IZ match management process

Match Management
One of the oldest traditions of the I Zingari Australia Cricket Club has been the
role of match manager and the concept of sharing responsibilities between all
club members. It is both an honour and a responsibility to manage a match.
Much of the success of the IZ team and fixture rests upon the ability of the
manager to organise the team, game and day.
You have been selected to manage a team because your fellow members believe
you are capable and trust that you will deliver a good team and enjoyable fixture.
As match manager you will also be asked to represent IZingari as Captain. You
may of course choose to assign this role to another player if you wish.
This document is designed to assist you in managing a match and answer
such questions as:
•
•
•
•
How do I most efficiently get a team together.
Who do I contact if I have questions
What do I need to do to ensure a game takes place
What needs to be done on the day at Camden or Northbridge to
organise a fixture?
If you have any questions at any time please feel free to contact the Secretary or
a member of the committee and thank you in advance for your efforts.

Managing a Match
Managing a match typically involves:
i)
organising a team and verifying with the opposition the details of the game
ii)
ensuring key equipment makes it to the ground
iii)
organising the game on the day.
You will have been assigned a game or games to manage. If you are unable to
manage a game then you are encouraged to swap with another match manager. If
you are unable to swap then please contact the club secretary as early as possible.
Some match managers who are unable to play on a given day may organise a team
and hand over the day management to a player.

