COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY INTRAMURAL SPORTS KICKBALL LEAGUE RULES ALL CSU IM SPORTS PARTICIPANTS AND SPECTATORS ARE EXPECTED TO ADHERE TO THE IM SPORTS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES I. ELIGIBILITY – WHO CAN PLAY? a. FULL-TIME CSU STUDENTS (6 or more credits and have paid the Rec Activity Fee as part of their semester tuition) b. PART-TIME CSU STUDENTS who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play c. FACULTY/STAFF who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play d. SPOUSES who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST SHOW THEIR CSU PHOTO ID IN ORDER TO PLAY EVERY MATCH. NO CSU PHOTO ID = NO PLAY. NO EXCEPTIONS. II. LEAGUE RULES: a. Teams will play a 4-week regular season – 1 game each week – and then teams finishing in the top half of each league (who have at least a 2.0 sportsmanship rating average) will advance to the single-elimination playoffs. Once in playoffs, teams are required to maintain a 2.0 sportsmanship rating in order to advance to any succeeding round. b. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST SHOW THEIR CSU PHOTO ID IN ORDER TO PLAY EVERY GAME. NO CSU PHOTO ID = NO PLAY. NO EXCEPTIONS. c. FORFEITS: Game time listed on the schedule is forfeit time, and teams must be checked in and ready to play at their scheduled game time. If, at game time, one team doesn’t have the minimum number of players needed to start the game checked in and ready to play, the captain of the team that is ready to play has the following options. i. Take the win by forfeit, OR ii. Allow 5 extra minutes for the opposing team to field a minimum required line-up and then start the game. NOTE: If this option is chosen, the result of the contest will stand. NOTE: If a team forfeits two games, they are removed from the rest of the league. Please do your best to field an eligible team for each game. d. Location of Games: All games will be played in the CSU Indoor Practice Facility. Entrance will be granted no earlier than 15 minutes before a team’s scheduled game time. III. GAME RULES: Games will be governed by ASA Softball Rules, with exceptions/modifications/highlights listed below. a. LINE-UP, KICKING ORDER, and SUBS: i. This league is “Equal Opportunity,” meaning any combination of male and female players can be used to make a line-up. ii. Maximum of 16 players on team roster. iii. Maximum of 8 players on field on defense. iv. Minimum of 5 players required to start or play a game. v. Team captains are responsible for indicating the kicking order on the score sheet to the umpire before the game. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. vi. Teams may kick all 16 roster players if they wish. Late-arriving players can be added to the bottom of the kicking order by checking in with the IM staff, and can take the field immediately on defense after doing so. vii. Players may sub in and out on defense at any time without notifying the umpire. GAME LENGTH – 7 innings or 55 minutes. No new inning can begin after the time limit expires if one team is ahead. Game time will be kept by the umpire. i. EXTRA INNINGS/TIME LIMIT EXPIRES – If the game is tied at the end of 7 innings or at the end of a full inning with the time limit expired, each new half inning will start with 1 out and the kicker due last in that inning starting at 2nd base. MERCY RULE – There is no mercy rule for IM Kickball. COIN TOSS – The captain winning the coin toss will choose home or visiting team. KICKING – The offensive team will supply the pitcher, who will roll the ball from the pitcher’s plate to home plate. i. An at-bat consists of a maximum of 2 pitches. If the kicker does not put the ball into play on the second pitch, they are out. ii. The pitcher must stay out of the way and may not interfere with the kicked ball, even unintentionally. PENALTY: Ball is dead, kicker is out, and all runners are returned to the bases occupied before the pitch. KICKER IS OUT if: i. They fail to kick the ball fair in 2 pitches. (Foul balls, missed pitches, and pitches not kicked at all count toward the 2 allotted pitches.) ii. The pitcher interferes with the kicked ball. iii. Kicked ball is caught in fair or foul territory before touching the ground or a wall or obstacle. iv. The kicker “bunts” the ball into fair territory. ALL KICKS MUST BE FULL-STRENGTH. NOTE: If a kicked ball that is not touched by the defense does not completely cross the base line between 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd bases, the kicker is out, and all runners are returned to the base they were on before the kick. RUNNER IS OUT if: i. They are struck AT OR BELOW THE SHOULDERS by a thrown or bounced or kicked ball while not in contact with a base. (If a runner ducks their head below where it would be at normal height and is struck in the head, they are out.) NOTE: A runner’s hair and clothing are considered part of their body. ii. They are struck by a kicked ball while NOT in contact with a base. RESULT: Ball is dead, runner is out, kicker is awarded 1st base, and other runners advance only if forced. iii. They are tagged with the ball while not in contact with a base. iv. They are not in contact with their base until the ball contacts the kicker’s foot. THERE IS NO LEADING OFF OR STEALING. RESULT: Ball is dead, runner is out, and the pitch is retaken. RUNNER IS NOT OUT if: i. They are struck in the head by a thrown or bounced ball (and were not ducking their head at the time of contact). RESULT: Ball is dead and all runners are awarded one base from the last legally touched. ii. They are struck by a ball while legally overrunning 1st base. i. SLIDING is allowed into all bases. j. Blocking bases without possession of the ball is not allowed. PENALTY: OBSTRUCTION k. Running through or physically interfering with fielders is not allowed. PENALTY: RUNNER IS OUT & POSSIBLE EJECTION l. There will be no infield fly rule. m. STOPPING PLAY: Play stops when the ball is controlled in the infield by a defensive player, all baserunning has stopped, and the umpire declares “TIME.” n. INJURED RUNNER – If an injury to a runner prevents him/her from continuing to run the bases, a substitute runner will be permitted. The player who made the last out on offense will be the new runner. o. The umpires will explain dead ball areas before the game to both teams. p. UNSPORTING OUT – The umpires can assess an out for unsporting behavior at any time during the game – both when a team is on offense or defense. LIVE BALL PENALTY: If incident occurs while ball is LIVE – ball remains in play, unsporting out will be assessed after all play is stopped, and “TIME” is called by umpire. DEAD BALL PENALTY: If incident occurs while ball is DEAD – unsporting out will be assessed immediately, unless it is after 3rd out of a team’s at-bat, in which case the out will CARRY OVER to the team’s next at-bat. NOTE: The unsportsmanlike out is assessed to the offending TEAM, and NOT a specific player. Unsporting outs DO CARRY OVER from defense to offense. IV. EQUIPMENT: a. JEWELRY may be worn by players seeing that it does not hang far from the body (i.e. necklace, hoop earrings, etc.) b. JERSEYS – Shirts must be worn by all players. Teams’ shirts/jerseys do not need to match or have numbers. c. NO METAL CLEATS – All players must wear athletic, closed-toed shoes. Rubber and plastic cleats are allowed. – NO METAL TIP CLEATS OR SPIKES ALLOWED. d. GAME BALL – Campus Rec will provide the game ball and warm-up balls. PENALTY FOR ILLEGAL EQUIPMENT: Batter or runner will be declared out. V. WEATHER UPDATES: In cases of inclement weather, intramural staff may have to cancel contests. DO NOT ASSUME GAMES WILL BE CANCELLED. It is the captain’s responsibility to call the IM office at (970) 491-6671 no more than one hour prior to the contest in question for up-to-date information regarding whether or not games have been called off.
