Page 2 ANNUAL NU STUDENT CHAPTER LUNCHEON The Boston IIE chapter is once again sponsoring the annual student IIE awards luncheon at Northeastern University. All members of the Boston Chapter are invited to attend. It will take place at 12 noon on April 6 at the Northeastern Faculty Center, 96 The Fenway (Kerr Hall). See map at http://www.coe.neu.edu/Depts/MIE/specialmap.htm. Each year, we give an award to the most outstanding IE student, based on a combination of academic achievement and service to IIE and the IE profession. This event is a nice informal way to meet some of the graduating students (i.e., prospective hires), welcome them into the working world, and "recruit" them into senior chapter activities. If you are interested in attending please contact John Corliss at [email protected] . JUDGES WANTED FOR NU CAPSTONE PRESENTATIONS The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at Northeastern University holds every year at the end of the spring semester the MIE Senior Capstone Design Presentations. This year, the date is Monday, April 11, 2005. Students in the capstone design course work throughout the year to prepare their project. Most of the projects are sponsored by industry. The students and their advisor visit the sponsoring company many times during the year to collect data, exchange information and finally supply their report with results and recommendations. At the beginning of the year, the senior ME and IE class is divided into groups of four to five students. Some times teams are interdisciplinary consisting of both ME and IE students. At the end of the design effort, a working solution, a final report, and a formal presentation are required from each group. Professionals in the field of ME and IE (most frequently NU Alumni) are invited to judge the projects. The jury listens to the presentations, evaluates the groups and chooses the best two groups according to set guidelines, one ME and one IE group. This is a whole day event. It usually begins at 7:30 am with breakfast and an orientation to the day’s events. Students’ presentations are 20 minutes long and begin usually at 8:00 am. The event concludes with a luncheon and award presentations in the Ballroom, Curry Student Center (starting approximately 2:00 pm). This year, there are two IE groups to be evaluated, so we will need three IE jurors. The participation of IE practitioners in this event is a strong motivator for our students and an integral part of the educational process. If you interested to serve as a juror please contact Professor Melachrinoudis at [email protected] . GOT STUDENT PROJECTS? By Professor Benneyan, Northeastern University Call for help! Senior student project ideas needed! As at many schools, here at Northeastern University our seniors take a senior projects course in which they work on teams to bring their IE skills to bear on a real world non-textbook problem. So if you have a potential project that might be appropriate, please let us know! It’s a great way to help students out, tackle a project without internal resources, and develop relationships with students and faculty. If you have any possible projects, please let me know and we can talk more about the specifics and logistics of our course. Contact Prof. Benneyan at [email protected] . Thanks! INVITATION TO BOSTON CHAPTER EVENT AT ANNUAL STUDENT REGIONAL CONFERENCE The Boston chapter is sponsoring a social event at the IIE Regional conference so that students and senior members can interact informally and make new connections. We also hope to use this event to attract more students to joining the Boston chapter, so a good turn out from the senior members is important for success. The date is Friday, April 1, 2005 from 4-7pm at Northeastern University. Please email John Corliss at [email protected] if you will be attending, so that we can plan logistics accordingly. Page 3 2005 OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS The election results are in and everyone who was on the ballot won the election. We also gained some new board members through the write-in process. Here are the 2005 Board of Directors' biographies: John Corliss, President John was first attracted to industrial Engineering when taking an OR course as a freshman at Georgia Tech. The introduction to Hiller & Lieberman’s text discussed the early days of OR during World War II when engineers & scientists were asked by the government to help develop methods to maximize effectiveness. He was excited to find that others were interested in using engineering methods to solve public sector problems. John went on to earn a BS in Urban Systems, and MS in IE and an MS in Public Policy all from Purdue. He feels his training provided a great problem solving methodology and the ability to step into a wide range jobs and quickly grasp the big picture, see how the pieces fit together and be able to make a contribution. During his management and consulting career, John has applied these skills to everything from the creation of a large annual folk festival to the development of a Wastewater Mater Plan for the British Virgin Islands. A resident of Andover, MA, John is currently a Management Engineering consultant providing planning & evaluation, program design and implementation management services. He is a member if IIE to keep up-to-date with advances in the profession as well as training and networking opportunities. His goal is increased participation in the chapter