Organising Teams
When to start organising a side:
•
•
•
You should start no later than three and better four weeks prior to the match with
the aim of having a full side a week prior.
Starting early will mean less phone calls, stress and work for you as the match
manager as you will find far more people who are available.
The earlier you start the more likely you are to have a balanced side.
Contacting people to play:
•
•
•
•
•
The secretary and treasurer maintain a list of members contact details. Contact
the Secretary if you need to get the contact details of members. The list is also
posted to the website. Password is “camden”.
It is important to put a balanced side on the oval. It improves the likelihood of a
win as well as improves everybodyʼs enjoyment.
Feel free to contact the secretary or a member of the committee if you need some
advice on contacting players or getting an idea of whether members bat, bowl or
keep.
You may contact guests to play but preference should be given to members. If
you are short of players for a given game it is suggested that you utilise your own
cricketing contacts as well as getting in touch with the secretary or some of the
other members of the committee who may be able to give you some ideas of
names.
The website is an avenue through which members will contact you to play. They
will await a confirmation from you that they are down to play.
•
•
Pre-assigned players. To reduce the numbers of phone calls a match manager
needs to make a match has had players pre-assigned. This list should be treated
with caution. Members forget, ignore or for a variety of reasons donʼt replace
themselves. You should therefore contact this group at the outset to confirm their
availability.
A person who has confirmed that they wish to play is obliged to find a
replacement of similar type to themselves. It is their responsibility to do so. You
may assist them in this endeavour to ensure a side is on the paddock.
Contacting the Opposition.
•
•
From time to time we find some confusion about game dates and times. It is very
important to contact the opposition match manager a a couple of weeks prior to
the game and:
1. Confirm they have a team.
2. Confirm starting time
3. Confirm location
4. Confirm date
5. Confirm number of overs to be bowled
6. Advise them of wet weather procedures and your contact number
The Fixtures Coordinator can be contacted to find out the opposition contact
point.
Confirming availability and details with the team
•
A week out it is recommended that you contact the team and advise of the:
1. Starting Time
2. Time to be at the ground
3. Location of the ground
4. Wet weather procedures.
5. Transportation possibilities.
6. Any duties you wish to delegate.
7. Your personal contact details.
Getting the incidentals to the ground.
Check that the following will be taken to the ground. This includes:
Kit
Cricket Ball
Score Book
Flag
Keys
Lunch, Arvo Tea, Drinks.
You may have to check with the last weeks match manager
as to who has the kit and work out how it is to be transported
to the ground. At the close of play you should ensure that a
player who is playing next weekend takes the kit.
You will have to check that a new cricket ball is in the kit. If
you canʼt verify this with last weeks match manager then
contact the Club Secretary.
You should check that a score book is with the kit. If it isnʼt it
is suggested that you contact the previous match manager,
club statistician, or secretary.
Ensure that the flag is with the kit.
See Notes on Northbridge or Camden.
See Notes on Northbridge or Camden.
Managing Duties
•
•
There are several duties to be done at the ground. It is advisable that the Match Manager
delegate some of those duties. A duties sheet is attached and this will assist you in
managing the day but please remember it is the match managers responsibility that the
duties are done so please understand what needs to be done.
It is suggested that you email a copy of the duty sheet prior to the game as well as post a
copy on the changing room wall.
Wet Weather Handling and Cancellations
•
•
•
•
If it has been wet prior to the match contact the groundsman to see if the game
can be played. If it must be cancelled contact the opposition match manager as
well as your own players.
You may like to divide the phone calls up amongst
some of the first people you contact.
If it is wet on the day of the game you will probably get some calls. Do not cancel
home games lightly for it is not only a lost opportunity to play some cricket but it
also has a financial impact upon the club. Be sensible and use your discretion.
See if you canʼt get in contact with some one who lives near the ground and who
is playing, and if this isnt possible get to the ground yourself.
In arranging the game you may like to ask people to contact you in case of
concern about wet weather. This will save you ringing around but may anger the
wife as you are likely to get early morning phone calls.
Remember that a game in Camden does require people to drive a reasonable
distance so you will have to cancel reasonably early in the morning if you are
going to cancel.
Managing a Match at Northbridge
•
We play matches at Northbridge with the continual good will of Shore School.
The arrangement has worked well and will continue to work well if IZingari follow
the simple rules of:
1. Returning things to how they were when we arrived.
2. Treating the facilities with respect.
•
It is important that each IZingari member is mindful of this and it is the match
managerʼs responsibility to ensure that the Club, its guests and opposition acts
accordingly. Please ensure that the facilities are returned to an appropriate
condition at the end of the dayʼs play. Failure to do so may be very detrimental to
the club and schools relationship.
The club generally uses the A ground however there are times when we are required
to use either C or D ground.
At the start of the Game
Keys
Keys can be picked up from The Secretary or the Assistant
Secretary. The keys must be returned to the individual from
whom you collected them at the close of the dayʼs play.
Gates
See that someone gets to the ground 1 hour to 45 minutes prior
to the start of play and opens the gates to the ground. This will
require the keys.
Changing Sheds Both IZ and visitors use the “Visitors Change Rooms” which
are located underneath the main pavilion. IZ use the area
immediately to the right. You will be required to open up the
changing sheds and the door through to the toilets.
Covers
Covers should be taken off with care and placed to the far side
of the ground. If the day is clear they may be packed away on
the trolley and returned to their home in the far shed. You will
need a key to place them in the far shed. You will need a few
people to pack the covers away.
Stumps
Place the club stumps and bales in the centre
Score Board
Plug in the score board control. (This can be found in the
locker in the back room of the pavilion. The locker will most
probably be locked.) It s important that the control panel is
plugged in prior to plugging in the scoreboard.
1. Unlock the scoreboard.
2. Put the IZ nameplate in the scoreboard.
3. Plug in the scoreboard.
4. Open up the shutters.
5. Lock the door to the scoreboard prior to commencing the
game.
Flag
Run the flag up the scoreboard flag pole.
Drinks
Prepare the game drinks and put them in the fridge.
Witches Hats
In matches where witches hats are required to mark a
boundary they can be found in the A ground scoreboard on
thee ground level
At the end of the game
Kit, Scorebook
Ask around the team to see if there is a player playing next
week and ask that they take the kit home. Do not leave the kit
at the ground.
Changing Sheds Ensure that all rubbish has been cleared out of the shed and
lock the bathroom and shed doors.
Covers
Ensure that the covers, hessian, pegs have been packed away
and returned to the shed. Very rarely we might be required to
put the covers down after a game. You will be notified of this
event. Unless expressly notified under no conditions should
you leave the covers down.
Clean Up
Clean up the sitting area and area in front of the pavilion.
Placing all rubbish in the bin. Return any crockery inside.
Wash up
Wash up all crockery, cups, and benches. Return all cups,
plates, and crockery to their appropriate cupboard. Place
IZingari drinks, tea etc in the IZingari cupboard and lock. Clean
out inside bins and place in large bins outside. Remember to
leave the place in a clean condition no matter how we found it
in the morning.
Score Board
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Replace the IZ nameplate with the Shore Name Plate
Unplug the scoreboard.
Roll down the shutters.
Lock the pavilion
Return the scoreboard control panels to the locker and
lock the door.
Flag
Take the flag down from the pole and return to the kit.
Gates
Lock the gates after the last car has left.
Witches Hats
At the end of the match witches hats should be returned to the
A ground scoreboard.
Other Important Considerations
•
Cancelling.
•
Covers.
•
Hitting Up
•
Breakages
•
Parking
•
Locks
•
•
Spikes
Alcohol
Cancelling a match any time should not be done lightly.
Doing so at Northbridge does cost the club money. If you
must cancel do so as early as you can, notify the secretary,
contact the groundsman and inform them that you will not be
using the ground on the weekend.
It is the IZ match managers responsibility to put the covers
down. If the school is playing on the Saturday they may put
the covers down after the match if weather is looking
inclement but this is not guaranteed. If it looks like raining it is
worth while contacting a couple of IZds guys who live in close
proximity and putting the covers down.
The first people to the ground should pull the covers back to
allow the wicket to breath prior to the commencement of the
match. Once more people arrive the covers can be cleared
away.
IMPORTANT. Covers should not be left on after a match. If
they are there is potential for a fungus to grow which could kill
the wicket and any chances of our playing their again. If wet
somebody is required to take the covers off even if the game
is cancelled !!.
The school asks that people do NOT hit up into the picket
fences. IZ must not only set an example but ensure our
guests do not hit into the pickets.
Any breakages should be reported via the Secretary to the
school.
Park only in recognised car spots. Players are not to drive
around the ground.
Some of the locks are difficult to open. Persevere they do
open !!
Players are not to wear spikes in the nets or in the pavilion
Do not leave alcohol in an accessible place. This includes the
fridge. Always lock it away in the IZ locker, which is the top
right cupboard in the long room of the pavilion. Remember it
is a schoo!!
Financials and Hospitality
•
•
The opposition is expected to pay $220 for match fees for a game at Northbridge.
The match manager is to convey this to the Treasurer. If possible please keep
the cash and send a cheque.
IZ will typically provide, afternoon tea, drinks, and after match drinks. How the
match manager does this is at their discretion. The match manager is
encouraged to be hospitable and creative. A typical and basic day will be:
Drinks
Afternoon Tea
After Match Drinks
•
•
Cordial
Tea, Arnottʼs Creams, Milk, Sugar.
Light Beer and some chips
A levy of $3 a beer typically covers the cost of the nibbles and arvo tea.
The match manager should check with the previous match manager as to what
tea, sugar, cordial, beer is left over from the previous match and is stored in the
IZ cupboard. Alternatively it may be sufficient to get to the ground early, check
and then go down to Woolworths at the Northbridge Shopping Centre.
Managing a Match at Camden
•
•
A cricket game at Camden is as much about a game of competitive cricket as it is
about a social outing in the country. As such the lunch during the game or the
BBQ or drinks after the game is integral to everyones enjoyment.
The match manager organises the social aspects and is free to do what they wish
so long as they work within the constraints of returning $ to the club at the end of
the day and charging no more than $25 per head for the cricket and social
provisions.
At the start of the Game
Keys
Keys to the pavilion can be obtained from the Secretary.
Changing rooms IZ uses the right hand side room and visitors the left hand side

