We apologise for the late issue of the November 2012 Newsletter. The delay is due to the unexpected resignation from the club of Assistant Secretary and Editor, Alan Wright. Alan did many good things for our club and will be missed. WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS We welcome yet another new member to the club this season. He is Johann (pronounced Yohan) Van Den Driesen. Please introduce yourself to him and give him a real Blackburn North welcome. Stand by for the installation of the new sign on the main fascia of our building. The sign has been completed and will be installed shortly. At last, official approval of the extended bar hours has been received from the Victorian Gambling & Liquor Control Commission. We now have approval to operate the bar until 10.30pm Monday to Thursday, 11.30pm Friday & Saturday and 10.00pm on Sunday. Unfortunately our application for a grant to replace the main floor of the club house was not successful. We will be exploring other possible sources of funding in the not too distant future. In the meantime the existing floor is quite safe for use. Work on the revision of the Club Constitution has been temporarily halted because of impending changes to the Associations Incorporation Act on which our Constitution is based. We still plan to present our revised Constitution to members at the annual general meeting in May 2013. Much work has been done in preparation for the Twilight Bowls sessions planned for 1st, 15th and 29th November. The first session on 1st November was not successful due to appalling weather conditions on the night. We are hoping for better weather on 15th and 29th. Regards, Maurie. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Ralph Lloyd has done a good job organising this season’s Club Championships. Members are requested to ensure that they play their games on time so that there is not a backlog of matches. SATURDAY PENNANT After six rounds of the new season our teams are performing reasonably well. Team No.1 is in 9th position on the ladder, while Team No.2 sits in 4th place. Hopefully we can improve on this with the return of a few of our members. SOCIAL BOWLS Wednesday social bowls are again well under way. Thank you to Geoff Henshaw for organising Wednesdays again this year, also to new member, Derek Minter, for being a willing helper to Geoff. Well done. Bankers social bowls for members not playing pennant are played on Saturday afternoons. If you would like a game, put your name on the list on the notice board. GREENS Congratulations to John Duthy and his team for the excellence of our greens. They are great to play on. MELBOURNE CUP DAY I would like to thank Richard Lovett and his team for their work in organising Melbourne Cup Day for us and running 3 Cup Sweeps. Jack Mayes, Secretary. Have a Great Day !! 1 Kitchen help is needed for both Tuesday and Saturday pennant. Tuesday help is needed starting at about 11.30 a.m. and Saturday about 2.30 p.m. If you are able to help it would be appreciated, there is a roster list for Saturday on the notice board. Help is needed especially on the following Saturdays when a total of eight rinks plus bankers will be in use as a team from Donvale B.C. is also playing on: FROM GENERAL COMMITTEE Travel Allowance – At its meeting on 12 October the Committee decided not to request selected Saturday Pennant players to contribute $2 to the Transport Fund to assist with transport costs. Pie Night – Members are advised that Pie Night is free to members only. Members are welcome to bring members of their family but they will have to be paid for and names included in advance on the attendance sheet to assist with catering. Clearing Greens after Pennant Matches – At its meeting on 9th November the Committee decided that the rink finishing last be responsible for clearing up the greens, sun shades, score board etc. This must be done. th 17th November, 1st and 15th December, and 2nd and 16th February. On 22nd December and 12th January as well as a team from Donvale B.C. there will also be a team from Mitcham B.C. making twelve rinks plus bankers in use. Your Club needs you. The last game before Christmas for Tuesday pennant is played on 18th December, after this game we have our Tuesday Christmas Celebration. All who play on that day are asked to bring a small plate of food, in the morning, for this Celebration. Reminder: it has been customary to give a card to your opponent on this last game that means you have to remember to bring both food and the card. CASINO TRIP The next Casino Trip will be held on Monday, December, with the cost being $20.00 It is really important that we get 30 people to make this day viable. Any less than 30 becomes an additional cost to the Club. You are encouraged to ask any friends to come with you for the day. NOT RESTRICTED TO CLUB MEMBERS. Coach departs at 9.00 am from the club car park and returns by 3.00 pm Lunch (all you can eat) at the Casino Bistro is included in the cost. 3rd Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy Christmas and New Year, and come back on Tuesday 8th January for the first game of 2013 refreshed after the break. To those on the sick list – get well soon. Regards June . LADIES CHAT INDOOR BOWLS The pennant teams for both Tuesday and Saturday are now on the computer and it is very colourful thanks to Russell Casey. For those of you on the Internet, it is easy to see if you are playing pennant, without having to make a special journey to the Club. After six games both teams were 4th in their respective sections, but another game has since been played where both teams lost and at the time of writing this, the ladders have not been updated to reflect these results. Indoor bowls have settled down with a regular attendance of 16 players each week Thanks to those folk who come a little earlier to help out with the mats, bowls and supper etc. This is much appreciated since I have had the operation on my right hand which makes things a little awkward. Many, many thanks and regards to all, Keith T. Christmas is Coming! 2 TRIVIA NIGHT SPONSORS NEWS! The next club Trivia Night will be held on Saturday, 1st December at 6.30pm. After being in a coma for nearly six months, she woke up and saw that she was no longer pregnant. Frantically she asked the doctor about her baby. The doctor replied, “You had twins, a boy and a girl. The babies are fine. However they were poorly at birth and had to be christened immediately, so your brother Paddy came in and named them.” The woman thought to herself, ‘OMG no, not me brother. He’s a clueless idiot.’ Expecting the worst, she asked the doctor, “Well, what’s my daughter’s name?” “Denise” said the doctor. The new mother was somewhat relieved and thought to self, “Wow, that’s a really beautiful name. I guess I was wrong about my brother. I really like Denise.” Then she asked, “So what’s the boy’s name, then?” The doctor replied: “Denephew.” Prices are negotiable i.e. they go up for a higher bid. Enquiries to Maurie Pagram or Elinor Morison. COLTS V FILLIES The annual Cup Day contest between Colts and Fillies resulted in a 7 all draw; but as it was a contert of 3 vs 4 the Colts were obliged to take off 25%, leaving their last 3 points of minor value! It would be great to see more players in the contest in 2013. AROUND THE GREENS WORKING BEES Working bees are being held on the last Thursday of every month at 9.00 am and it has been pleasing to see the amount of work that has been carried out during recent months. There are always plenty of little jobs to be done to keep our facilities in good condition. Members are encouraged to come along for an hour or so to help keep our club grounds and surrounds in good condition, You don’t have to be an expert in any field - just prepared to give a hand. Next date is 29th November. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut and still think they are sexy. 3 This Newsletter kindly printed courtesy of the North Blackburn Shopping Centre Management.
