The “Steering Committee” set up by the Management Committee has been silently working away at different projects of the Club. The extension of Bar Hours has been approved by the City of Whitehorse and the application is now with the Liquor Licensing Board for approval. See note elsewhere in this issue regarding the urgent need for more members to join the Bar Attendants Group. A quote has been received for the installation of a revised drawing of the large sign on the main fascia of our building. Revision to the Club Constitution is progressing slowly and will be brought to a Club Meeting in the future. An application for a grant has been lodged with the City of Whitehorse to replace the main timber floor of the club rooms. A number of new initiatives are being considered for the very near future. A number of meetings have been held with representatives of Bowls Victoria and the Committee believes that it is time for us to make a resolute move to increase our membership and up the image of our club. In an attempt to achieve this, it has been decided to introduce at least 3 dates when we will play fun games of bowls in the evening including a barbecue. Thursday, 18th October Thursday, 1st November and Thursday, 15th November. More details will be available in due course, and these events will be directed at the local community as well as our own members participating. When final arrangements are made, I will be seeking some members to put their hands up to help. Regards, Maurie. For this new 2012/2013 Season we have 77 members affiliated with Bowls Victoria. Due to the usual amount of unavailable players we have only entered two Saturday Pennant teams. WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS We welcome four new members to the club this season. Gail Antonie, Cherisse Newport, Derek Minter and Bill Urquhart. Please introduce yourself to these members and make them feel welcome. Please add the following names and phone numbers of these members to your ‘Programme Book’ Jean Harris...................9898 2953 Derek Minter................9898 8462 Cherisse Newport........9894 1077 Entries for our Club Championships are now open. Please add your names to the lists on the Notice Board and give your entry fees to the Secretary. $5.00 per person per event. NOTE:- Your Club Programme Book is available on the table near the Notice Board. SELECTION NOTES All Pennant Players are requested to read the “Selection Committee Notice” on the window alongside the Pennant Team Selections. Jack Mayes, Secretary. PIE NIGHT THURSDAY, 4th OCTOBER at 6.00 pm Following the eating of ‘pies and pasties,’ at approximately 7.00 pm it is intended to – ‘SWITCH ON THE LIGHTS’ Bring your bowling gear and enjoy some bowls for an hour or so under lights for the first time in ‘umpteen years’ Have a Great Day !! 1 FROM MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Following lengthy discussions at the last two Committee Meetings, it was unanimously agreed:“That all selected Tuesday and Saturday Pennant Players are required to contribute $2.00 to the ‘Transport Fund’ to assist with transport costs.” This money will be collected by the ‘skip of the day’ and will be passed on to the Treasurer via the ‘Team Manager.’ All drivers transporting players to ‘away games’ will be compensated for costs, and at the end of the season any surplus money in the fund will be used to offset costs of ‘end of season’ functions. LADIES CHAT Last month I omitted to thank several people for a lot of extra work they have put into the Club, my apologies. Kitchen cleaning – my belated thanks go to Muriel Minett (did two tasks), Jill Jackson, Jean Harris, Irene Hudson (did three tasks), Margaret Spence, and Elinor Morison. Your efforts were very much appreciated. It was decided that the net curtain in the ladies room was due for a wash, but it was so old, when immersed in water it fell to pieces. A special thank you goes to Muriel Minett who purchased material and made the replacement curtain. Thank you Muriel it is a big improvement and it is a pleasing result. On Tuesday 4th September prior to playing a practice match with Donvale, it was pleasing to see so many of the Tuesday pennant players (both male and female) at the meeting. A welcome was given to a new member Gail Antonie. Mary Murphy spoke to the group on the forthcoming practice matches and pennant. One slight change in the Tuesday Pennant Guide lines reads: “Games will commence not later than 10.30am. The two trial ends must be completed before 10.30am.” This means that if a team has finished their roll up before 10.30am they can immediately start their game, instead of waiting for the 10.30 bell; but if it is 10.30am and a side has not finished their roll up they do have to stop the roll up and commence the game. It is also a warning not to be late arriving at the playing venue. The first match for the second side is a game away against Mt Waverley 4. Last year our first side only lost one game and that was played against Mt Waverley 4 when the game was at Mt Waverley. At the end of the year our first side went up a division and Mt Waverley 4 went down a division and so Mt Waverley 4 is now playing our second team! (Are you still following me? I do hope so!). By the time you read this, that game will have been played, and the result may be in this edition of the newsletter. The first side has a Bye. Reminder: Cup Week, Tuesday Pennant will be played on Thursday the 8th November. Cup Day, 6th November, is a casual dress day where we play bowls in the morning, have