the ground.

Financials and Hospitality
•

All players are expected to contribute $25 for the day. This is to cover the game
and all social aspects including food and drink.
The match manager should return to the club at the end of the day between $200
- $250. This should be conveyed to the treasurer. A cheque can either be mailed
to the treasurer or the amount can be directly deposited into the I Zingari
Australiaʼs bank account by BPAY.
The gathering of the provisions can be done on the day or during the game.
Camden has a large Woolworths as well as a chicken shop – it is located about
10 minutes in the car from the ground. It is not recommended that provisions are
purchased prior to the day due to the risk of weather cancelling the game.
The exact format is up to the match manager. IZ will typically provide either a
lunch or a BBQ dinner, perhaps a light morning tea and some after match drinks:
Drinks
Lunch
After Match Drinks
Coffee and Tea
•
Cordial
Cold Chicken or cold meats, Salads & Bread
Light Beer and chips, dips and savoury biscuits.
Donʼt forget the milk
The match manager should check with the previous match manager as to what
tea, sugar, cordial, beer is left over from the previous match and is stored in the
ground.

GAS TO BUILDING
The Gas bottles on the outside of the pavilion are the source of
energy for both the stove in the kitchen and the hot water for the
showers and kitchen sink.
THE GAS SHOULD BE TURNED OFF AT THE BOTTLE AT THE
CLOSE OF THE DAY.
 Turn the gas on by turning the round nob on the top of the gas
bottle to the left so that the gas can flow from the bottle to the
building. Ensure that the lever on the wall is turned so that the
long arm of the lever is pointing towards the open and full
bottles of gas. Note that you should only be using one gas
bottle at a time and therefore only one nob should be turned to
on.
 Turn the gas off by turning the round nob on top of the gas
bottle to the right until the flow of gas from the bottle stops.
 You should only need to turn the lever when one of the gas
bottles has been emptied.
 If you notice that both tanks are running close to empty please
advise the secretary.
HOT WATER FOR THE SHOWERS
1. To heat the water for the showers ensure that the gas is being
supplied to the building. (See “Gas to the Building”).
2. Check that the valve to the hot water system is open by turning
the yellow lever away from the wall
3. Follow the instructions, which are stuck, on the gas heater for
lighting the pilot light. You can see if the pilot light has been lit
by looking in the hole at the base of the heater. Please note that
it will take the full 40 seconds to light the heater.
4. Allow an hour to heat up the hotwater. It is best to light shortly
after midday to ensure hot water for the showers after the
game. There is no need to light it to early as it will just waste
the gas.
ON
OFF
GAS FOR THE STOVE
1. To light the stove ensure that gas is being supplied to the
building. (See info on Gas to building)
2. Ensure all burners are off.
3. Turn gas cock (yellow) located under the bench top to “on”.
4. Use gas lighter to light burners as required (gas lighters kept in
top drawer).
WARNING: Be very careful that you turn the
gas supply to the stove off by turning the yellow
gas cock under the bench to “off”. Failure to do
so will fill the building with Gas.
