The production was attended by a mixed audience including Custody Staff, Police Officers, PCSO’s, Treatment Workers, DIP staff, Arrest Referral Workers, Probation and Prison Workers. 1.2 Methodology The results are compiled based on 134 responses to the questionnaires. This is not the true number of people who actually attended. Of the 170 who were invited, it is estimated (some did not sign the signing in register when they entered the building) 150 turned up for the two shows that were held on the 8th April. The evaluation survey was designed to get the immediate response from the delegates after the play had ended and consisted of 11 Questions asking for their immediate views and attitudes once the play had ended. The benefit of this type of questioning is that it will reduce contamination of data allowing an accurate reflection of their thoughts. The downside to this is that there is no way of analysing their long term views so establishing behaviour change would require further research at a later date. Also, there is the possibility that data will not be completed on the questionnaire so it will not give true picture of everyone’s thought but rather an overall opinion from those who took the time to complete the questionnaire. To this end, 48 people who attended and completed the questionnaire did not complete the rear of the form. The results were compiled from a feedback form using a various methods including Likert scale, Yes / No answers and free text fields delegates to write in their preferred comments. This allowed for both open and closed questioning. The findings are summative rather than formative as the show is produced elsewhere so WMP would not be able to change it for the future. The results are presented in this report using scales that have been compiled using an Excel spreadsheet and the free text comments were added to Microsoft Word. Due to the number of responses, results were analysed in batches then merged together to form one result. The Questionnaire is attached as Appendix 1 2.0 Findings 2.1 Question 1 : How would you rate the production overall? Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 4 This question was designed to ask for the overall opinion of the show and uses a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being Very Poor and 5 being Very Good. Question 1 : How would you rate the production overall? 114 120 Number 100 80 60 40 18 20 2 0 Very Poor Poor Average Good Very Good Rating Of the 134 who responded, the vast majority (114) stated that the overall performance was Very Good. 18 said it was good and 2 said it was average. 2.2 Question 2 : How would you rate the following? This question again uses a scale and splits the response to Question 1 into three areas to evaluate the opinions of the Cast, Content and the Relevance of the performance to their working role. All 134 people who completed the questionnaire responded to this question. Question 2 : How do you rate the Cast? 120 113 Value 100 80 60 40 19 20 2 0 0 Average Poor Very poor 0 Excellent Good Rating The results to this part of the question are similar to the overall opinion with the majority (113) stating they were excellent. 19 said they were good and just 2 responders said the cast was average. Only 1 person said it was average. Value Question 2 : How do you rate the relevance to your role? 140 120 100 80 60 40 20 0 116 17 Excellent Good 1 0 0 Average Poor Very poor Rating Being consistent to the other questions, the responder’s answers were similar to their opinion of it being relevant to their role at work with 116 saying in terms of relevance it was excellent followed by 17 stating the relevance was good with only 1 scoring it of average relevance. 2.3 Question 3 : How would you rate your knowledge of issues around drug misuse since attending this production ? This question was designed to test whether knowledge had improved and used a simple scale : Better No Change Worse Responders were asked to highlight which applies to them. Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 6 Again, all 134 responders answered this question. Question 3 : Since the show, how would you rate your knowledge? Better No change 57 Worse 77 The opinion to this was mixed with 77 feeling their awareness is better. However 57 felt there was no change in their knowledge. 2.4 Question 4 : As a result of the production, do you feel your understanding and confidence has improved around drug misuse? This question was designed to test whether confidence and understanding had improved and like question 3, used a simple scale : Better No Change Worse Responders were again asked to highlight which applies to them. Again, all 134 responders answered this question. Question 4 : Since the show do you feel your confidence and understanding has improved Improved 49 No Change Worse 85 Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 7 Opinion was mixed with regards to this question although a higher number (85) felt that there has been an improvement in their awareness and confidence in the field of drug misuse. Roughly one third (49) felt there was no change. 2.5 Question 5 : What did you like the most about this production? This question invited responders to write in the free text field what they enjoyed the most about this production. Due to the large number of responses, the results were compiled in batches so some comments may be duplicated in the findings, the entire list of responses can be found in Appendix 2. The vast majority completed this and the key comments made are highlighted below : It was a story of hope It was very powerful It was very impactive It was very emotional Seeing it from the Mothers perspective The constant love of the mother Seeing how drugs can destroy a family It’s a reminder that families are often ignored The cast were superb It was very realistic Lady Heroin was amazing The drug dealer was realistic and superb Nick / Simon was fantastic The grittiness of the characters and it being a true story Seeing the drug withdrawal was harrowing The ending was very poignant I felt it showed how heroin has a hold of people Shows how recovery takes time The journey Nick went through to hit rock bottom and realise the realness of his actions The effect on the family over a number of years - we only see shorter term impact The whole thing was intense Use of music and drama Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 