HARD NOT TO LIKE GAME IN GAMELY
STREET STORY ON TOP IN WINNING COLORS
Speedway Stable=s Hard Not to Like (Hard Spun),
desperate for running room the length of the stretch,
pounced through the slimmest of openings along the
rail in the dying strides to win Monday=s GI Gamely S.
by the barest of margins. The gray mare, purchased for
$1.5-million by Peter Fluor and K.C. Weiner=s
burgeoning Speedway Stables at last year=s Keeneland
November sale,
was sent
postward at 7-2.
Biding her time
racing two-wide
off a modest early
pace through
fractions of
:24.53 and
:48.99, Hard Not
to Like angled to
the inside and
picked up the
Hard Not to Like surges past
running on the far
Fanticola to win Gamely
turn. Searching
Benoit
for a seam
entering the stretch, she waited until pacesetting
Fanticola (Silent Name {Jpn}) shifted slightly outward in
deep stretch and exploded through to score by a head.
AI thought she always looked the winner, but I
thought she was going to be the unluckiest loser of the
day,@ said Lee Vickers, assistant to winning trainer
Christophe Clement. Vickers gave credit for the victory
to a heady ride from Victor Espinoza. AThat was a
brilliant ride, but the man=s on fire and he rode with
confidence, that=s all I can say.@
Of his trip, Espinoza added, AWhen she broke and
crossed the dirt everyone was going a different
direction, so I dropped her all the way down to the rail.
I was going to stay there and if it opened up, it opened.
In the stretch when I saw the rider in front of me
switch his stick to his left hand, I knew that normally a
horse will drift out a little. I knew it was my chance and
that=s how I got through on the inside.@
Hard Not to Like, the lone Grade I winner in the
Gamely field, captured the GI Jenny Wiley S. last April
in her final outing for breeder Garland Williamson=s
Hillsbrook Farms and trainer Michael Matz. After her
date in the Keeneland sales ring last fall, she returned
to finish first in the Jan. 31 GIII Endeavor S., but was
disqualified and placed second. She shipped west off a
third-place effort in the Apr. 11 Jenny Wiley.
Hard Not to Like was the second horse purchased by
Fluor and Weiner, who only days before buying the
gray mare paid $1 million for Leigh Court (Grand Slam)
at the Fasig-Tipton November sale. Cont. p3
Street Story (Street Cry {Ire}) turned back favorite
Spring Included (Include) in deep stretch and then held
the late-closing Heykittykittykitty (Tactical Cat) at bay
to take the GIII Winning
Colors S. by 1 1/2 lengths at
Churchill Downs Monday.
The dark bay filly, winner of
last year=s GIII Victory Ride
S., broke well from her
outside post and settled into
a stalking position while four
Street Story
off the rail. She began to
Reed Palmer
press the pace after a quarter
in :21.90. Spring Included
stuck her head in front at the top of the stretch, but
Street Story was just to her outside and ready to
pounce. Street Story turned back the favorite in the
final sixteenth and held sway over Heykittykittykitty.
AShe always tries hard and today she ran very well,@
said Darren Fleming, assistant to winning trainer Steve
Asmussen.
Winning jockey Florent Geroux added, AWe had a
great trip on the outside. When I rode her at Fair
Grounds she was stuck on the inside and she almost
jumped the fence. She was really claustrophobic on the
inside. I was pretty much sure I could win this stakes. I
had to keep her on the clear as much as possible and it
went great. I had a good enough post to do so and I
took advantage of it. I had the 8-5 favorite next to me
when I squeezed mine just before the quarter pole. I
pretty much knew I had it.@ Cont. p4

TROTTER FATHER PATRICK, BREEDS, WINS,
ALL IN SAME WEEK
by Bill Finley
Earlier this year, T.D. Thornton wrote a story in the
TDN about the superstar trotter Father Patrick doing
double duty--breeding and racing at the same time--a
common practice in European harness racing but not in
the U.S., and virtually unheard of in Thoroughbred
racing.
This week, the
4-year-old
champion trotter
had a particularly
busy week,
winning his 2015
year-debut by two
lengths in
Sunday=s
$150,000 Maxie
Lee at Harrah=s
Philadelphia. He

