MAY WELLNESS CALENDAR May 1, 2016 Mental Health Kickoff Event at Hernder Estate Wines On Sunday, May 1st, the Family Mental Health Support Network of Niagara is holding the official kickoff event for Mental Health Week 2016 at Hernder Estate Wines. Join for Sunday brunch, live Dixieland Jazz, fine cigars and a silent auction. All proceeds go directly to programming so we hope you’ll support this worthy cause. If you look among your friends and neighbours, and into the student community, chances are you know one family that’s benefited from the free services of the Family Mental Health Support Network of Niagara. The organization provides free educational workshops and group support to families providing care to someone with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or a mood or anxiety disorder. I’m sure you can imagine the stress this puts on a family that has no prior experience with mental illness. May 1-7, 2016 Mental Health Week Events at Brock University Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) Mental Health Week is an annual national event that takes place during the first week in May to encourage people from all walks of life to learn, talk, reflect and engage with others on all issues relating to mental health. May 2, 2016 9:00 – 4:00 pm MCA 323 Art Activity Drop In Come & explore the therapeutic benefits of colouring! Adult colouring is one of the latest strategies for coping with stress & anxiety. May 3, 2016 12:30 – 1:30 pm Bob Davis Gym Yoga for Everyone Drop in and join us in the gym for the basics of Yoga. If you have your own yoga mat, please feel free to bring it along with you. Family Support Network of Niagara Mental Health Week MAY WELLNESS CALENDAR May 5, 2016 12-1 pm Shepell Workshop: Creating Balance in Your Life In today’s environment of competing demands, relentless commitments, and a consistent feeling of shortage of time, balance often does not come easily or naturally. A conscious effort, deep commitment, and clear priorities are required to create and protect one’s sense of balance. This session will help participants explore how their current choices impact their work-life satisfaction and help them develop strategies to achieve a greater balance in life. May 6, 2016 11:15 – 1:00 pm Wear green, enjoy a walk followed by a BBQ lunch all in support of Mental Health! Join us at 11:15 to enjoy a walk, outside, weather permitting. We will meet in the lobby of the Schmon tower and enjoy a 30 minute walk ending in Jubilee Court for a BBQ to support the Canadian Mental Health Association – Niagara in their mental health initiatives. Please wear green in support of Mental Health Awareness and reducing the stigma. May 3, 2016 June 25, 2016 Grapes of Wrath Training Launch Join the Brock Team and train for the Grapes of Wrath event happening on June 25, 2016. Training will occur on Tuesdays at 12:00 pm, Thursdays at 5:00 pm and Saturdays at 10:00 am, starting on May 3, 2016 and running for 8 weeks. Drop in and see what it is all about. Grapes of Wrath isn't your average charity run. This 5K obstacle and mud run demands endurance to trek through hills and valleys, splash through winding streams, courage to overcome more than 20 uncompromising obstacles, and a complete lack of shame to sludge through dirt and mud all in the name of a good cause. Grapes of Wrath is a roller coaster ride of fun, excitement, camaraderie and physical and mental toughness that is anything but ordinary. The event supports the Canadian Cancer Society's local Wheels of Hope transportation program that helps cancer patients get to their life-saving cancer treatment appointments. Niagara's volunteer drivers logged over 1 million km. last year, helping more than 900 local cancer patients. In ten years, over $5.554 million will have been given back to the Niagara community. As a participant or donor, the results of your efforts can be seen in our Niagara region every day.