including a full slate of candidate for chapter officers. Else Bettencourt, Treasurer An Electrical Engineering major at Northeastern University, Else switched to the IE program mid-way through the program in order to get away from the black box engineering theory. Having worked for IMG, Raytheon, Stride Rite, Gillette, American Tourist, GTE Sylvania, Else has spent the last six years working for Bose Corporation. Over the years he has specialized in: facility planning, design, and layout; productivity improvement; warehousing and distribution; materials handling; program management; standard cost; value analysis; automation; ergonomics; JIT; ROI; and MTM. Although he no longer works in an IE department, as a Facilities Project Manager he says he is still using 75% of his IE skills. Else, a NU IIE student Chapter member for three years, has been with the IIE Boston Chapter since 1976. A resident of Andover, MA, he has served the chapter as Treasurer, V.P. Membership, and Director for many years. His goal for this year is for the Boston Chapter to once again become fully active (green status) and to increase it's active membership by 50%. Carolyn Kelley, Secretary Carolyn holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. As part of her undergraduate curriculum she completed a year of internships at SEMATCH and Digital Equipment Corporation. After graduation, Carolyn began her career working as a Simulation Engineer at Intel’s Chandler, AZ campus. In 2000, Carolyn transferred to Intel’s Hudson, MA site where she’s held various IE roles, and is currently managing the Industrial Engineering group. A resident of Holden, MA Carolyn is involved in several initiatives to increase young women’s interest in science and engineering including serving as a mentor at WPI’s Women’s Industry Network program as well as delivering engineering workshops at the EcoTarium’s annual Women in Science Conference where the goal is to expose middle school young women to careers in science. Carolyn is enthusiastic about renewing her membership in IIE to learn more about IE applications and advances outside of the semiconductor industry that may be applicable in her current role. James Benneyan, Ph.D., Student Chapter Liaison James Benneyan is an associate professor of industrial engineering and operations research and the director of the Quality and Productivity Laboratory at Northeastern University. He joins the Boston Chapter board after 7 years as faculty advisor to the NU IIE student chapter, director of NU’s FIRST program, and a past board member of IIE’s Society for Health Systems. Prior to joining Northeastern, Jim worked in industry as an engineer for IBM and Digital Equipment Corporation, and was senior systems and quality engineer for Harvard Community Health Plan. Jim’s primary research, consulting, and corporate Page 4 training specialize in quality control, experimental design, and simulation analysis of industrial, healthcare, and service applications. Jim is an active member of IIE and INFORMS, a senior member of the statistics and healthcare divisions of ASQ, and a senior fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Kathy Dawson-Townsend, Webmaster As a freshman, Kathy was drawn to Industrial and Operations Engineering because it combined both the technical (analytical) and non-technical (people skills) sides of business. She felt the possibilities for application of these skills in the real world to be endless. Kathy earned a BS in Industrial and Operations Engineering University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Dayton (Ohio). Kathy finds that her IE training helps her understand the big picture, as well as all the details underneath it. She can apply a process mind-set when solving problems, or trying to improve a workflow or situation. These are life skills even applicable at home when trying to cook, clean, and organize with less time and effort. Kathy’s career has taken her from San Diego to the Technical University in Braunschweig, Germany. A resident of Quincy, she is employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Kathy also serves on the Industrial Engineering Advisory Board, Worcester Polytechnic University. Her goal as a member of Board is to help the Boston IIE Chapter become more relevant to its membership. For that to happen, she emphasizes, “We need to reach out and listen.” Margaret King, Director Originally intending to be a Civil Engineer, Margaret chose Industrial Engineering & Operations Research at the end of her freshman year. She chose IEOR because it allowed her the most flexibility in taking the courses that interested her most. She took Civil Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering courses as her technical electives. Margaret earned a BS in IEOR from UMASS Amherst and has completed several courses towards a MS in Information Systems at Northeastern University. Whenever someone compliments her about how well organized and detail-oriented she is, she comments that it is because of her IE training. After six months of experience as a Manufacturing Engineer and over 12 years in software development, she presently is self-employed. (She helps small to medium sized businesses with affordable websites.) Margaret is experienced in development involving PROGRESS, Oracle PL/SQL, and customizations to Oracle Applications. A resident of Nashua, NH, Margaret is active in several organizations - such as MassWIT and SWE. Margaret values