8 Powerfully performed It was graphic and showed true addiction 2.6 Question 6 : What did you like the least about this production? Following on from Question 4, this question invited responders to write in the free text field what they least enjoyed the most about this production. A large number simply entered ’nothing’ suggesting they did not find anything they didn’t like, others left it blank. The full list can be found in Appendix 2. The key comments made are highlighted below : Different role of key worker and probation, depicted as same when they are different Not sure about the key worker hugging the client Didn’t like the character coming off drugs and what they go through (harrowing rather than poor acting) The message that cigarettes and cannabis can lead to heroin made me feel uncomfortable as it can give the impression all softer drugs lead to harder use It was upsetting Could cause guilt for recovering addicts Some of the acting Basic drug awareness could complement this very well The ending was a little drawn out Would like to have seen more about the psychological impact and chaotic lifestyle A little long The music / media could have been slicker Not sure if this is so relevant these days due to the changing drug markets on the streets 2.7 Question 7 : Do you feel that this is a more impactive way of learning as opposed to a classroom input? This question was designed to establish if watching a production is an effective way of learning. Responders were invited to write in their thoughts in the free text area. Not all responders completed this question. As with the other questions, the full list of answers can be found in Appendix 2. 39 responders simply put ‘yes’ they would prefer to learn in this way but others elaborated on their answers and the key answers are presented below : Visual learning was very impactive and lifelike A classroom could not have as much power as this performance Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 9 It is more lifelike / realistic / emotional I felt all the emotions with the characters and it was compelling all the way through Use of drama was perfect Yes but it could benefit from other services so audience can hear what options are available locally Yes it touches everyone Yes, feel strongly that this should go to secondary schools and youth groups Yes, it was more hard hitting Powerful to see how it affected the family Three responders did not feel that this was an effective way of learning and explained their reasoning : No, early intervention is important. It was useful but don’t feel it is relevant to those with no involvement in heroin / crack use given the extreme nature of these addictions I deliver classroom inputs so no, but I can see a place for it 2.8 Question 8 : As a result of seeing this play, do you feel it has had an impact on how you see the effects of drugs on family / community life? This question was used to invite responders to think about the immediate impact of the show and ask if it has readjusted their current thinking. Not everyone completed this question, some simply put ‘Yes’ (31) or ‘No’ (9) whilst others elaborated. The full list of Answers can be found in Appendix 2 and the key findings are listed below : Certainly made me realise impact on families which is not so important in my current role (5 people) Shows how it affects everyone Very hard hitting More services are needed to support families (4 people) Yes, it wants me to help the families of addicts more Yes, it hits home the damage caused Seeing how the amount of drugs used affects everyone, not just the user Meeting the people involved (Elizabeth) Yes, it has given a positive message 2.9 Question 9 : Would you recommend this production to your colleagues? Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 10 This question consisted of a simple ‘Yes / No’ answers and invited responders to state whether they would recommend this production to their colleagues. 88 people responded to this question. Question 9 : Would you recommend this production to your colleagues 100 87 Value 80 60 40 20 1 0 Yes No Answer Everyone bar 1 responder said yes they would recommend this show to their colleagues. 2.10 Question 10 : Do you feel that there is anything you can do to improve the service you offer as a result of seeing this play? This question again was designed to test attitudes and behaviour as a result of seeing the play, long term evaluation would have to be carried out to see if there would be any change. Due not everyone completing the rear of the form, not everyone answered this question. The key responses are listed below and the entire list can be found in Appendix 2 : Could be useful to offer service from probation to offer further support to families of drug users Bringing production to our prison / service Will attempt to offer a more interactive service for family of affected users 6 people Promote DrugFAM as a service provider Believe the people I work with Remind family they can get rehab for free We already do this but need to advertise it more Would be great for police led princes trust teams to attend Some said it would not change things but their reasoning was also explained : We do family support in Coventry No we are already aware but more needs to be done to support families and siblings (3 responders from same service) Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 11 2.11 Question 11 : Do you have any other comments or feedback you would like to add? This question simply asks if there was anything else that responders would like to comment on that was not covered elsewhere on the evaluation. It was a free text field and was not completed by every responder. As with the other questions, the entire list can be found in Appendix 2 but the key responses are listed below : It was fantastic Superb! More police officers should have attended Thank you to Elizabeth - a very brave lady It made me shiver many times and moved me to tears Thank you to the two ladies for sharing their experiences Brilliant, impactive play which was extremely saddening to watch Really enjoyed it, had to fight off tears in the end Excellent cast / script / delivery Excellent morning The production was very professional and dragged you in I did not realise it was a true story Excellent play that has made me question my own attitude and made me think about how