RE:
SSB 7 Student Election Commissioner Appointment
Date: November 18, 2014
Senators,
The Student Election Commissioner oversees the University of Iowa Student Government
elections. The regulations and governance procedures for the position and the election can
be found in the UISG Elections Code, which was updated in the fall of 2013. Over the past
three weeks, President Bartoski, Vice President Ding, and executives have worked with the
nominations committee to find a suitable candidate to serve as the SEC. We believe we were
fortunate enough to find an optimal one. Eric Welter has served on the Tippie
Undergraduate Judicial Board, is familiar with student government procedures through his
extensive involvement in student organizations on campus, and, most importantly, would act
as an impartial coordinator for the student elections process.
In short:
1. The nominations committee appoints Eric Welter as Student Elections
Commissioner
We recommend the following:
1. Approve the appointment of Eric Welter as Student Elections Commissioner

RE:
Formation of the Veterans Committee
Date:
November 18, 2014
Senators,
We have drafted legislation which would create the “Veterans Committee.” This committee, upon approval,
will be an ad hoc committee.
The reason behind the formation of this committee is extensive. One of the biggest problems is currently
veterans have no voice or representation in UISG. There is no group dedicated to them that is run by the
student body, people who are the peers and colleagues of these men and women. The “Veterans
Committee” will give veterans across campus genuine representation in their student government.
A major conflict our veterans face when they come back from wars in places, such as Iraq and Afghanistan,
is their inability to enter college and properly integrate into student life. Many feel like they do not belong,
and lack the resources they need to succeed. This committee will supplement this serious need at our
university.
Some of the goals of this committee include ensuring and providing a welcoming and inclusive
environment to veterans and their families, educate faculty, staff, and the community on advantages and
opportunities of bringing veterans into the university environment, and give veterans the resources they
need to succeed or guide them to any assistance they require.
Extra Notes:
 The effort has already begun at the University with the release of the Veterans Task Force Report
 In conjunction with the state of Iowa’s recent efforts to become more veteran-friendly and
encourage veterans to come and stay in Iowa
 The need for this committee is overdue and will enhance the image of UISG among many groups,
especially veteran’s organizations
