Irish Swimmers in Record Breaking Form at NAC

Andrew Meegan continued his impressive form from Day 1 of the Carlton Irish Long Course Swimming
Championships when he set another Irish Senior Record, this time in the 800m Freestyle final. The Aer Lingus
swimmer took over 3 seconds off his own record set in 2009 finishing in 8:10.65. In the same race Meegan’s
Aer Lingus teammate Conor Turner set a new Irish Junior Record in a time of 8:19.15 to claim silver.
Tallaght and NAC Performance Centre swimmer Brendan Hyland was also in record breaking form today, the
18 year old set a new Irish Junior and Senior Record in the 400m Individual Medley Final. His time of 4:27.45
knocked Niall Wynn’s 2011 Record of 4:27.96 from the books. Kilkenny’s Jane Roberts set a new standard in
the 100m Backstroke final. Roberts broke her own junior record time of 1:04.40 finishing first in 1:04.22.
And in the women’s 50m Butterfly final, Shauna O’Brien of UCD Swim Team shaved .11 of a second off the 8
year old record held by Julie Douglas, her time of 27.77 placed her second to Egypt’s Faria Osman (26.80).
Katinka Hoszu continued her dominance at the meet claiming Gold in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley,
Hosszu’s time of 4:38.67 is the 5th fastest time in Europe this year. Sycerika McMahon (4:48.38) was the first
Irish competitor home in the 400m Individual Medley picking up her third title of the championships.
Barry Murphy got closer to the World Championship time when he was the fastest qualifier from the semi-finals
of the 100m Breaststroke, his time of 1:01.42 is a season’s best. Fiona Doyle was also the fastest qualifier out
of the women’s 100m Breaststroke semi’s, following a personal best swim of 1:08.72 in this morning’s heats,
the University of Calgary based swimmer touched in 1:08.80. Both Doyle and Murphy will have another
opportunity at qualification in tomorrow’s final.
At the British Swimming Disability Championships in Sheffield there were four world qualification times with
Ellen Keane (100Fly), Darragh McDonald (400Free), James Scully (100Free) and Jonathan McGrath (400Free)
all dipping under the required times.
