2017 Market Auction Participant To Do List
January/February /March
o Consider what animal(s) you will be entering in the market auction.
o Read the Market Auction Rules.
o Start on your project record (if you don’t yet have your animal, you can identify your project
goals to get started).
o Get a head start on contacting potential buyers (especially if you think you will be entering a
steer).
o You must participate in a Leaders’ Association Fundraiser. Participation in the Candy Bar
Sale (Oct.-Dec.), Skratchers (available anytime) or Plant Sale (April) fulfills this requirement.
April 1 – Letter of Intent Due
o Identify the species and number of animals per species that you plan to enter in the market
auction.
June 1 – Draft Project Records and participant biography form due (except chickens)
o Please fill out as much information as possible on your project record and then submit a
copy with your fair entry. Your record does NOT need to be fully completed until after fair.
June 1 – Fair Entries Due (except chickens)
o Use the Orleans County 4-H Fair Advance Entry Form.
o Make sure to enter your market animal in the market auction class for each species.
July 1 – Draft Project Records and participant biography form due (chickens only)
o Please fill out as much information as possible on your project record and then submit a
copy with your fair entry. Your record does NOT need to be fully completed until after fair.
July 1 – Fair Entries Due (chickens only)

April 1 – July 16 - Contact buyers, distribute bidder packets and fill out Bidder Tracking Sheet.
July 19 – Market Animal Auction Bidder Tracking Sheet Due
July 19 – Workbee at Fairgrounds (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.)
o Assist with preparing the fairgrounds for fair. Participating in Workbee will help you finalize
your plans for the housing and care of your market animal(s).
July 19 (or before) - Create “Thank You” Sign (at least 11 by 17 inches) for those who purchased
your animal(s) last year.
July 19 (or before) - Complete “Animal in Market Auction” Sign for your exhibit.

Fair Week To-Do List
Monday - Weigh-in your animals at 10:00 a.m. at the Swine Pavilion (4-Her must be present).
o Display “Animal in Market Auction” Sign for your animal. (Your sign will be checked Tuesday
morning.)
o Display “Thank You” Sign. (Your sign will be checked on Tuesday.)
Work with your animal(s) in the show ring.
Care for your animal(s) - water, feed, clean, bedding.
Show your animal(s) in the Market Auction Class(es) for their specific species.
Participate in the Market Auction on Saturday at 7:00pm.
Day of Market Auction To-Do List
Help set-up chairs and the auction area the morning of the auction. Ask Skip Lear for specific
times.
Move animals to the auction area one hour prior to auction preview. (Each species will have
different requirements. Speak to your animal superintendent for specific details.)
If possible, move and display your Thank You Sign in the auction area.
Make sure that your animal has been identified as Market Auction (number on animal) prior to
the auction.
Review the Market Auction Program to determine when your animal is to be sold and make sure
you are ready at that time.
After your animal has been sold, make sure that your buyer has received his/her thank-you gift.
Have you and your animal’s picture taken with the buyer.
Help in distribution of clipboards for signatures and thank-you gifts.
Help to move animals to appropriate location after the auction.
Help clean-up the market auction area when completed.
Thank auctioneers and volunteers for their time and help.
Post Fair To-Do List
Write thank you note(s) to buyers and send or deliver them to the 4-H office to meet the buyer
thank you requirement.
o Checks will not be released until thank you notes are written.
o If a thank you note does not have a stamp, the 4-H office will provide one.
o Please make sure to write legibly and spell correctly.
Mid to Early August - Turn in completed project record(s).
Tell your friends about 4-H and the Market Auction.

2017 MARKET AUCTION RULES
Rules for Orleans County 4-H Meat Animal Auction
1.
Species allowed in the meat auction are market lambs, market hogs, beef steers, meat goats, meat rabbits
(roasters), and poultry (chickens, turkeys, and ducks).
2.
Beef animals must be steers. All other species (except beef) can be male or female. Sheep and meat goats must
be either castrated male kids or female kids (with NO adult teeth). Goats and sheep must be born after October
1 of the previous year.
3.
Weight suggested minimum and maximum guidelines are as follows (in pounds):








Lambs: 60-150 pounds.
Pigs: 190-279 pounds.
Beef Steers: 1,100-2,000 pounds.
Meat Goats: 45-110 pounds.
Roaster meat rabbits must be no more than 7 months old and weigh more than 5 lbs
pounds.
For rabbit meat pens all three animals have maximum 5 lbs each and be the same breed.
Maximum 10 weeks of age for meat pen.
Chickens: a minimum of 4 pounds.
Turkey and other poultry: contact the 4-H office.
Note: Weights will be evaluated by the Market Auction Committee after weights have been recorded. The
animal should exhibit a healthy weight with adequate muscle tone. Animals in a skeletal and/or unhealthy
condition (e.g., bones protruding with a rough coat) will be disqualified.

