North Canterbury Rugby Rugby Newsletter Week 16 Greetings Team, Judging by the emails and phone calls it must be coming up to finals time, with some very anxious coaches and supporters all concerned about their pathway to the finals. Trust you all take the time for the players to enjoy the journey and all the other benefits of contributing towards their TEAM performance. The North Canterbury JAB representative sides are in the process of being announced, or have already been so. The U11-South , U13 sides and U48kg sides appear elsewhere in this Newsletter. This week is in most instances the final rounds of Round Robin play in the competition grades, and some critical games are scheduled. The exceptions to this are the U11.5 and the U18 grades. While the outcomes of all matches in the Luisetti Seeds North Canterbury Div 1 Competition will affect the final seedings, the Oxford v Saracens match at Oxford will determine the 4th semi final spot. Saracens feature again in the main interest for the Mike Greer Homes North Canterbury Ltd Div 2 final round, a five point win would lift them from 4th to 3rd place, thereby avoiding a clash with the strong Hurunui side. The Mike Greer Homes North Canterbury Ltd Div 2 Reserve round also holds most interest in the contest Oxford between the home side and Saracens , the winner being able to avoid having to face Glenmark-Cheviot in next weeks semi final. Oxford will been treated to yet another high interest game with the shifting of the Mike Greer Homes North Canterbury Ltd U18 match between Oxford-Woodend and Rangiora High School to Oxford at 2.30pm, this competition has one more week of round robin next week with the top two teams progressing to the final on August 9th. Oxford face a” must win” match this week to give themselves a chance of making the finals. The strong Kaiapoi U16 team continue to dominate their North Canterbury competition but still need to win against Woodend-Ohoka to ensure the top seeding for the semi finals. The final round of the Mike Greer Homes North Canterbury Ltd U14.5 competition has been marred by the unavoidable defaults by two sides. In both instances the defaults reflect an anomaly of the DSLV’ introduced by NZRU for the 2014 season, the law variations state that unless teams can start with 15 players, the match must be defaulted. The two defaulting sides could not ensure that they would have 15 players available so rather than travel , in one case a long distance, and have to play a “friendly” game only , the early notice of default was made. This rule particularly affects the smaller unions and sub unions, and in my view requires review. We have all had experience of 13 and 14 a-side matches being able to be very competitive and safe in all Competition grades, not preferable, but certainly achieveable and providing rugby for a number of players, and depriving no-one of a game. Under the current rule at least 28-29 players are not playing. The U13 grade holds real interest with a number of scenarios available to finalise the Group A and B seedings. With just one week of play completed in the respective play off sections of the U11.5 is to early identify one match of importance above another.
