Introduction
 World History covers a wide variety of topics—we will
cover subjects like geography, religion, government, and
history.
 The basic set-up of this course is as follow:
 Basic Geography
 Intro to World History Key Themes/Ideas
 Region by Region tour through time:
 Africa
 Middle East
 Latin America
 Southeast Asia
 South Asia
 East Asia
 Australia
 Europe
Intro continued
 The key theme of the course will be the interaction of
all of these world cultures and how some cultures have
gained from these interactions and how some cultures
have been basically wiped out from these interactions.
What you need for this class
 Each day you should have the following:
 A. Writing instrument—I have a limited supply but am
not a pen or pencil store. If you have to borrow a pen or
pencil, you are responsible for giving it back.
 B. Notebook w/folder or a 3-ring binder. Need
something to take notes and hold assignments.
 C. Willingness to learn. Not every topic we cover will
fascinate you but every topic will have a lesson worth
learning and you must be willing to give it a chance.
Absences and Work
 We will follow the school rules regarding absences and
work; you will be given time to complete any
assignment you miss.
 However, IT IS NOT MY JOB TO COME FIND YOU
AND GIVE YOU YOUR MISSED WORK. I have about
150 total students and cannot be responsible for your
missing work.
Late Work
 You may hand in your work late in this class; I do not
believe in burying you for 1 mistake or 1 bad night.
 There is a deduction for each day the assignment is
late and it is as follows:
 1 day late—10%--example—40 point assignment/only
receive 36 points*
 2 days late—25%--32 out of 40*
 3 days or more—50%--20 out of 40*
THERE WILL BE ASSIGNMENTS IN WHICH THERE IS
NO FORGIVENESS AND A ZERO WILL BE PUT IN
IMMEDIATELY.
*Deduction will be for late/can still lose points for
wrong answers.

Zero in the Grade Book
 Any grade marked a “zero” are not final until the end
of the quarter.
 When an assignment is due and you did not turn it in,
a “L” will be put in the grade book. That “L” will turn
into a zero after 3 days.
 I will put a zero in the grade book to call your attention
that you are missing work.
 After the zero is in the grade book, you can receive no
more than 50% on the assignment.

 Some extra credit will be non-academic and some will
be school work.
 To be eligible for extra credit, you must NOT be
missing any assignments or work.
Mid-Terms and Finals
 We have both a mid-term and a final. The mid-term
and final count for 20% of your grade.
 Each quarter will count as 20%.
 The mid-term will include essay or essays and
questions from tests/quizzes that we have taken from
September until January.
 The final will include a small portion of questions
from the mid-term and a selection of questions from
tests that cover February to May.
Notebook/Binder Set up
 You are free to organize your class materials as you see
fit.
 You are to keep all paperwork that I give you until told
to dispose of it. I will usually tell you what to keep or
get rid of at the beginning of each quarter.
 Many assignments will not be given back after being
graded.
 Any graded assignment given back to you SHOULD BE

on my desk.

Handing in Assignments
 There is a black tower on the cart on the wall to your
left.
 The bottom slot is for 1st period, 2nd slot for 5th, 3rd slot
for 7th, 4th slot for 8th, and 5 for 9th.
 All turned-in work goes into the appropriate slot.
 The tower will be emptied each day to ensure that
things are graded and work is not stolen.
Wiki Page/Email
 Each unit’s assignments will be posted on my wiki
page.
 A copy of each assignment for the unit will also be
posted; I will not carry around a lot of extra copies of
assignments. You will receive one and if you lose it,
you must get it from the wiki page.
 My wiki address is http://pietlock.wikispaces.com/.
You can access the site from the staff section of the
high school web page.
 Email is [email protected]
Blackboard
 We will be moving from Wiki to Blackboard during
the school year.
 My hope is that we can get to a paperless classroom or
pretty close to it by June.
 I plan to have test, quizzes, written assignments, and
discussion questions on the site.
 It will take some time but that is my goal.
Final Thoughts
 The year will move quicker than you think it will today.
Before you know it, it will be done; in the meantime,
there is work to be done. Your grade will be
determined by your effort and attitude; if you want to
do well, you will.