three times during

AHe is just amazing,@ trainer Jimmy Takter said. AHe
was bred three times this week. I was a little worried
because it was three times and I tried to get (co-owner)
Adam (Bowden) to go down to two, but he had quite a
few mares to cover this week. He doesn=t seem to mind
it. It=s the individual. I know horses that wouldn=t do it
at all. You start breeding them and they lose all interest
in racing. In his case it hasn=t been a negative at all. It
was something I thought of and I told Adam about it
and he thought it was a great idea. All the partners
agreed upon it. So far so good.@
Making the victory even sweeter was the fact that
Father Patrick defeated 2013 Horse of the Year Bee A
Magician. A mare, she had started out this year with
three wins from three starts, all of them against males
and was the betting favorite Sunday.
It was quite a day for horse pulling double duty.
Takter also won the $150,000 Jerry Taylor Invitational
at Harrah=s with a 7-year-old pacer named Great
Vintage. The horse had been retired but when he failed
to attract a sizeable group of mares to be bred to it was
decided to return him to the races. He, like Father
Patrick, bred a mare in the days prior to win Sunday.
AIt=s such a foreign concept that there were questions
about us being out of the box,@ Bowden told Thornton
earlier this year. He bought Father Patrick as a stallion
prospect but then saw no reason not to keep
campaigning him. ATo this point it=s been a huge
success. He=s done a fantastic job in the shed in getting
mares pregnant, has never trained any better, and
seems happy,@ he said.
Could it change minds in the Thoroughbred industry?
Only time will tell.

Stylish on debut when a four-length winner over
seven furlongs at Hoppegarten in September, Karpino
returned with a vengeance when annexing Krefeld=s G3
Dr Busch-Memorial in clear-cut fashion over 8 1/2
furlongs Apr. 26 and stepped up again with this
powerhouse performance. Enjoying the perfect early
trip in second under Oisin Murphy, the bay was allowed
to stride to the front with a quarter-mile remaining and
was soon beyond recall as the over-matched Fanciful
Angel fared best of the overseas duo. AHe is an even
better horse over a longer trip, which is why Oisin rode
just behind the leader so he would not have too much
on his plate in case it was a slowly run race,@ trainer
Andreas Wohler commented. AIt is still a long way to
the G1 Deutsches Derby [at Hamburg July 5] and there
are other good horses in the mix for that, but he is
definitely very talented. We don=t know just now how
good he really is, but he has the potential to be a topclass horse.@

O’BRIEN UNDECIDED ON DERBY NUMBER 1
ROYAL ASCOT POSSIBLE FOR GAILO CHOP
Less than two weeks out from the G1 Epsom Derby,
trainer Aidan O=Brien is unclear as to who his stable
number one will be as he aims for a fourth straight win
in the historic Classic.
O=Brien was non-committal about Gleneagles (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}), who added Saturday=s G1 Irish 2000
Guineas to his English 2000 Guineas score, and he said
G3 Gallinule S. second Giovanni Canaletto (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) could aim for Royal Ascot.
"I thought if he was going to go to Epsom then he
needed to go to Chester,@ O=Brien said of the latter, a
full-brother to O=Brien=s
2013 Derby winner Ruler
of the World (Ire). "It looks
like it might be a bit quick
to go to Epsom. The right
thing might be to go to
Royal Ascot or come back
here for the Irish Derby,
something like that, with a
view to having him next
year."
Of Gleneagles, O=Brien
said, AI'd say the odds are
probably more against him
than with him going.@
There has been
speculation last year=s G1
Prix Marcel Boussac winner
Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
Aidan O’Brien
would be supplemented for
Racing Post
the Derby, and O=Brien
said, AI've only read in the paper about Found. She is
obviously a possible to step up to a mile and a half and
there's other fillies for the Oaks.@
O=Brien pointed to his Listed Lingfield Derby Trial S.
scorer Kilimanjaro (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and G3
Chester Vase winner Hans Holbein (GB) (Montjeu {Ire})
as Derby possibles.
"The Lingfield horse, Kilimanjaro, you'd think he'd
step up, and Hans Holbein is a solid horse who will get
a mile and a half well and probably further. All those
things are there and open; a lot to be discussed in the
next week to 10 days.@
In other Derby news, the G2 Dante S. 1-2-3 Golden
Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling)
and Elm Park (GB) (Phoenix Reach {Ire}) are set to
stretch their legs at Tuesday=s Breakfast With The Stars
at Epsom. They will be joined by G1 Epsom Oaks
hopefuls Star of Seville (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}),
Jazzi Top (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Al Naamah
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
Gailo Chop (Fr) (Deportivo {GB}), who ran Solow (GB)
(Singspiel {Ire}) to 1 1/2 lengths when second in
Sunday=s G1 Prix d=Ispahan, could become trainer
Antoine de Watrigant=s first Royal Ascot starter, with a
possible date in the G1 Prince of Wales=s S. June 17.
De Watrigant said his charge emerged from the race-his first of the season--in good order.
"He is very well,@ the conditioner said of the 4-yearold gelding. AHe traveled back home this morning and
everything is all right. It is possible Gailo Chop will go
to Royal Ascot. It will be good for him. The distance of
the race there is okay for him and I think Ascot is a
good track. All the horses that run there are very good
and Gailo Chop is a good horse. He would be my first
runner at Ascot. For us to go there and for a race like
the Prince of Wales's S. is very exciting."

