Round 1

Sports Shorts 2017
Round 1, Crystal Brook at Crystal
Brook
Welcome to season 2017, with a new Newsletter Editor, I hope that I can keep up to the standards
that Angela kept over the last couple of years.
First thing I would like to welcome everyone back to the courts, especially some of our returning
players that have had time off for one reason or another.
I hope that everyone is ready for a big Netball and Football season.
The Netball committee have been working hard over the past couple months to make sure that the
season runs smoothly so Well Done to all of them.
Welcome also should be made to our coaches for the year and Congratulations on your
appointments.
So, although the clouds were threatening, the rain did hold off and when the sun came out it was
quite hot.
For the first games of the season we were 3 wins, 1 draw and 6 losses. A lot of players playing as a
playing group for the first time, so the results were good for that. It is a long season so let’s see what
the results are at home next week.
A Grade BMW 51 def CB 36
Best: Ella Peacock, Helane Blieschke
Coach’s Report: Ange and Chloe
A grade team started the game with enthusiasm and effort and took a 6 goal lead into the first
quarter. A team effort was rewarded with a 15 goal win giving the A grade its first win against
Crystal Brook in too many years to remember. We welcome Brydie Sims our team and club, thank
you Jake Keller. Chloe and Brydie combine well to put Crystal brook goalies under pressure and
made the most of every rebound opportunity. Some fluent passages of play throughout the game
showed what we can achieve when the team gets used to playing with each other and our fitness
base improves. (I think the A & D scored the hottest part of the day) Helane created opportunities
and shot well in her first A Grade game. Well done girls an awesome way to start the season turning
the result around from last year’s prelim finals.
B Grade BMW 46 def CB 32
Best: Tess McCallum, Lily Durford
Coach’s Report: Katelan Spaeth & Emma Sparth (Nil Report)
C Grade BMW 50 def CB 29
Coach’s Report: By guest mentor, Jude Greenwood!
With a new look team following promotions and retirements the 'c' grade attacked the first quarter with
determination, restricting CB to just 3 goals and scoring easily themselves. All players contributed both
defensively and offensively. Monique had a huge impact in WD greatly interrupting CB drive to the ring,
turning over ball and creating a strong link through midcourt. This start was the real difference at the end
of the game. CB regrouped for the remainder of the game and BMW were made to earn the small
advantage in every quarter. A special mention to Kate who has come from g last year and showed such
poise for her first senior game.
D Grade BMW 38 drew CB 38
Coach’s Report: Nic
The D Grade started with all guns blazing overcoming nerves in the first quarter of the game. With a
few team members out this week, and many of last year’s D graders taking to the court, we
welcomed our newest player Tamara Schmidt. In what was the hottest part of the day, our goalies
combined well, our mid court with strong, and although a little on the shorter side, our defence
made a supremely gallant effort, and were successful in many turnovers. The D Grade went into may
quarter time breaks in the lead and ending the game in a draw 38 all. (Perhaps a few puffed legs due
to the heat) There are many things that we can take from that game, ready for the next time we line
up against the Brook. We would like to thank Tara Kumnick (who took to the court and played an
exceptional half) and Minnesota Cheriton for sitting on our bench. Thanks to Brookie for being on
our bench and for being Primary Carer. Thanks also to Toni McCallum for being my mentor this
season.
E grade BMW 40 lost CB 42
Best: Tara Kumnick, Kate Taylor
Coach’s Report: By Katrina for Meridee
After a start that was not ideal, and being down by 12 goals at half time the new BMW e grade started to
gel. Unfortunately, an 8 goal turn around in the 3rd quarter and a pretty good last quarter weren't quite
enough to get the BMW girls over the line. A great effort against last year’s premiers, and there a plenty
of positives coming up for this team.
F Grade BMW 20 lost CB 37
Coach’s Report: Katrina
With only two players from last season’s F grade, and a few girls coming back to netball after a few years
out of the game. The F graders did a great job on Saturday. We had some excellent passages of play and
are looking forward to getting used to new combinations and putting it all together to play to our full
potential. Fabulous to see Margo Sismey, Christy Hanisch, and Carissa Keller on the court for BMW again.
And we welcome to Samara Gosling and Louise Kohler to the club. A big Thank you to Bernadette
Cheriton for being primary carer for both the E and F grades after doing football training all morning.
G Grade BMW 10 lost CB 29
Best: Isabelle Arthur, Amy Woolford
Coach’s Report: Heather Durnford (Nil Report)
H Grade BMW 9 lost CB 9
Best: Taylah Searle, Mia Arthur
Coach’s Report: Tamara
A whole new H grade team lined up to take on the Brookies. What our H grade girls may have lacked in
height they sure made up for in determination. All players contributed down the court and gave it their
all. We went into the second quarter down by one and worked hard to keep Crystal Brook from scoring
for the rest of the game, going down 23 – 9. Special thanks to Liz Prosser for being our primary carer.
I Grade BMW 1 lost CB 15
Best: Sophie Orrock, Livinia Lines
Coach’s Report: Grace
The I Grade showed real promise in their first game for the 2017 season. We were really strong in
defence all the way down the court with Imogen getting lots of turnovers and taps for us in GK. Due to
the height of the crystal brook girls we had difficulty getting the ball into our attacking goal circle, making
our first goal in the 3rd quarter very exciting! The girls showed great sportsmanship and ran out the game
well, despite the heat and score. We went down 15 - 1 in the end. Special thanks to Pip Roberts for sitting
on our bench.
J Grade BMW 3 lost CB 19
Coach’s Report: Brooke for Donna
While coach Donna is away on holidays, I had the lovely pleasure of coaching the J grade girls. It was a
whole different ball game for these young girls coming up from Minis. They were up against Crystal
Brook’s same j grade team as last year. The girls had a rocky start to the game but by the second quarter
they had found their feet and even managed to pull off some great little plays down the court. Poor Eliza
Polden got a fast ball to the face, with encouragement from her team, a wipe of the tears and two
thumbs up, she was back into. We made have only scored 3 goals but the girls & parents on the sideline
were excited each time. Thanks to Nic for being primary carer. Looking forward to seeing their
improvement through the season. Cheers
Minis
Coach’s Report: Nikki
GS - Kiera Mount, GA - Jasmine Foulis, WA - Mikayla Garrard, C - Sienna Lines , WD - Lacey Cains,
GD - Bailey Dodman, GK - Dana Banes Res- Carly Prosser & Isobel Dawson
Start of the session for the minis was challenging but a great game, we were fortunate to have 4 -J
graders & 1 Sub Mini fill in so we could play a game. What a game it was. Special mention to our new
Minis player Kiera Mount. Her first game & she played GS & she played really well. She listened &
followed instructions & by the end of the game you would not have known it was her first game.
Bailey Dodman was a standout at GD then GK she kept the competition at bay. Well done team & I
look forward to a fun season ahead.
Sub Minis
Coach’s Report: Toni For Meridee.
Well done to all subminis this week! Coach Meridee was working this week so Toni Mc was lucky enough
to coach this awesome bunch of kids. CB were a very slick outfit, however we managed to score 2 goals
which were shot by the hands of Olivia! Well done to all players and special welcome to first year players
Ava, Mia, Olivia and Tahli.
Big thanks to Sienna and Bailey (and their parents who got them there earlier) for filling in.
