Breck Track and Field
Team Guidelines
TEAM RULES: 1. Train to Improve & 2. Be a Good Teammate
Effort and Attitude are the only two variables over which you have control. How
you choose to control these two variables will determine how positive your
experience on this team will be. If you come to practice and contests with a positive
attitude and the willingness to give your full effort, you and this team will have a
great season.
What does it mean to Train to Improve?
 Warm up and cool down properly for all workouts and meets.
 Give your best effort at all times.
 Always stretch.
 Eat a post-workout snack within 20 minutes of your workout or event to help
your muscles recover.
 Eat balanced, nutritious meals to fuel your body.
 Drink plenty of water to stay properly hydrated.
 Get plenty of sleep so you are well rested.
 Take injuries seriously. If you think you may be injured, notify a coach
immediately.
 Focus on your individual and team goals. Practice mental imaging to prepare
your mind for success.
 IF YOU TRAIN EFFECTIVELY, YOU WILL BUILD ENDURANCE, SPEED,
STRENGTH, AND FLEXIBILITY. YOU WILL ALSO DEVELOP DISCIPLINE AND
CONFIDENCE. YOU WILL GET BETTER.
What does it mean to be a Good Teammate?
 Choose a positive attitude. Bring it with you and share it each day. Have fun
and smile.
 Be on time for all practices. Take care of outside responsibilities at other
times.
 Take your academic life seriously and be a good citizen in the classroom and
the school.
 Represent yourself well at all times. Remember that you represent, not only
yourself, but also Breck School, the team, your parents and your family.
 Treat teammates, competitors, coaches, and meet officials with
respect. Follow the Golden Rule.
 Stay clean and drug free. Follow all MSHSL rules regarding tobacco, alcohol
and other drugs.
 Communicate with the coach in advance if you must miss any part of practice
or meet.
 Communicate with the coach if you are having any problems related to the
team.




Be safe. When leaving campus, run alertly, against traffic and no more than
two runners abreast.
Believe in yourself, your teammates and your coaches.
Encourage your teammates, both at practice and at meets.
IF YOU TAKE YOUR ROLE AS A TEAMMATE SERIOUSLY, YOU WILL MAKE
OUR TEAM BETTER
What if an athlete is not meeting these two expectations?
 If you think a teammate is not meeting expectations, discuss it with him/her
privately and respectfully.
 If the issue is not resolved after your discussion, you may then take the issue
to the coach.
 If the coach believes that an athlete is not meeting expectations, he/she will
discuss it with them privately and respectfully. A specific plan for
improvement will be discussed.
 If an athlete does not improve the situation after intervention from the coach
or commits a serious violation of the team rules, disciplinary action will be
taken. The following are possible consequences:
 Suspension for one or more meets
 Loss of letter
 Dismissal from the team
 Schedule
The first practice will be on March 9th.
All weekday practices begin at 3:30pm sharp.
Be ready to TRAIN TO IMPROVE and BE A GOOD TEAMMATE!
Competition Levels
In regular season meets everyone will be able to compete in the events the coaches
feel they will have the highest level of success. In relay, championship and section
meets, there will be limited entries and the coaches will decide who competes in
those meets. Athletes may be asked to compete in alternative events in order for the
team to compete at the highest level possible.
Attendance Expectations
 Be at practice every day on time. Captains will begin the warm-up promptly
at the start of practice.
 Come prepared with your practice shoes and clothes. We will practice
regardless of weather, so have clothes for all conditions, including cold, wind,
and rain.
 If you are ill and miss school, you are excused from practice.
 If you are injured and cannot practice, you are still expected to attend for an
alternative workout.
 Take care of appointments outside of practice time.
 Athletes are highly encouraged to ride the bus home with the team after a
meet. If you must leave with your parent, you must sign out with your head


coach at the meet. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE MEET WITH A
FRIEND’S PARENT, only your own parent or guardian.
ALL ATHLETES WHO LEAVE WITH A PARENT DURING A MEET MUST HAVE
THEIR PARENT SIGNOUT THEIR ATHLETE ON THE CHECKOUT SHEET KEPT
BY THE COACHES
If you must miss practice or a meet for any reason outside of illness, the
athlete or the athlete’s parent(s) must notify the coach in advance.

Attendance Policy
 Practice is the key to improvement, so attendance is mandatory.
Any absence for which the coach is not notified in advance is considered an
unexcused absence.
 On the first unexcused absence, the coach will give the athlete a verbal
warning.
 On the second unexcused absence, the athlete will miss the next meet.
 In the event of a third unexcused absence, additional consequences will
occur.
 Absence the day before a meet (without talking with a coach first) means no
competition; however, you must attend the meet and help in any way
possible.
 The coach reserves the right to modify this policy at his/her discretion.
Footwear
Good training shoes are a MUST. Competition Shoes (spikes, throwing, jumping) are
also important. We would like to have all runners in spikes whenever possible. If
there are questions, ask your event coach.
Bus Times/Early Release
Bus times will be posted no later than the day before a competition and the bus will
leave at the assigned departure time. If an early release is necessary, that time will
be posted the day before the competition. An early release will be no more than 10
to 15 minutes before the bus time and it is the student-athletes’ responsibility to
have the equipment ready at the time the bus leaves.
Uniforms
Each eligible student-athlete will be issued a track and field uniform. Each uniform
consists of a top and shorts and a warm-up. Each top and short is numbered. The
numbers will be recorded by the coaching staff and turned into the Athletics
Department. Each student-athlete is expected to take care of the uniform and is
expected to turn in their uniform at the end of the season. If the uniform is not
returned the athlete will be charged a replacement fee.
Schedule/Important Dates
Philosophically, we try not to have more than one meet a week. This gives our
athletes plenty of time to stay on top of their homework. This changes once we get
to the post season.
