Conservation Board Game Due May 2nd Extra Credit Dear Fourth Grade Guardian, In a couple of months, we will attend a Conservation Round Up put on by our local Conservation District. As you may have guessed, its purpose is to teach kids about the importance of conserving Kansas’ natural resources. This is a perfect way to end the year because conserving natural resources has been an ongoing theme in class. We have learned about recycling, renewable forms of energy, and the destruction that occurs when we don’t conserve our soil. But, there are other very important topics related to conservation that we never got to, such as protecting endangered species and the pollution in our oceans. This quarter, the students will have the opportunity to create a Conservation Board Game. Due to the unpredictable and “frequentlycancelled” nature of fourth quarter, I am not going to require students to finish this assignment at home. However, if enough students choose to do it, we will celebrate by playing one another’s games in class. To those of you who have given me 100% all year, please consider doing one last amazing project! After all, doesn’t this look like fun? First, Choose a Topic: The purpose of the game is to teach its players about conservation. Your players will learn a lot more if the information is focused. For that reason, please choose just one topic and stick to it. Then, learn all that you can about it – so you have a lot of good facts to teach about in the game. Here are some topics you can choose from. (There are plenty of others, if you have something else in mind!) Soil Conservation Kansas Wildlife Preservation Endangered Species (You can do something on a bunch of them, or just focus on one.) Destruction of the Rainforests Polluted Oceans Renewable Forms of Energy (Wind, Solar, Etc.) Recycling Conservation Board Game Due May 2nd Preserving our Aquifer The Watershed National Parks Extra Credit Next, Choose a Game Design: Remember that the purpose of the game is to teach its players about conservation. You can do this with trivia questions (such as: “get this question correct to move on or earn points”). You might also consider a game where players use up a natural resource carefully, or strategize to protect a habitat. You can also make this game mirror other classic board games. Or, you can create something totally original. Here are some ideas that might help you get started: Sorry Chutes and Ladders Monopoly Jeopardy Trivial Pursuit Bingo Matching Activities Go Fish Life Then, Create it! It’s finally time to start! Give it your all! Assume that other members of the class will play this game. Go that extra mile to make it look colorful and inviting! Remember to include things like game pieces and score sheets if you need them. Last, Explain it! Please include the directions for this game. You may wish to read the directions that go with other board games before you begin. The directions need to be long and thorough enough that I can understand the directions before I begin. It may need to include examples. Also, be sure to explain how the players will know who has won. Conservation Board Game Due May 2nd Extra Credit Thank you so much for all of your hard work and creativity on your projects so far this year! I hope you have a lot of fun with this one! -Alex Williams
