GUIDE INFORMATION
As a guide, you are expected to be a proficient turkey hunter and caller, with knowledge of the land and
tactics to provide a fun, exciting experience for your hunter. We will do our best to pair you with a hunter
that shares your abilities and hunting style. Your main objective is to provide an opportunity for your
hunter to take a bird, but you can also hunt if you wish. Prizes will be awarded if your team scores highest
for both birds. We know not all outings are successful, but we ask for your best effort in making this hunt
an enjoyable adventure. Please remember to conduct yourself in a professional manner as you are
representing the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation.
You are invited to the Guides Dinner two weeks before the event to obtain any information you need to
plan your location and hunt. You will be teamed up with your hunter and receive their contact information
as far in advance as possible. Like the hunters, you will check in and register at Liberty Hall in The
Factory at Franklin, TN on Friday, March 31, and receive your credentials. There you will meet your
hunter and get better acquainted. Also, you will receive your premium gift bag and you and a guest are
invited to the Evening Social Event on Friday and the Banquet on Saturday with a great dinner, open bar
and auctions.
We thank you for your time and effort in volunteering.
* Please see Itinerary for event times.

TOP GUN SCORING RULES
All birds must be legally harvested wild turkeys taken in the spirit of fair chase and in
accordance with applicable wildlife laws for the state of Tennessee.
You may use more than One Shot to harvest your bird with no deduction to your score.
The scoring method will be the formula of the The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF).
Each bird will be scored by a TWRA officer at the designated scoring site for the One Shot
event. Once the offices scores a bird, that score is final.
All birds must be at the designated scoring site by 3:00 PM.
There are three variables in scoring a wild turkey. Weight, beard length, and spur length.
Step 1:
Weigh your bird in pounds and ounces and convert ounces to decimal form.
Step 2:
Measure each spur. Spurs must be measured along the outside center, from the point at which
the spur protrudes from the scaled leg skin to the tip of the spur. Add both spur measurements
and multiply the combined length of the spurs by 10. This is the number of points you receive for
the turkey’s spurs.
Step 3:
Measure the beard length (a beard must be measured from the center point of the protrusion of
the skin to the tip) and convert it to decimal form.
Next, multiply the beard length figure by 2; this is the number of points you receive for the beard
length. If you have an atypical bird (multiple beards), measure each beard, convert them to a
decimal number, then add those figures together and multiply by two. This is the number of
points you receive for your turkey’s beards.
Step 4:
Add together the weight, the points for spurs and points for beard(s): This is the score you
receive for your turkey.
* Do not field dress your bird. The weight is part of your score.
