Team Leader, Tutoring and Mentoring – Pathways to Education™ Program
(Full-Time-35 hours per week)
Unison Health and Community Services is a non-profit, community-based organization that serves
neighbourhoods in North West Toronto. Operating out of five locations, Unison offers core services that include
primary health care, counselling, health promotion, Early Years programs, legal services, harm reduction
programs, housing assistance, adult protective services, Pathways to Education and Diabetes Education Centre.

At this time, Unison is seeking a full-time Team Leader, Tutoring and Mentoring. Reporting to Director,
Pathways to Education, the Team Leader, Tutoring and Mentoring ensures the successful planning,
implementation, evaluation and ongoing development of tutoring and mentoring supports and programs
provided to youth participating in the Pathways to Education Program. The position oversees the work of seven
Program Facilitators, four Site Support Workers, and 150 volunteers while working in concert with other
members of the Pathways team. The position also oversees the development of partnerships and networks
both in and outside the community that support specific academic and social needs of the participating students
and the vision of Pathways. The Team Leader serves as a member of the Unison Management Team to ensure
that the Agency’s programs and services reflect the needs of the community, are in keeping with our strategic
directions, and demonstrate effectiveness.
Additional responsibilities include:
 Conducting performance reviews of supervised staff
 Participate in hiring and ensuring staff training and professional development
 Developing materials and processes for the successful recruitment, screening, training, and ongoing
supervision of volunteer mentors and tutors in conjunction with program partners and staff
 Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the tutoring and mentoring programs
 Secure sites for tutoring and mentoring
 Participation in Unison meetings, teams, and programs as required
 Budget management of site resources
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an understanding of the strengths and capacities of students as well as
barriers and challenges faced by youth in a culturally and linguistically diverse, low-income community. In
addition, an understanding of the general issues affecting the community, first-hand experience with school
guidance and career counselling, employment counselling, knowledge of university, college and related postsecondary options and transitions, and an understanding of anti-oppression concepts and their application.
The successful candidate must be creative, action-oriented and able to operationalise program elements
effectively and efficiently.
Other requirements:
1. Master’s degree in social work, education, youth care, or a combination of education and experience;
2. Successful experience as a tutor or mentor, preferably with high school age youth from diverse
backgrounds;
3. Experience in recruiting, training, supporting and supervising volunteers;
4. Detailed knowledge of the secondary school curriculum, preferably gained through direct experience
with secondary school teachers, administrators and support staff;
5. Knowledge of approaches to providing support to youth with special educational challenges and needs;
6. An understanding of the goals and challenges involved in the development of successful tutoring and
mentoring relationships;
7. Knowledge of, and experience with, small group dynamics and experience in facilitation appropriate to
youth and adults from a variety of cultural backgrounds;
8. Experience in program development and evaluation;
9. An understanding of the Pathways to Education vision and approach;
10. Knowledge of community, educational and social service resources, in particular services for youth;
11. Willingness to work flexible hours in order to meet programming expectations; and
12. 3-5 years’ experience in a community-based setting.