GUINEAS RUNNER-UP PROBABLE FOR ASCOT
Godolphin=s Devonshire (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}),
third in Sunday=s G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, could be seen
next at Royal Ascot, according to trainer Willie
McCreery.
"She ran a blinder and the better ground seemed to
suit her,@ the conditioner noted. "You couldn't ask for
any more from her, so we're delighted. I haven't had a
chance to speak to the owners yet and we'll wait and
see how she comes out of the race, but we'll probably
be looking at something at Royal Ascot for her."
Devonshire had finished second in both the G3
Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial S. and G3
Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial S. Apr. 12 and
May 10, respectively.
CIRRUS LIKELY TO BYPASS EPSOM
Evergreen galloper Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top
{Ire}), last of four in
Sunday=s G1 Prix d=Ispahan
at Longchamp after breaking
a shoe during the running of
the race, is likely to bypass
a title defense of the G1
Coronation Cup at Epsom
June 6 in favor of the G1
Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud
Cirrus des Aigles
June 28.
Racing Post
"He seems fine this
morning,@ said trainer Corine
Barande-Barbe. AWe put new shoes on him and he is
walking okay. I am disappointed, not in the horse but
disappointed with the problem. Christophe [Soumillon]
said he was flying down to the starting gate and he
was very confident, but he said after half a furlong he
didn't feel right. I think it must have happened just after
the start. Cirrus was very prudent and careful during
the race and it is almost as though he didn't run.@

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 5/26/15 • PAGE 10 of 13 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
Barande-Barbe said ground concerns, and the fact
Cirrus des Aigles pulled up lame after winning last
year=s Coronation Cup, have tempted her to skip that
contest.
"I'm not keen on going back for the Coronation Cup,@
she said. ALast year he had the accident there; he is a
very clever horse and I don't want to bother him. There
is not much rain forecast either, so I don't think he will
go to Epsom, but it is up the owner. I think he will
probably go for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. It is a
Group 1 in France he can run in and he has not won it
before, so it would be nice to do it. Otherwise we have
the [G1] Prince of Wales's S. [at Royal Ascot June 17],
but I think when the ground is quicker he is better
going over the longer distance [mile and a half] at
Saint-Cloud."
Collecting his first win since capturing this same
event two years ago, turf specialist Ordak Dan
revalidated his ticket into North America=s richest turf
race by earning an automatic berth in the GI Breeders=
Cup Turf in this Breeders= Cup "Win and You=re In"
event for a second time with a come from behind
victory. Under a ground-saving rail trip, the dark bay
split horses and took the lead just before midstretch to
win convincingly, snapping runner-up Alma de Acero=s
five-race win streak. Sidelined after winning this event
in 2013, the 6-year-old entered off a fifth-place finish in
the G1 Gran Premio Republica Argentina on dirt at
Palermo after finishing second in the G1 Miguel Alfredo
Martinez de Hoz over 2000 meters over this course in

