Y1 Autumn newsletter - Fazakerley Primary School Liverpool

DATE: 8/01/16
Dear Parents and Carers,
We welcome the children back to school for the second term of the year and hope you
had a lovely Christmas with your family. We would like to thank you for all the lovely
treats we received for Christmas. The children have settled well in their first week back
and have worked hard. We hope to see your child in school each day
In Numeracy the children will be taking part in multiplication activities. The children will
learn how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. It would really help if the children could practise
this at home too! They will also learn how to find halve of a number and shape and also a
quarter. In basic skills the children will continue to count and recognise numbers to 100.
We will count forwards and backwards and revisit addition and subtraction problems.
There are lots of ICT games on Primary resources that will help the children.
This term the children will be writing recounts about Christmas. The children are beginning
to use time connectives in their writing- First, Next, Then, After that, Finally etc. The
children will also be listening to tradition tales and thinking of exciting adjectives to
describe different characters. They will also follow and write sets of instructions. During
writing activities we concentrate on sentence structure. The children must use a capital
letter, finger space and a full stop to create a golden sentence!
We encourage the children to use their phonic knowledge to read and write unfamiliar
words.
The science themes this term will be Materials and Seasonal change.
They will continue to explore a range of materials and will develop their
scientfiic skills by participating in lots of fun experiments! As part of
the experiments children will begin to develop their abilities to predict
what will happen verbally, make observations and record results.
During their Computing lessons the children will practise logging on and off.
They will use the mouse to move and place items accurately on a screen, eg
dressing teddy, creating monsters and designing a fantasy picture from a
traditional tale. The children will also play directional games to get from
one place to another. We will also use the I pads during our Maths and
English lessons to play fun ICT games!

For topic work this term children will learn about Toys in History . They will
talk about their favourite toys and look at toys they played with as a baby. We
will also identify Victorian toys and learn about Queen Victoria and her family.
Children will be given the opportunity to play with old toys too. They will talk
about what they are made of and this will link to our Science and Art topic Materials. In Geography the children will be learning about changes in the
weather. We will also be learning about how we keep ourselves healthy. The
children will continue to answer the register in French and tell us what they
are having for lunch.
