The Fightin’ Crabs (8-2) came up big in the eighth inning on a
triple by John Tierny (Centenary University) that gave them the
lead for good in a 4-3 victory over the Bluefish (2-9). Trevor
Smith (University of Mount Union) started on the mound for the
Crabs while Trevor Lloyd (Tusculum College) opened the game
for the Bluefish. Across seven innings, Lloyd allowed only one
run and struck out four batters for the Bluefish before ceding
the game to the bullpen. Smith earned a no-decision while
Franklin Miller (Sacred Heart) earned the win on the day, closing
out the game with four innings of one-run ball.
The Crabs struck in the top of the first inning on a 2 out single to
right field by Ben Macdonald (St. Bonaventure University), scoring Sam Graf (Middlebury College).
The Bluefish responded in the bottom of the fourth when
Delmarcus Talley (Virginia State University) singled to left field
with one out. He advanced on a walk to Cody McSwain (Freed
Hardeman University), before a wild pitch and passed ball
brought him home to tie the score. Back to back strikeouts ended the jam for Smith.
In the fifth, the Bluefish took the lead on a single to center by
Macmilan Shoenman (Ashland University), scoring Jake Odom
(Lagrange College).
The Crabs reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the eighth
when Will Sheats (Delgado Community College) reached on a
dropped third strike and Billy Buscetto (Western CT Stae University) followed with a single to right field. John Tierny then walloped the first pitch he saw to the right center gap for a two run
triple. He later scored to make the score 4-2 on a throwing error
by the catcher.
The Bluefish put up a final fight in the bottom of the ninth, following a leadoff double with a bunt single. A sacrifice fly by Kevin Edgar (Mount St Mary College) cut the lead to 4-3 before 2
straight walks loaded the bases. On a swinging strike, the ball
got away from catcher Riley Workman (College at Brockport)
and on a close play, the Bluefish runner was called out after he
initially missed the plate. The third out was made after the
batter lined out to center.
The Crabs will come back tomorrow against the Chesapeake
Suns at 11 AM, while the Bluefish will face the Seagulls at 8 AM.
Both games are at Virginia Wesleyan College.
John Tierny went 3-3 with 2 RBI and a triple in the win
