Any questions about what to do
during a modified lockdown?
10
In a lockdown, there are three
important things to remember...
• Listen to the
supervising adult
• Follow directions
• Remain as calm
and silent as
possible
Why would these three things be
important during a lockdown?
11
In case of a lockdown when there
is an intruder…
• Where are safe places in our classroom?
• LISTEN to the supervising adult, follow directions, remain as
quiet and calm as possible
12
Different kinds of instructions…
•Barricade
•Evacuate
•Counter
13
If During a Lockdown-Barricade
• What could we use
to barricade the
door if necessary?
14
If During a Lockdown - Evacuate
• What possible exits do
we have in our
classroom?
• What exits to the
building do we have
access to from our
classroom?
15
If we are to evacuate…LISTEN!
16
If during a lockdown - Counter
• What could we do or use
to counter an intruder if
they entered our
classroom?
17
Additional Discussion Points
• Hallway or Bathroom
• Cafeteria, Media Center, Gym, etc.

Modified Lockdown- Discussion
and Questions
• What questions do you have?
21
Lockdown: Barricade
• Classroom Instruction Ceases: A LOCKDOWN occurs when imminent danger
exists inside or outside the building that requires immediate LOCKDOWN of all
classrooms and office doors or occupied rooms.
• TEACHER or SUPERVISING ADULT:
• Scan the hallways (as you see appropriate) to check for students and direct them
to a safe, secure area.
• Lock the door
• Cover the door window, close blinds, and turn off lights, maintain silence
• Take attendance when safe to do so
• Ignore alarms and bells
• Make room appear unoccupied
• Move students away from doors and window
• Assess the situation
• If it is safe to do so EVACUATE. Direct other students that you see to join you.
• If it is not safe to EVACUATE, instruct students to barricade the door and move to a
safe location.
• Continue to LISTEN for announcements
22
Barricade: Discussion and
Questions
•
•
•
•
Is it safe to evacuate based on your location?
Who tells us what to do?
What might you use in your classroom to barricade your door?
Teachers/Supervising Adults: feel free to passively move
objects or demonstrate some barricading techniques (adults
only)
23
Lockdown: Counter
• Classroom Instruction Ceases: A LOCKDOWN occurs when imminent danger
exists inside or outside the building that requires immediate LOCKDOWN of all
classrooms and office doors or occupied rooms.

• If it is not safe to EVACUATE and the intruder is in the room, instruct the students
to COUNTER
• Continue to LISTEN for announcements
24
Counter-Discussion and Questions
• Is it safe to evacuate based on your location?
• Who tells us what to do?
• What can we do to COUNTER the intruder?
•
•
•
•
move around
make noise
throw objects to distract the intruder
work together to disarm and subdue intruder if possible
• keep the intruder on the ground
• Why is it important to understand WHY we and HOW we
counter?
• If the intruder is disarmed, do not pick up the weapon or take
it to the office. Place a trash can or chair over the weapon.
25
