Why God Doesn’t Always Choose To Heal
In order to understand why sometimes God doesn’t allow someone to be healed of a sickness or disease
when we pray, we need to understand some important things about God, this world, and ourselves.
These things are the very building blocks of our faith in Him.
First, we need to believe that God is sovereign. This means that He is all-knowing. He knows all things
from the beginning to the very end. Nothing takes Him by surprise because He has always known what
was going to happen. God knew that His beautiful creation would be affected by sin. Back at the
beginning of time Adam and Eve made a terrible choice and the earth and everyone who has ever lived
after them has suffered the consequences. It was at this time that sickness, disease, and death came
into the world. It was not God’s original purpose for His creation, but it was a consequence of sin. God
knew this would happen and had a plan in place to bring His creation back into wholeness and
relationship with Him, which is why He sent His son, Jesus.
Second, it is important that we have faith that God is always good and filled with love and compassion
for us. It was out of His heart of love for the world that He sent Jesus. The work that Jesus accomplished
through His death and resurrection was for the ultimate healing of both our physical bodies and our
spirits. The Bible says that if we believe in Jesus we will never perish but have eternal life in a perfect
place called heaven where there is no more sin, pain or suffering. If we accept Jesus as our Lord and
Savior while we are here on earth, after our physical bodies die, our spirits continue on to have eternal
life with God. Truly understanding this fact brings great hope and comfort when we are suffering the
consequences of sin in the world.
God’s word tells us that we are healed by Jesus’ stripes. We are also encouraged to pray for healing.
Sometimes God allows people to be healed while on this earth, either through a miracle or the help of
doctors and medicine. But sometimes God does not choose to heal, even if we pray in faith believing
God will heal. Because He is sovereign He knows which plan is best. This leaves us asking why God allows
someone we love to suffer and die if He is so good and loving. But, if you think about it, He does answer
that prayer when He chooses to take someone out of this sinful world, through death, and brings them
into His presence in heaven. Physical death can sometimes be God’s demonstration of mercy and love.
God’s word says that in all things He will work for the good of those who love him, who have been called
according to his purpose.
But, those who are left behind to suffer the loss of that loved one may not see it as a good thing. We
were never promised a life without pain and suffering as a believer. In fact, Jesus said that it’s a
guarantee that we will have pain and suffering as long as we are in this world. Even Jesus suffered here
on earth. God allows suffering in the lives of those He loves with a promise that He will never leave us or
turn away from us. He also accomplishes His purpose through suffering, which is that we would draw
near to Him in the hard times and depend upon Him and not ourselves. Our faith in Him can grow big
during these times and faith glorifies God. Having faith in difficult times is a good thing. God takes
pleasure in our faith. Even when things don’t turn out the way we think they should we need to
continue to have faith that God is sovereign, good, and filled with love and compassion for us. Then,
when hard things happen and we don’t understand why, we have a solid foundation upon which we can
stand.