the chance to stay connected to local IEs through the Boston chapter. Margaret has been active with IIE since 1988. She served as President of UMASS Amherst's chapter and was a Conference Chair for the Regional Student conference. She has served as President of IIE Chapter # 30 twice, as well as serving as Secretary, V.P. of Public Relations / Newsletter Editor, and Director. As 2003's President, she led the chapter from Red (inactive) to Yellow (active) status. This past year, as Newsletter Editor, Chapter # 30 won Silver in the 2004 Newsletter Competition. Mike Deglialberti, Director Mike entered Northeastern University originally intending to be an Electrical Engineer. Early in his second year he decided to switch his major to Industrial Engineering. His co-op assignment throughout his education at NU was with Honeywell Information Systems, a firm that he joined upon graduation from Northeastern with his BSIE. After 15 years of practicing traditional Industrial Engineering activities, Mike decided to move into the areas of software development and support. Mike continued with Honeywell and its partner NEC for over 30 years. In 2000, Mike made the move to Intel Corporation in Hudson, Massachusetts, where he currently holds the position of Senior Systems Engineer. Born in New York City, Mike has lived with his family in the relatively quite suburb of Berlin, Massachusetts for 27 years. His wife, Jeanne, has been the Office Manager for a food broker in Worcester for over 10 years. His daughter, Christine, is a graduate of Anna Maria College and plans to attend the University of Connecticut this fall where she will be working towards her Masters in Social Work degree. His son, Keith, is a second year student at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell where he is working towards an MIS degree. Mike was President of the Boston Chapter in the mid 1980’s when the Boston Chapter’s membership grew to over 600 members. Page 5 Bob White, Director Bob, a Warwick, RI native, earned his Bachelors degree at the University of Rhode Island. Since then, his career has lead him to his current position as a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer at Vicor Corporation in Andover, MA. A resident of Nashua, NH, Bob has long been active in the Boston Chapter of IIE previously serving as chapter President. Matt Morrissette, V.P. Programs Matt runs an industrial engineering and operations management consulting practice, More Effective Consulting, based in New Hampshire. He received his manufacturing engineering degree from RIT (Rochester, NY), a school with an elite cooperative education program that allowed him to learn industrial engineering practices at Motorola, who at the time was pioneering the world in Six Sigma. Matt views industrial engineering as a fundamental competency in running any business, and its approach of continuous improvement makes for a great living philosophy. These days, Matt is using industrial engineering to make improvements in New England hospital operations as well as manufacturers across the country. Matt wants to use the strength of the IE Boston Chapter, and other New England organizations to keep industrial engineering in constant forward momentum, especially in New England and places like hospitals where it is often overlooked. He uses the latest tools and techniques like Six Sigma and Lean Thinking and reviews many chapters from the IE handbook! Matt offers more than 13 years of experience as an engineer, manager and consultant in manufacturing and service corporations of Fortune 25 to 1000 firms. Some companies around New England that he has helped include Baxter Healthcare, Instron, Lifespan Hospitals, Lucent Technologies, Nabisco, Raytheon, and Vaupell. Khaled Elsaid, V.P. Public Relations Khaled completed his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering at the American University in Cairo. He then continued to his MS in Industrial Engineering at the University of Central Florida. Khaled’s main focus in his master’s thesis was the use of Rapid Prototyping in the Medical field (Biomodeling). Upon graduation he started working with Biomedical Modeling Inc. BMI as operations manager. BMI is a startup based in Boston, specializing in fabrication of physical models of patient’s anatomy for surgeon to use in preparation and rehearsal for surgery. Biomedical Modeling Inc. helped separate the Guatemalan conjoined twins by providing the surgeons with custom models of the two kids. The team of surgeons used the models to prepare, communicate and analyze the possible routes of separation. The surgery was successful and both kids are living a normal healthy life now. Khaled’s work is not directly related to IE, but he uses his knowledge to optimize company operations. Robert Carey, V.P. Membership Robert is a new addition to the Boston area, currently pursuing his MBA at Harvard Business School. Prior to HBS, he studied Industrial Engineering at Arizona State University. After graduation, Robert moved to Atlanta to work for Delta Air Lines as part of their Operations Strategy group. Besides the pursuits of IE, Robert has two passions: 1.Airplanes (He is a private pilot) and 2. Music (He is a percussionist and currently play with a band here in Boston). Robert looks forward to working with the chapter to grow our membership base. IIE Chapter # 30 Won Silver Award By Margaret King IIE Chapter # 30 participated in the 2004 IIE Newsletter Competition.
