Agreement of Student
I understand that (a) it is my responsibility to notify the chaplain if there is any change to this service and justice
project; (b) I have fulfilled my Service and Justice project when I have (i) completed 20 hours for one year of
credit or 40 hours for two years of credit with this organization, (ii) turned in a completed log/ evaluation sheet,
and (iii) completed a reflection project and action for change (for 20- and 40-Hour Projects only). I also
understand that I will have extra requirements during my 10th grade social justice course that connect to my
service and justice project.

DEFINITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR A SERVICE & JUSTICE PROJECT
ESLA’s Service & Justice Program blends service learning and social justice education by engaging students in
service that is grounded in personal relationships and that challenges them to examine and resist systems of
inequality.
Requirements for Completion
1.
Sixty (60) hours of person-to-person service and justice work to graduate, normally completed
between ninth and eleventh grades (so that seniors have more time to focus on their Capstone)
2.
A minimum of twenty hours per school year until hours are complete
3.
A minimum of two 20-hour projects or one 40-hour project; A maximum of 20 out of the 60 hours may
be dedicated to miscellaneous projects/ organizations.
4.
The S&J contract submitted by the student and approved by the Dean of Chapel.
5.
A log of hours/ evaluation maintained by the student and signed by the site supervisor
6.
One ‘action for change’ that addresses an issue connected to your project such as writing a letter to a
public official, attending a protest, educating/ awareness raising
7.
A reflection project upon completion of the hours at a specific site
8.
Students must be actively engaged in a Service & Justice Project or have access to a former project
site during their 10th grade Social Justice course
Requirements for a Project Site
1. The work must be person-to-person with a local charitable organization, non-profit, public office or
political campaign, or social activism/ community organizing group AND
2. The work must be for a disempowered community such as people who are poor, homeless, sick, elderly,
targets of social prejudice based on race, class, gender, or ability, or otherwise disenfranchised. The
work may also be for the environment or animals as long as it is person-to-person, AND
3. The work must be performed on a volunteer basis (not for compensation of any kind), AND
4. The student may not work for an organization controlled by, or under the supervision of, a family member
Types of Activities That Count Towards a Person-to-Person Based S&J Project
1. Direct service with or for a disempowered community
2. Activism and advocacy such as attending a protest, getting signatures, community organizing, lobbying
elected officials, attending public hearings connected to your project
3. Relationship building, community organizing, education and awareness raising that is person-to-person
4. Summer projects. Also, the 9th grade J-Term counts for 10 hours
What Can’t Count Towards an S&J Project
1. Overseas service trips – these are wonderful but do not count towards S&J projects
2. Volunteering as a camp counselor at a summer camp or day care center (unless the camp or center serves
a community of need as its primary mission).
3. Clean-up projects, fundraising events, and administrative tasks in which the focus is on the activity and
not the relationship with people