editions of the race since the brilliant imported mare

YOUNG SIRES POPULAR ON THE GOLD COAST
By Rob Burnet
The second day of the Magic Millions National
Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast Monday carried on in
a similar manner to the first, with strong demand for
lots and, in particular, the progeny of first-season sires.
It was no surprise that the leading filly of the sale-and yesterday=s session-topper--was lot 331, a
daughter of Snitzel (Aus) out of the five-times winning
Dehere mare Fashion Rocks (Aus) out of the draft of
The Old Crossing. There were just three weanlings
offered by the leading sire
in the sale, and with
Snitzel's fee now at
A$88,000, the filly was
out of her box for
multiple inspections
before her time in the
ring.
Bidding commenced at
Session-topping Snitzel filly
A$100,000 and from the
Magic Millions
outset the filly was on
the market, with bids
increasing in A$20,000 increments. At A$220,000 the
bids went to A$10,000, but the price climbed just as
quickly to A$300,000. With one final A$10,000 bid,
John Hutchinson from Scone Bloodstock was able to
sign for the filly on behalf of a client for A$310,000.
"She is a beautiful filly," Hutchinson said. "Probably
the most admired filly of the sale--certainly for us she
was. She's by the gun stallion, she's the first foal of a
good mare and the grandam was a really good mare
and she looked like all the good Snitzel fillies, like
[Group 1 winner] Snitzerland. We're pleased to buy
her.@
It is likely that the filly will be raced and not reoffered as a yearling.
The sale maintained the strong growth of the
weanling market at the Gold Coast over the last three
years, with the sale average of A$60,038 up 37.8%
from last year, which included the Teeley Dispersal. The
2014 average was up 34% from the 2013 sale.
There were 96 fewer lots catalogued this year for
$415,500 less gross receipts of $14,829,500 over last
year's sale gross of $15,245,000. The buyback rate
was up to 20.8% from last year=s 13%, with the
quality of the Teeley Unreserved Dispersal no doubt
influencing that figure.
Young Sires Prove Popular...
Bloodstock agent James Harron had paid A$500,000
for a Medaglia d'Oro colt out of the Wood Nook Farm
Dispersal as the top lot Sunday, and he opened selling
Monday when securing the very first lot through the
ring, lot 216--a colt by Pierro (Aus) out of the Honour
And Glory mare Walk Alone (Aus) out of the draft of
Rothwell Park for A$280,000. This was the third foal
of the stakes winner Walk Alone with both earlier foals,
You'll Never (Aus) (Commands {Aus}) and Coventry
(Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}), winners. You'll Never has an
opportunity to extend his six-win career at Rosehill
Saturday if trainer Chris Waller accepts with him for the
Octagonal H.
It should come as no surprise that Harron was
interested in the Pierro colt, as he purchased that
multiple Group 1-winning sire as a yearling with trainer
Gai Waterhouse.
Waterhouse trained
Pierro, who now
stands at Coolmore
Stud in the Hunter
Valley, for Greg and
Donna Kolivos, and
they will race the colt
signed for by Harron.
Later in the session
there was a run of
James Harron
sales that typified the
Magic Millions
interest in the young
sires on offer. Vinery's
All Too Hard (Aus) was represented by the sale of lot
243, a bay colt out of the three-time winning Ashkalani
(Ire) mare Ashenti (Aus). The colt is a half-brother to
the Group 2 winner Riva De Lago (Aus) (Encosta de
Lago {Aus}), and further back is the G1 Sires' Produce
winner Not Related (Aus) (Family Ties {Aus}).
Henley Park's Marc and Sarah Devcich signed for the
colt through their Devcich Bloodstock, and he will be
presented as a yearling.
The following lot (lot 244) was a Pierro colt out of
the Charge Forward (Aus) mare Assail (Aus), from the
draft of Newgate Farm, and he was signed at
A$260,000 by Magic Millions as agent.
Lot 248 presented another colt by Pierro, out of the
Danehill Dancer (Ire) mare Ballerina Girl (Aus), from the
draft of Coolmore Stud. The colt was signed for by Karl
Brown Bloodstock for A$100,000.

Young Sires Prove Popular (cont. from p11)
The next lot was a colt by Foxwedge (Aus) out of the
Group 3-winning Barathea (Ire) mare Bardego (Aus), out
of the draft of Donnybrook Estates. The colt is the
half-brother to Listed Black Opal S. winner Delago Bolt
(Aus) (Delago Brom {Aus}). Muskoka Farm signed for
the colt at A$155,000.
There was international representation later in the
session when lot 435, a colt by Fastnet Rock (Aus) out
of the South African mare Sweet Sanette (SAf) entered
the ring, as part of the weaning supplementary, from
the draft of Coolmore Stud.
Sweet Sanette, by Jallad, won eight times, including
the G3 Turffontein Sycamore Sprint, and she was third
in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. Her
third dam is the champion 2-year-old filly in South
Africa, Scented Royal (SAf) (Royal Prerogative {SAf}).
Bloodstock agent Mark Pilkington signed for the colt
under the banner of Magic Millions, as agent, at
A$300,000 after bidding from all sides of the ring. The
colt may be kept for racing.
Magic Millions Managing Director was upbeat about
the results of the two-day sale.
"It continued on exactly the way we left off
[Sunday]," he said. "We're sitting on an average just
over A$60,000, which is just sensational. The gross is
over $14.8 million, but what is an interesting statistics
is that the median price is about the same as the
average price two years ago--so that is how far this
sale has moved and it sits right up there with the best
weanling sales in the world."
Cox added, "There was great competition from all
parts of the world. Investors from South Africa, Ireland,
America, New Zealand and of course domestically.
We're all very happy with it."