Each 4-H member may enter no more than three animals of any species and no more than four total.
5.
4-H members wishing to participate in the market auction must indicate their intent to participate to the
4-H Office in writing by April 1 (postmark date).
6.
Exhibitors must participate in at least one county fundraiser in the 4-H year (October 1 to September 30) in
which the fair is held.
7.
Project records are required. An “in progress” copy of the project record must be submitted to the 4-H
Office with the Advance Entry Form (due June 1 - all species except chickens/due July 1 - chickens only).
A completed copy of the project record must also be submitted after fair with a Thank You letter for
each buyer prior to receiving payment for the entry.
8.
Exhibitors must complete an Orleans County Bidder Tracking Sheet and submit the form to the 4-H office by
July 19. Both the 4-Her and the 4-Her’s parent/guardian must sign the form.
9.
Weigh-ins will be done by the species superintendent and Market Auction Committee members, and overseen
by the Fair Committee chairperson or 4-H Office.
10. Weigh-ins will be done at fair. Each 4-Her is responsible for checking the weigh-in schedule for the exact time.
11. 4-H exhibitors must be present for weigh-ins with their animals.

12. All male animals must be castrated, with no signs of testicles allowed, and animal must be completely healed at
time of weigh-in. (With the exception of rabbits and poultry.)
13. Each 4-Her is responsible for securing buyers for each of their animals in the auction. If a 4-Her is having
trouble locating a buyer, contact the superintendent of that area for guidance and assistance.
14. Never will the animal be donated back to the previous owner.
15. If a family member purchases an animal at the auction, it cannot compete at any other shows or fairs. If it does
compete in another show or fair by said member, this will make all family members ineligible to participate in
another future meat animal project in Orleans County.
16. Minimum bid will be at the market price of the day.
17. Each animal species sold will start with the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion.
18. All auction animals must be removed by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, at the end of the fair.
19. 4-H exhibitors will be responsible for the watering, feeding, and the care of their auction animals until they are
removed from the fairgrounds.
20. 4-H exhibitors will be responsible for displaying a sign or poster (at least 11 x 17 inches) that thanks/recognizes
the buyers of their previous year’s auction animals.
21. All buyers must pay for the animals they have purchased by the end of the auction.
22. All animals will be sold by the pound, live weight with the exception of rabbits and poultry. Rabbits will be
sold as price per animal. Poultry will be sold by the price per turkey or price per pen of chicken or duck.
23. All drug withdrawal time periods will be followed.
24. Auction animals will have a sign displayed by their pen or stall, stating that this animal will be auctioned in the
sale. The sign will be provided by 4-H Office.
25. Exhibitors must be well dressed and act in an appropriate manner prior, during, and after the auction, to
promote a positive image of the 4-H program to the public.
26. Exhibitors must enter and show their market auction project animals in the appropriate breed classes at the fair.
27. No white ribbon animals will be allowed in the auction.
28. 4-Hers MUST provide a personally written thank you note to the buyer(s) of their project animal(s) to the
4-H office to receive payment for their market auction project animal(s).

All 4-H members engaged in meat animal production activities are expected to review and do the best job that they
can do to understand and adhere to the following practices.
As a 4-H member,














I am learning the best ways to house, feed, manage, and care for animals.
I am also learning about vaccination practices and health care procedures I can follow to protect
my animals from becoming sick or injured.
I will inspect facilities for things like cleanliness, animal comfort, and safe methods of animal
handling and restraint, and make the appropriate changes to improve the animals comfort and
safety.
I will work with my veterinarian and follow my veterinarian’s advice and recommendations.
I agree that I will strictly adhere to label directions when using any over the counter medications
I understand that many medications and treatments have withdrawal times. Common
medications or treatments include de-worming medicines, vaccinations or shots given to
prevent diseases, and antibiotics used to treat diseases.
I will choose grooming products that I know are safe for humans and animals.
I will read product labels and avoid products that may be harmful to my animal or me, such as
methylene chloride and toluene. (Examples of products to avoid are leather polishes, nail
polishes, aerosol paints, water based cleaners, and water based adhesives.)
I will learn about and follow state and federal animal identification regulations.
I will learn how to prepare livestock for market by calculating proper withdrawal times for legal
medications and treatments.
I will be honest in reporting my knowledge about treatments before my animals are prepared
for shows, sales, market, or slaughter.
I will do my part to ensure a safe food supply by sending animals that are clean, dry, disease
free, and medication free to market.
I will be kind and considerate in my relationships and will strive to do others no harm.
I am aware that my actions and decisions affect others.
If I do not follow these practices,