lunch then follow the ‘horses’ in the afternoon. Good bowling to all and enjoy the game. Regards, June. SPONSORSHIP On behalf of all members of the North Blackburn Bowling Club it gives me great pleasure to extend our appreciation to the Doncaster East Bendigo Community Bank and to Ray Lord in particular, for his consideration in presenting to the club the gift of a ‘defibrillator’. A defibrillator is a life saving device which all members can and perhaps should learn how to operate. It has a built in audio system which commands you step by step when and how to use it, it could save a life. There is also a D,V.D of instructions. The bank also engaged a nurse to come along to instruct us in its use, and already twenty two of our members have received instruction. The defibrillator is a very expensive piece of equipment of absolute necessity. We are very grateful. Ron Faulkner. Thanks also go out once more to Juliet Ying of ‘Gillians Jewellery’ who donated two satin purses for our Variety Night Raffle. Christina of ‘Victorianna Rose’ gave me a lovely hamper gift to put into the raffle. Thanking you both again for your generosity, the prize winners were delighted. Ron F. CASINO TRIP The next Casino Trip will be held on Monday, 1st October, with the cost being $20.00 It is really important that we get 30 people to make this day viable. Any less than 30 becomes an additional cost to the Club. You are encouraged to ask any friends to come with you for the day. NOT RESTRICTED TO CLUB MEMBERS. Coach departs at 9.00 am from the club car park and returns by 3.00 pm Lunch (all you can eat) at the Casino Bistro is included in the cost. SPECIAL NOTE OF THANKS to Bill Letch & Richard Lovett for being prepared to provide coaching for the Tuesday Pennant Teams on Thursday mornings. Also to Ron Faulkner for instructing a group as to how to use the newly donated ‘defibrillator.’ Mary Murphy. 2 JUST FOR FUN URGENT NEED To help cover the decision made to increase the ‘Bar Hours’ and include more ‘Social Events’ in the club’s programme, there is a desperate need for 2 or 3 more members to join the ‘Bar Attendants Group’ Please contact Ern Minett (Licensee) or Bill Burke (Bar Manager) for further information. What’s the difference between a camel and a diplomat? A camel can work for days without drinking whereas a diplomat can drink for days without working. Owning a pet is the best thing about being human. No other animal takes a completely different species into its home, providing food and shelter just for the pleasure of its company. INDOOR BOWLS Headline in the city paper: “Marijuana Issue sent to a Joint Committee” A hospital is a place where they wake you at midnight to give you a sleeping pill Now that the weather is starting to get a little better, we are expecting that more folks will come out and join with us for what is a great time of fun and friendship on a Monday night. Last week we had 18 players which is a good deal better than the past few weeks during winter. Thanks to those folk who come a little earlier to help out with the mats, bowls and supper etc. This is much appreciated since I have had the operation on my right hand which makes things a little awkward. Many, many thanks and regards to all, Keith T. Patient to Psychiatrist: “No, I am not troubled by improper thoughts. I enjoy them” Mother to teenage daughter: “Tonight was your little brother’s turn to choose the meal. We are having bubble gum”. Employer to worker: “Don’t think of me as the boss. Think of me as a workmate who’s always right”. Woman paying bills, to husband:”Our financial situation is definitely fluid. We are going down the gurgler”. HOUSE CLEANING No matter how well you nurse a grudge, it will never get better. Two workers were discussing their respective employers. “My boss” said one, “is a cheapskate and a meanie”. “My boss,” said the second, “well, you just can’t help liking him. If you don’t he fires you” Members are asked to take note that this is a very important duty to maintain the neatness of our club facilities. Please play your part by attending as required so the job can be done efficiently. I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans OCTOBER Robert Ryan, Keith Lawson, Phil Kinnear. NOVEMBER Charles Fletcher, Angus Watson, Val Wick. I was thinking about old age and decided that it is when you still have something on the ball but you are just too tired to bounce it. I thought about making a movie for folks my age and call it “Pumping Rust”. AROUND THE GREENS WORKING BEES A TAP ON THE SHOULDER A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the kerb, and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, and then the still shaking driver said, 'I'm sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me.' The frightened passenger apologized to the driver and said he didn't realize a mere tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much. The driver replied, 'No, no, I'm sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my first day driving a cab................... I've been driving a hearse for the last 25 years. Working bees are being held on the last Thursday of every month at 9.00 am and it has been pleasing to see the amount of work that has been carried out during recent months. There are always plenty of little jobs to be done to keep our facilities in good condition. Members are encouraged to come along for an hour or so to help keep our club grounds and surrounds in good condition, You don’t have to be an expert in any field - just prepared to give a hand.
