Key Information Sets (KIS) Summary: (What are the key points?) Chapter two of the White Paper introduced Key Information Sets (KIS) which universities must publish on their websites by September 2012. There will be a KIS for all undergraduate courses (including part-time and distance learning) planned for 2013-14, on which students at HEIs are registered. The only exceptions are short courses (one year full-time equivalent or less), postgraduate courses (a public information steering group is currently considering the introduction of KIS for PGT courses – consultation will take place 2012/13 with estimated implementation 2014/15), those delivered wholly overseas, and closed courses. Importance: (Why does this matter to the College of Social Science?) The KIS will contain areas of information that students have identified as useful. These areas are: student satisfaction employment and salary data accommodation costs Fees and funding Scheduled teaching and learning time (percentages of taught and independent study). – See further information on how this is calculated Assessment information (percentages of written exams, coursework, practical exams etc). This information will be presented via a widget (either on the online prospectus and/or departmental websites, will be included on the KIS website (to replace Unistats Sept 2012) and will be linked to from the UCAS website. Impact: (What does this mean for the College of Social Science?) The information will be used by students to compare courses across universities. - Feb/Mar 2012* – Module information for every applicable course will be sent from the Planning Office to Departments to check and return. - Planning will also require information on any departmental scholarships or bursaries offered. * Planning may try and do this as part of the Curriculum Planning Process (to prevent duplication) so the timings may vary. Further Information: (Where can people find out more? – Links to websites; relevant contact details etc) KIS Types KIS Type 1 = all single honours degrees plus joint degrees with an intake of more than 20 students. KIS Type 2 = Joint degrees with less than 20 students where a KIS Type 1 exists for each part of the degree eg Mathematics and Management – KIS Type 1 for Mathematics and KIS Type 1 for Management will be used. KIS Type 3 = Joint degrees where KIS Type 1 is not available for both parts of the course. In this case the KIS would be taken from the subject level JACS data. Planning will confirm which courses are in which KIS Type Calculations To create the teaching and learning figures for each year, the modules will be sorted by number of students. From this sorted list, the top modules for that course by student population which add up to 120 credits will be used to calculate the teaching and learning figures.