my work makes a difference Made me think, where was the support for the family? Thanks to WMP for arranging it so well (Merseyside Police Officer) There was however a comment made ‘I think it would be worth pointing out that although this family paid for rehab, there are a plethora of rehab units across the country that are paid for by local authorities and are equal, if not better’ (although at the time it was happening, such services were not widely available) Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 12 3.0 Conclusion The first conclusion that can be drawn from this was that both the production and the stalls that were put up on the day were a success. The Cast, Stall Holders, DIP staff, especially Elizabeth Burton-Phillips and Inspector Walker can all take credit for making the day a success. Initially, 170 people were listed to attend from a potential 200. The seating at Tally Ho was increased at the last minute in case there were any late attendees. From the 170, some didn’t turn up and this was reflected by some empty seats in the later part of the afternoon. It was disappointing that the turnout from WMP was quite low, even though it was advertised out a few months prior to the event taking place. The vast majority of responders clearly stated that the production was excellent, as was the cast and the relevance to their roles. There was a mixed reaction to whether it increased awareness and understanding and this can be drawn from the nature of the audience. It was mainly made up of professionals from partner agencies who are already experienced in the fields of drug misuse and treatment, With that said, it served as a timely reminder that families are often the victims of drug misuse as well as the addict. Many of the comments made about what was the most enjoyable included that it was an impactive, hard hitting and moving story, later feedback suggests that this could never be created in a classroom or web based training course. A number of responders commented on certain cast members stating that they were realistic and true to life. One of the aims of bringing this production to West Midlands Police was to show that drugs can affect families and parents, the show certainly achieved that aim and this too was commented by a number of responders. There were a few developmental points about the show which the producers could consider, perhaps one or two inconsistencies that were overlooked but on the whole, the feedback was that it was in fact a superb production. When it could be considered to be run on a smaller budget, it achieved its objectives in a powerful and constructive way. Many people commented on it being emotional and having to fight back tears further illustrates this point. There was mixed reactions to whether it will make a difference. Some agencies commented that they already do family support workshops but some did also comment that this production offered a timely reminder of the importance to support families. Again, this is down to the work that the agencies do rather than the production itself. Drug Treatment has evolved a great deal since the time that this actually happened. Overall the production was rated as excellent and all but 1 person who responded (to the rear of the Questionnaire) stated that they would in fact recommend it to their colleagues. It would certainly be valuable to Custody Staff and Police Officers who deal with drug misusers on a day to day basis. It is recommended that if funding was available to do so, WMP commission this play again and target it to a much wider audience, perhaps running it over a number of shows to maximise the numbers who can attend. It would certainly challenge perception of drug misuse. Perhaps the comments emailed to me at a later date made by a Custody Sgt from West Midlands Police sums up the conclusion : Restricted Serving our communities, protecting them from harm 13 Keith, I don't know who organised this event but I just wanted to say that it was the most powerful, effective and relevant training event I have ever attended. I decided to attend the event on my rest day and I have to admit that whilst I was en-route I was wondering why I was bothering and thinking of 101 other things I could be doing!!!! However the play was excellent and has both challenged my pre-conceptions surrounding drug users and also the impact it has on their wider family as a whole. I’m not one that usually gets emotional but I like many others in the audience found the story to be incredibly emotive and moving and brought home the fact that drugs effects more than just the user. There was a lot of I have taken from this that I can use in my day to day work as a custody sergeant and I only wish there had been more custody staff there as I feel it would have really benefited everybody. I believe sometimes as a police service we need to look beyond the drug user and realise that not only are they victims of their own circumstances and addiction but that there is a mother such as Elizabeth and the wider family who become entangled and trapped by the circumstances and criminality. Can you please forward this to whoever organised the day and express my thanks for giving me a broader perspective. Nick PS 3607 Nick HILL A Team, Birmingham North, Central Justice Services. Lady heroin - she was too distracting, she should have been faceless, silent and still. Some overacting in places. Nothing, it was all fabulous Didn’t like the character coming off drugs and what they go through (harrowing rather than poor acting). The message that cigarettes and cannabis can lead to heroin made me feel uncomfortable as it can give the impression all softer drugs lead to harder use. Overall it was excellent throughout. Thank you to Elizabeth and her family for sharing her story for the good of others. Superb performance. Could benefit from covering local services on offer at the end as well as drug fam. Appears to be vague from speaking to visitors to the stall and the prejudice some drug users experience could be reduced by professionals watching this play. Would liked a question and answer session at the end. Excellent production. Fantastic play that really brings home the effects of drugs on families. Really enjoyed it, had to fight off tears in the end. Superb! Excellent script, great delivery. Thank you to Elizabeth - a very brave lady. Very powerful and moving x 2.
