, and folic acid and vitamins C and D for
pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Breastfeeding Support
Midwives, Health Visitors and Children's Centre
staff have been trained and are available to offer
support and information to families across North
Yorkshire. Information on what is available in
your area and how to contact your local health
visiting team can be accessed from the breastfeeding support map in the following link:
http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/article/24091/
You can now receive Health Start vitamins from
Whitby and the Moors Children’s Centre for a
small charge or for free if you are receiving
Healthy Start Vouchers.
