1.0 Introduction
1.1 Aim and Purpose
This report has been compiled in response to feedback from the WMP evaluation questionnaires which were
distributed to delegates of the production of ‘Mum can you lend me £20’ by DrugFAM and commissioned by
Inspector 2626 Deborah Walker of West Midlands Police Drug Interventions Programme.
The production was attended by a mixed audience including Custody Staff, Police Officers, PCSO’s, Treatment
Workers, DIP staff, Arrest Referral Workers, Probation and Prison Workers.
1.2 Methodology
The results are compiled based on 134 responses to the questionnaires. This is not the true number of people
who actually attended. Of the 170 who were invited, it is estimated (some did not sign the signing in register
when they entered the building) 150 turned up for the two shows that were held on the 8th April.
The evaluation survey was designed to get the immediate response from the delegates after the play had ended
and consisted of 11 Questions asking for their immediate views and attitudes once the play had ended. The
benefit of this type of questioning is that it will reduce contamination of data allowing an accurate reflection of
their thoughts.
The downside to this is that there is no way of analysing their long term views so establishing behaviour change
would require further research at a later date. Also, there is the possibility that data will not be completed on the
questionnaire so it will not give true picture of everyone’s thought but rather an overall opinion from those who
took the time to complete the questionnaire. To this end, 48 people who attended and completed the
questionnaire did not complete the rear of the form.
The results were compiled from a feedback form using a various methods including Likert scale, Yes / No
answers and free text fields delegates to write in their preferred comments. This allowed for both open and
closed questioning.
The findings are summative rather than formative as the show is produced elsewhere so WMP would not be
able to change it for the future. The results are presented in this report using scales that have been compiled
using an Excel spreadsheet and the free text comments were added to Microsoft Word. Due to the number of
responses, results were analysed in batches then merged together to form one result.
The Questionnaire is attached as Appendix 1

2.7 Question 7 : Do you feel that this is a more impactive way of learning as opposed to
a classroom input?
This question was designed to establish if watching a production is an effective way of learning. Responders
were invited to write in their thoughts in the free text area. Not all responders completed this question. As with
the other questions, the full list of answers can be found in Appendix 2.

rehab units across the country that are paid for by local authorities and are equal, if not better’ (although
at the time it was happening, such services were not widely available)

3.0 Conclusion
The first conclusion that can be drawn from this was that both the production and the stalls that were put up on
the day were a success. The Cast, Stall Holders, DIP staff, especially Elizabeth Burton-Phillips and Inspector
Walker can all take credit for making the day a success.
Initially, 170 people were listed to attend from a potential 200. The seating at Tally Ho was increased at the last
minute in case there were any late attendees. From the 170, some didn’t turn up and this was reflected by some
empty seats in the later part of the afternoon. It was disappointing that the turnout from WMP was quite low,
even though it was advertised out a few months prior to the event taking place.
The vast majority of responders clearly stated that the production was excellent, as was the cast and the
relevance to their roles. There was a mixed reaction to whether it increased awareness and understanding and
this can be drawn from the nature of the audience. It was mainly made up of professionals from partner
agencies who are already experienced in the fields of drug misuse and treatment, With that said, it served as a
timely reminder that families are often the victims of drug misuse as well as the addict.
Many of the comments made about what was the most enjoyable included that it was an impactive, hard hitting
and moving story, later feedback suggests that this could never be created in a classroom or web based training
course. A number of responders commented on certain cast members stating that they were realistic and true to
life. One of the aims of bringing this production to West Midlands Police was to show that drugs can affect
families and parents, the show certainly achieved that aim and this too was commented by a number of
responders.
There were a few developmental points about the show which the producers could consider, perhaps one or two
inconsistencies that were overlooked but on the whole, the feedback was that it was in fact a superb production.
When it could be considered to be run on a smaller budget, it achieved its objectives in a powerful and
constructive way. Many people commented on it being emotional and having to fight back tears further
illustrates this point.
There was mixed reactions to whether it will make a difference. Some agencies commented that they already do
family support workshops but some did also comment that this production offered a timely reminder of the
importance to support families. Again, this is down to the work that the agencies do rather than the production
itself. Drug Treatment has evolved a great deal since the time that this actually happened.
Overall the production was rated as excellent and all but 1 person who responded (to the rear of the
Questionnaire) stated that they would in fact recommend it to their colleagues. It would certainly be valuable to
Custody Staff and Police Officers who deal with drug misusers on a day to day basis.
It is recommended that if funding was available to do so, WMP commission this play again and target it to a
much wider audience, perhaps running it over a number of shows to maximise the numbers who can attend. It
would certainly challenge perception of drug misuse.
Perhaps the comments emailed to me at a later date made by a Custody Sgt from West Midlands Police sums
up the conclusion :
Restricted

