General Introduction
Sport has changed a lot over some
decades with lots of people over the world
watching different kind of sports. One of
the most popular sport is football
therefore it is on television a lot.
1950’s
1950: Joe Mercer (Arsenal) was voted footballer of the
year. England were knocked out of the World Cup by
USA.
1951: Harry Johnston (Blackpool) was voted the
footballer of the year.
1952: Billy Wright (Wolves) was voted the footballer of
the year.
1953: Nat Lofthouse (Bolton) was voted footballer of the
year. Stanley Matthews helped Stoke beat Bolton 4-3
in the F.A Cup final.
1954: Lester Piggot was 18 when he won his first Derby.
He was a
33-1 outsider.
1955: Don Revie (Manchester City) was voted footballer
of the year.
1956: Ray Booty was the first man to cycle 100 miles in
less than four hours.
1957: Tom Finney (Preston) was voted footballer of the
year.
1958: In tennis, 17 year old Christine Truman beat the
Wimbledon champion Althea Gibson in the Wightman
Cup.
1959: Billy Wright captained England on his 100th cap.
1966 World Cup
Most of the 1960’s was dominated by the World Cup. The 1966
World Cup was a huge success for the England football team. In the
group stages England were drawn in a group with France, Mexico
and Uruguay. England blitzed through the group and advanced into
the quarter finals where they faced Argentina at Wembley Stadium.
90,000 fans watched England win 1-0 with an amazing goal by
Geoff Hurst. After that victory they faced Portugal where they won
2-1. In the final they faced West Germany where they beat them
4-2 after extra time and Geoff Hurst scored a classic hat-trick. It was
an amazing victory for England. The top scorer was Portugal’s
Eusebio with 9 goals.

Today
Sport has changed a colossal amount
since it started. There have been changes
like it used to be in black and white but
now it is in colour.