SHAMAL WIND TRIALS FOR ROYAL ASCOT
G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Shamal Wind (Aus) (Dubawi
{Ire}) put in her final major preparation before departing
Australia for Royal Ascot when finishing second in an
800-meter barrier trial at Cranbourne Monday. Trainer
Robert Smerdon told Racing and Sports he was Areally
happy@ with the 5-year-old=s trial.
"It was what we
wanted, just a nice gallop
and everything is coming
together,@ Smerdon said.
"[Rider Damien Oliver]
wanted to give her a more
testing hit-out in the
straight, but he had no real
galloping room getting up
behind those horses so he
Shamal Wind’s trainer, Robert said he kept her going
Smerdon
through the line to make
Racing and Sports
sure she had a decent
gallop. We were pretty
pleased with that. It was good."
Jockey Ryan Moore is set to ride Shamal Wind in the
G1 King=s Stand S. on the opening day of the meeting
June 16, but Oliver could get the call if Moore is
required for a Ballydoyle runner. Oliver will be at the
meeting to ride the Gai Waterhouse-trained Wandjina
(Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S.

Memorial Day Weekend Sets Record at Monmouth:
A record 60,114 fans attended the races at
Monmouth Park over the Memorial Day weekend. The
track=s holiday weekend featured the popular food truck
festival.
AThe numbers we saw this weekend are indicative of
the strength of our racing product and fan-friendly
entertainment destination that we continue to build at
Monmouth Park,@ commented Dennis Drazin, advisor to
Darby Development LLC, operators of the Oceanport
racetrack.
Attendance figures for the three days of racing from
Saturday through Monday increased 37.4% from a year
ago. The total handle for the three days was
$15,008,303--a 22.4% increase over last year, as the
on-track handle came in at $2,264,176, a 15.5% gain.
Through the first three weeks of racing, attendance is
up 23.3%, with on-track and total handle both showing
double digit gains.
AShould this meet=s early successes continue, we will
reevaluate some projects that have been placed on hold
as well as look at some infrastructure improvements to
the facility,@ Drazin said. AFor us this is really just the
beginning. To have come so far in such a short time is
a testament to the dedication of our most valued
resource, our employees. But even more importantly,
it=s our fans, and that=s who we will continue to work
for to deliver world-class Thoroughbred racing at a
facility that is second to none.@

BOURBON WARFARE (f, 4, Colonel John--Las Malvinas,
by Lord at War {Arg}) graduated at second asking over
6 1/2 furlongs here Nov. 22 and followed with a pair of
third-place runs over off tracks at Oaklawn Park
Jan. 22 and Feb. 21. An authoritative winner going
1 1/16 miles over a fast surface there Apr. 2, she was
subsequently transferred from trainer Kellyn Gorder to
her current barn. Tabbed as the 2-1 second choice in
this spot, the filly raced just off the pacesetters in the
three path behind a half-mile over the off going in
:45.62. Angled to the four path turning for home she
collared Awesome Jill (Pioneerof the Nile) in mid-stretch
and muscled clear to post a 4 3/4-length victory over
that rival. The winner sold for $120,000 as a KEENOV
weanling and later RNA=d for $190,000 as a FTSAUG
yearling. Her third dam is GISW Broom Dance (Dance

ALL STAR RED (c, 3, Five Star Day--My Sweet

$25,000 taggers at Tampa Mar. 14 and tallied another
win in an allowance here Apr. 30. Let go at 8-1, All
Star Red was away well from the outside post and
stalked the pace from about three paths off the rail. He
crept into contention after the first quarter and bid for
the lead at the top of the stretch, but was rebuffed. All
Star Red kept grinding away, though, and was able to
wear down Allidoisdreamofyou (Street Sense) in the
waning strides to win by a head. The winner is a fullsibling to Sweet Cassiopeia, MSW & GSP, $653,407.

