Alexandra Headland Skate and BMX Facility Upgrade
Project summary
The project involves refurbishment of the existing
skate and BMX facility at Alexandra Headland to
provide a unique, iconic, multi-purpose and multigenerational facility. Once redeveloped, the facility
will become a key recreational and social hub for
the youth and broader community of the Sunshine
Coast.
Community engagement
The community consultation process was an
integral component of the development of the skate
park. Council undertook the first stage of
community engagement with a specialised project
team including experienced skate park designers in
May 2016. Over 93 participants attended these
workshops to contribute their individual ideas and
suggestions for the upgrades. Additional feedback
from 189 individuals who responded to an online
survey was also considered, to ensure that
members of the community who were unable to
attend the workshops still had the opportunity to
provide input into the concept design.
The second stage of community engagement was
held in August 2016 and 63 participants attended
these workshops. Council presented two concept
design options and informed the community of the
feedback obtained from the previous community
workshops and online survey. Participants
participated in “round table” discussions to provide
feedback on their preferred concept option.
Additional feedback from 73 individuals who
responded to a second online survey from 8-20
August 2016 was also considered.
the capability for the facility to cope with more users
at one time.
The third stage of community engagement was held
in September 2016, when council and the project
team met with key stakeholders to ensure the final
concept plan would best work with the local
businesses and community.
Final concept plan
The final concept plan will be on display at the
skate park from 12 October – 9 November. Key
features of the design include a split level advanced
bowl with a depth of 6ft-8ft and an extension up to
9ft. This bowl is supported by a combination style
park that appeals to both the street and transition
users. Other key features include a 4ft mini bowl,
kicker to kicker with A-frame rail, stair set with
hubbas and adequate platform space to provide a
flexible site for event organisers to hold
competitions, demonstrations or learn to skate
workshops within the skate park. A stage located
underneath the existing Norfolk Island tree also
offers the opportunity for community events, and
seating and shade is provided for spectators.
Where to from here
The design team will now progress the
development of construction drawings. Construction
of the new facility is scheduled to commence in
April 2017. Project updates will be available on
council’s website.
Further information
All community feedback was used to develop the
final concept plan. The majority of feedback
received from the participants included the desire
for a larger and deeper bowl, more transitions and
A note from your local councillor
Alex Skate Park is one of a kind, and in my opinion, I doubt if there is any better
positioned anywhere in the world. It is a very popular meeting place for the young,
and the not so young.
Congratulations to the design team for the development of such a wonderful
recreational and social hub for the Sunshine Coast, and I look forward to its
completion next year.
