The Longhorn Show: A Unique Addition to the
Nebraska State Fair
By Kelli Bowlin
On the morning of August 30th, there was quite a show going on in the Five
Points Bank Arena. Exhibitors lined up with their colorful and unique Longhorn
cattle.
This show premiered some world class Longhorns, who were judged based on
their hide, their horns, muscle definition, and structural correctness.
“There’s not a show quite like it, it really is a unique addition to the fair,” said
Dixie Hoffman, Beef Cattle Secretary. This year, around 120 head of Longhorn
cattle were entered into the show. Most of the exhibitors were Nebraska natives,
but the states Wyoming and Colorado were also represented at the show.
“Longhorn cattle are considered to be the original breed of cattle. They’re sturdy,
resilient, and they make good beef. So it’s always good to see them exhibited at
the state fair to show off the quality of Nebraska’s Longhorns,” said Bob Mills,
Beef Cattle Superintendent.
The Nebraska State Fair will continue until September 7, 2015. For more
information, results, and live video streaming of shows visit www.statefair.org.
