Definition.
The statistical district can be defined as a subdivision of the territory
of the municipalities created and managed by Statistics Belgium to
disseminate its statistics at a lower level than the municipality (LAU2).

Methodology.
In 1970 and 1981, the breakdown of the municipalities
into statistical districts was based on 1/10,000 topographic maps
and recent orthophotoplans taking into consideration socio-economic,
urbanistic and morphological characteristics. In 2001, the 1981
version was updated in order to cope with the growth of built-up areas,
new infrastructure and some modified administrative
boundaries, with the constraint of data comparability over time.

History.
The statistical districts were created for the 1970 Census.
They were updated for the 1981 Census and finally for the 2001
socio-economic survey.
