What is gamification?

What is gamification?
Gamification is about taking the essence of games – fun, play and passion – and
applying it to real-world, non-game situations.
The average game player today is 37 years old, and 42% of game players are
women.
There are different types of motivators and incentives:

Megatrend: gaming
All over the world we have
500 million gamers today
An average WoW game player spends
22 hours on gaming - per week
So far, we spent 5.93 million years
playing World of Warcraft
10.000 hours of gameplay of kids between 5th grade and
high school (in countries with gaming culture)
Malcolm Gladwell ‘10.000 hours rule’: if you spend
more than 10.000 hours on anything before 21 you
will be ‘virtuous’ at it (see ‘Outliers’)
Within one decade we will have
1.5 billion gamers consuming
more than 10 billion hours
gaming time a week
3 billion hours of
online gaming - weekly
Games create collective
intelligence – the WoW
Wiki is the world’s second
Largest (after Wikipedia)
Epic adventures have the potential
to create ‘transformative experience’
The next generation gaming will be
low-energy, wireless, totally online
(cloud sourced)
Games offer the opportunity to
achieve epic wins and realities
Gamers are ‘super-empowered
hopeful individuals’
We are seeing a
mass exodus to
virtual worlds and
online game
environments
…so let’s use the power of gaming to solve real sustainability issues and
learn about the opportunities of systemic changes … let’s create future!
“By 2015, more than 50 per cent of organizations that manage innovation
processes will gamify those processes”
- Gartner
