How to Use Digital Media Library & your Kindle
to read library e-books
You first need to have an Amazon account. You will also need your library card number and PIN.
Step by Step
1. On a desktop computer, go to www.pekinpubliclibrary.org and select the “Enjoy
e-books” link on the left. This will take you to the Alliance Digital Media Library.
2. Click Sign In in the upper right hand corner. Choose Pekin Public Library from the list,
and then enter your library card number (beginning with D) and PIN.
3. Search for an e-book title you want to read. Click on the title and choose Borrow.
4. The Borrow button changes to Go to Loans. Click the button
5. Beside the book you are downloading, click Choose a Format; choose Kindle.
6. You will go to Amazon’s website. Choose Get Library Book (on the right) and if you are
not already logged in, you will be prompted to enter your Amazon account information.
7. Make sure the “deliver to” field is set to your Kindle, and then click Continue. (If you
were already logged into Wi-Fi and your Amazon account, there will be no “Continue”
button. Instead, you will receive a message saying “Thanks”. The book will already be
downloaded for your device.)
8. An active Wi-Fi connection is required for wireless delivery of library e-books to a Kindle
device – this is not the same as a Kindle’s 3G connection. If you cannot browse the
internet on your Kindle, you will need to transfer your book via USB. Plug your Kindle
into your computer with the USB cord; wait for the device to be recognized; and click
the “Download Now” button. Instructions will follow.
9. Once the file downloads, your book will load onto your Kindle. (Some devices may
require you to click on the book title and drag it to the Kindle pop-up screen, into the
documents folder.)
To return your book early: Login at Amazon.com and go to “Manage Your Content and
Devices” Find the book you want to return, choose Actions, and then choose Return This Book.

Helpful Hints for Using the Pekin Public Library’s Digital E-book Collection
How to Use the Digital Media Library
Go to www.pekinpubliclibrary.org in your web browser, and then click on the “Enjoy eBooks” link on
the left. This takes you to Alliance Digital Media Library. Login (upper right corner) choosing Pekin
Public Library from the list and entering your library card number and PIN. Using the Search feature
before you login will give you inaccurate results.
Finding Something to Read
Books shown on the first screen are those chosen by Librarians to highlight. Scroll to see categories;
categories will change from time to time. Within each category, you can choose See All or scroll from
right to left to see more. If you would like to search for specific items or types of items, you have many
choices. (1)QUICK SEARCH - Start your search by typing author name or book title by the magnifying
glass OR (2) ADVANCED SEARCH – Click the search bar, then click Advanced Search to limit by subject,
availability, language, etc. OR (3) BY COLLECTION – To look at new items, most popular titles, or the
entire list of what is currently available, click Collections under the library icon in the upper left and
choose the collection you want OR (4) BY SUBJECT LIST - Click Subjects under the library icon in the
upper left and choose a subject from Antiques to Romance. Once your subject list comes up, you can
reduce the number of items by many choices on the left.
Visual clues
On the book cover, the top row is green if the item is Available now, white if you must be placed on a
Wait List for books that are out and for books not yet released, (those show as Coming Soon.) At the
bottom of the book cover, the format symbol (book, headphones) shows what type of item (audiobook
or eBook) you are selecting. The White Circle with the dots lets you read a sample, or view details
(much like reading the inside cover of a physical book) to help you decide if you want the item.
