Introduction & key concepts
The University of Sussex use a software system called TurnitinUK to manage the marking process of
the e-Submission and e-Feedback system. This document is aimed at providing guidance to
members of staff in the creation and customisation of QuickMark Sets and Comments. For a more
general overview on how to use QuickMarks and Comments when marking, please follow this link:

QuickMark comments are specialised annotation tools and specific features of the TurnitinUK
GradeMark marking and feedback interface. It is assumed for the purpose of this guide that members
of staff reading this document have a basic working knowledge of TurnitinUK GradeMark.

What are QuickMark comments and Sets
QuickMark comments are pre-defined feedback notes which can be re-used to make for faster
document annotation. TurnitinUK provide a large number of QuickMark comments and the ability for
users to create their own. QuickMark Sets provide a way of labelling and grouping together related
comments.

Standard QuickMark Sets
TurnitinUK GradeMark comes pre-loaded with six QuickMark Sets, including the following:

Please note that you cannot rename or delete these Sets or their corresponding comments. You can
however add new or existing comments to them.

Custom QuickMark comments and Sets
You can also create your own QuickMark comments and Sets. Customised QuickMark Sets can
either consist of existing and custom QuickMark comments or a mix of both. Sets can be shared
between users and assignments which make them a really powerful tool for regular users of
GradeMark. Users can develop a quicker and more efficient marking process by creating libraries of
frequently used personalised feedback marks.

The ‘active Set’ indicates the Set which will load as default into the QuickMark comments menu of

Notice that the Sets provided by TurnitinUK have a padlock icon next to them in the Sets column. This
indicates that they are ‘locked’ and cannot be renamed, edited or deleted.