{Ire} {MGSW-US, MSW-Eng & GSP-Fr, $444,144}, by
Caerleon), ninth on debut over the Tampa Bay lawn
Mar. 21, was claimed from Godolphin and trainer Eoin
Harty for $20,000 out of a third-place effort over the
main track at Keeneland Apr. 22. Sent off at 6-1 in his
first start for the new connections, the bay gelding was
away slowly and angled to the rail while trailing the
field early. Well back in last through a half in :49.18,
Out of Context began to systematically pick off foes
down the backstretch and snuck through an opening
along the rail into the stretch. He exchanged bumps as
he moved through a narrow opening at the top of the
lane, but ran on determinedly to outfinish Langdarma
(Candy Ride {Arg}) for a one-length victory. The winner
is a half-brother to Criticism (Machiavellian, MGSW &

Jessica=s Star reaffirmed his affinity for Prairie
Meadows with his third stakes tally in as many tries
over the local strip. The dark bay finished in the exacta
in his first seven lifetime starts, including a pair of wins
in the Prairie Mile S. last May and the GIII Iowa Derby in
June. He wrapped up his sophomore campaign with a
fifth-place effort in the GII Super Derby over nine
furlongs at Louisiana Downs Sept. 6 and was sent to
the sidelines for seven months following that effort.
Fourth in Keeneland=s GII Commonwealth S. over seven
panels Apr. 4, he recently was a dull fifth in a one-mile
optional claimer at Churchill Downs May 2. Tabbed as
the slight favorite in this evenly matched field, Jessica=s
Star stalked Den=s Legacy (Medaglia d=Oro) through a
half-mile in :48.95 and moved to the front departing the
far turn. Asked for his all in the stretch, the gelding
held off a trio of late-running rivals in a comfortable
score. Click for the brisnet.com chart or VIDEO,

closer order heading into the turn and swung out

CURLIN'S FOX (f, 3, Curlin--Foxysox (GB) {MGSW &

debut score over course-and-distance Feb. 1, earning
>TDN Rising Star= status following that effort. Second
next out in the grassy one-mile China Doll S. as the
even-money favorite, she switched to the main track
and finished a well-beaten fourth behind Stellar Wind
(Curlin) in the GI Santa Anita Oaks over 1 1/16 miles
here Apr. 4. Given a brief freshening ahead of this
return to the turf, the chestnut was sent postward as
the 3-1 second choice in this spot. Curlin=s Fox broke
sharply to press the pace along the inside and punched
through to gain a narrow lead through a half-mile in
:44.65. Cornering into the lane with plenty of gas left

IRON FIST (c, 3, Tapit--Successful Outlook {GSW,
$110,720}, by Orientate) started his career in some
very productive special weight races. The colt was
fourth in his debut at Del Mar July 19 behind
subsequent GII San Vicente S. winner Lord Nelson
(Pulpit) and GII Sham S. victor Calculator (In
Summation). In his second start there Aug. 9, he was
second behind Om (Munnings) and finished in front of
GI Santa Anita Derby runner-up One Lucky Dane
(Lookin at Lucky), the aforementioned Calculator,
GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. winner
American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and GI Breeders=
Cup Juvenile Turf third Daddy DT (Scat Daddy). Iron
Fist wrapped up his juvenile season when he completed
the GI Del Mar Futurity trifecta behind American
Pharoah and Calculator Sept. 3. He began his
sophomore season finishing second by a half-length
trying the dirt here May 2 and was supported as the 45 pick for this second go over the track. The Regis
Racing and Stonestreet Stable colorbearer was away
sharply from the outside post and was hung four wide
around the first turn. Iron Fist pressed the leader from
the two path, then moved to take sole command down
the backstretch. Pressed on the turn, the gray
temporarily lost the lead to Rosicky (Flatter) on the
bend, but battled back gamely to take a slight
advantage in the stretch to hit the wire a half-length in
front. Iron Fist, the fourth foal out of GIII Tempted S.
winner Successful Outlook, is a half-sibling to GI Test
S. winner Sweet Lulu (Mr. Greeley, $693,600), and
sold for $1,550,000 as a Keeneland September

when third going one mile over the lawn at Golden Gate

21-1 outsider was jostled at the break and fell back to
last. She inched closer after a half in :48.56 and
shadowed the wide move of favored Scandal (Blame)
into the stretch, closing willingly while unable to catch

couple of spots soon after halfway. Gaining ground
inside the two pole, the 14-1 chance edged across to
the rail when sent to the front approaching the final
eighth and drew off late under urging to score by three
lengths from Arlecchino=s Rock (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar

Shimrano returned to be second to the subsequent G3

the already formidable reputation of that rival further
here. Sent to the front soon after the start, the dark

and, once brought to the stand=s rail in early stretch,
never looked like being reeled in.