13
Keith,
I don't know who organised this event but I just wanted to say that it was the most powerful, effective and
relevant training event I have ever attended.
I decided to attend the event on my rest day and I have to admit that whilst I was en-route I was wondering why
I was bothering and thinking of 101 other things I could be doing!!!!
However the play was excellent and has both challenged my pre-conceptions surrounding drug users and also
the impact it has on their wider family as a whole. I’m not one that usually gets emotional but I like many others
in the audience found the story to be incredibly emotive and moving and brought home the fact that drugs
effects more than just the user.
There was a lot of I have taken from this that I can use in my day to day work as a custody sergeant and I only
wish there had been more custody staff there as I feel it would have really benefited everybody. I believe
sometimes as a police service we need to look beyond the drug user and realise that not only are they victims of
their own circumstances and addiction but that there is a mother such as Elizabeth and the wider family who
become entangled and trapped by the circumstances and criminality.
Can you please forward this to whoever organised the day and express my thanks for giving me a broader
perspective.

Question 6
Different role of key worker and probation, depicted as same when they are different. Some of the acting. The
ending was a little drawn out, not sure about the key working hugging the client.
Brought back terrible memories. Lady heroin - she was too distracting, she should have been faceless, silent
and still. Some overacting in places. Nothing, it was all fabulous
Didn’t like the character coming off drugs and what they go through (harrowing rather than poor acting). The
message that cigarettes and cannabis can lead to heroin made me feel uncomfortable as it can give the
impression all softer drugs lead to harder use. Basic drug awareness could complement this very well.
Would like to have seen more about the psychological impact and chaotic lifestyle. A little long. The music /

play which was extremely saddening to watch. Very good presentation. Very good cast - thanks. Brilliant
overall. Very well performed. Simply fantastic. Fantastic, really enjoyed it. Schools would benefit from this
production as the interventions (18yrs old) are possibly too old. Would like to see this going into schools.
Excellent, impactive performance. Excellent morning. Amazing! Thank you. Would like to have seen the
perspective from the sister’s point of view. Excellent and powerful production x 2. Excellent. Overall it was
excellent throughout. Thank you to Elizabeth and her family for sharing her story for the good of others. Superb
performance. Could benefit from covering local services on offer at the end as well as drug fam. Appears to be
vague from speaking to visitors to the stall and the prejudice some drug users experience could be reduced by
professionals watching this play. Would liked a question and answer session at the end. Excellent production.
Fantastic play that really brings home the effects of drugs on families. Really enjoyed it, had to fight off tears in
the end. Superb! Excellent script, great delivery. Thank you to Elizabeth - a very brave lady. Very powerful and
moving x 2. It made me shiver many times and moved me to tears. Thank you to the two ladies for sharing their
story
Overall, the play was emotional whilst giving an excellent insight into how it affects families. Would be good to
see this on TV or at the Belgrade. Also in schools perhaps supported by partnership agencies in the local
communities. Wider circulation to inform families of support given. Focus seems to be more driven on the user,
brilliant. Very moving, I did not realise it was a true story. Wonderful moving production, very positive and
impactive, would have been useful to add some ideas about how to apply things in practice. Made me think,
where was the support for the family? Excellent play that has made me question my own attitude and made me
think about how my work makes a difference
Thanks to WMP for arranging it so well (Merseyside Police)
