14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position

The primary function of this position is to plan wildlife management activities on public and private lands in various
counties (currently Barry, Calhoun, and Eaton Counties) throughout the Southwest Lower Peninsula Region.

The position is solely responsible for all aspects of the management of Barry, Middleville, as well as other smaller State
Game Areas, and co-management of the Kinney Waterfowl Production Area owned by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

This position will utilize the document "Guiding Principles and Strategies (GPS)" for setting strategic direction in
planning efforts and in setting work priorities.

Responsible for all aspects of state land administration and facility management on Barry, Middleville, and other assigned State
Game Areas. (GPS Goals 2 & 3)
Individual tasks related to the duty.

Administrating all aspects of Public Land management including land transaction reviews, Project Boundary designations,
survey requests, trespass resolution, mineral lease reviews, evaluate and issue Land Use and Event Permits, etc.

Develop management plans for State Game Areas and ensure that plans are vetted and executed.

Recommend land acquisitions and disposals and work through land acquisition process (MNRTF applications, presentations
to Township and County Boards to gain support for proposed acquisitions, act as the primary contact with local sellers).

Administrate all aspects of Facility Management at the listed Game Areas – includes maintenance or development of all
buildings, roads, gates, boundary signs, bridges, dams, dikes, pumps, water control structures, special use areas, trails, and
other infrastructure. This includes budgetary planning to complete projects and WIP administration.

Administrate the Department of Natural Resources’ responsibilities for the Barry State Game Area Equestrian Trail, North
Country Trail, and other special uses.

Set timber management directions for the listed Game Areas through the Compartment Review Process initiated at assigned
Game Areas and assist with on-the-ground administration. Administer timber management activities at other listed Game
Areas as needed.

Solely responsible for all wildlife habitat management, wildlife population surveys, and wildlife population management on
both private and public lands in Barry, Calhoun, and Eaton Counties. (GPS Goal 1)
Individual tasks related to the duty.

Develop Master Plans for listed Game Areas that drive habitat and wildlife management and annual workplans.

Plan and oversee work and budget planning processes for habitat and at the listed Game Areas, primarily through the
designation of management priorities, Work Unit Goals, and management plans.

Responsible for the administration of all wildlife population surveys within the listed Counties and Game Areas.

Monitor and assess game populations.

Review annually and revise species management plans as needed based on monitoring and assessment results

Recommend harvest regulations to the Natural Resources Commission and implement approved changes.

Partner with Local, Federal, and Private land managers to ensure wildlife habitat values are taken into consideration.

Partner with conservation organizations and groups to promote and enhance wildlife populations and habitat.

Implement non-game species management plans.

Assist with research and monitoring efforts to support conservation.

Assist with wildlife health monitoring through collection of carcasses and deer check station duties.

Responsible for all Privately Owned Cervid facility inspections in listed counties in order to protect free-ranging wildlife.

Implement urban, nuisance, and invasive wildlife programs across listed counties.

Responsible for investigating and reporting depredation of livestock by wildlife.

Represent the Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife Division to a variety of audiences (GPS Goal 5)

Prepare presentations on wildlife topics for sportsman’s clubs and other organizations in order to effectively communicate
Wildlife Division goals, programs, and values.

Respond to public requests for information or assistance including walk-ins, phone inquiries, and field contacts

Work with local news agencies to promote Wildlife Division programs and provide interviews when requested.

Assist with Wildlife Division’s presence at area sport shows and events.

The essential duties of this position are to plan wildlife management activities on state game and wildlife areas and private
lands using generally accepted wildlife management and ecosystem management principles and provide information to the
public.

position.
EDUCATION:
Possession of a bachelor's degree in the wildlife biological sciences with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in the areas of
entomology, mammalogy, ornithology, wildlife management, or zoology.

EXPERIENCE:
Wildlife Biologist 9 - No specific amount or type of experience required.
Wildlife Biologist 10 - One year of professional experience carrying out wildlife biology assignments equivalent to a
Wildlife Biologist in state service.
Wildlife Biologist P11 - Two years of professional experience carrying out wildlife biology assignments equivalent to a
Wildlife Biologist in state service, including one year equivalent to a Wildlife Biologist 10.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of regulations pertaining to wildlife in Michigan.
Knowledge of management of grassland, forested and wetland ecosystems.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of wildlife management.
Ability to use and analyze spatial data including maps, aerial photography, GPS, GIS and remotely sensed data.
