BASINGSTOKE BRIDGE CLUB NEWSLETTER
Issue 229 February 2013
Val Chambers
There will be a service to celebrate the life of Val at the Church of Christ the King, on
Thursday 31st January at 11.00 am.
The Church is situated next to Asda in Brighton Hill.
Parking is available in the Gillies/ Asda car park
The Church will handle any donations which will go to the Cancer Research UK.
Frank Sanjana
I am very sad to report that Frank passed away in St. Michael’s Hospice on Friday 25th
January after a long illness. Frank wanted a quiet funeral with nobody attending.
County success
Congratulations to Steve and Tracey who won the County Candlesticks Swiss Pairs.
Club success
Congratulations to Bill and Christel, winners of this year’s Junior Pairs. Their photo is on
the web site, as is a photo of our Candlesticks winners.
NICKO news
Congratulations to Christine and Richard, John and Brian who beat a strong team from
Christchurch in Round 2 of this national inter-club knock out competition. Two
Basingstoke teams have therefore reached Round 3: Steve, Tracey, Keith and I will be
playing a team from Hedge End and Richard’s team will play a team from Burnham.
February events
The Pottage Qualifier is on Friday 8th Feb. Please enter in advance to ensure being
able to play on the night, even if you do not wish to take part in the competition but just
want to play as usual. All players who achieve 50% or more will be eligible for the semi
final at Romsey on 24th February. The final will be played here at Basingstoke on 21st
April.
Teams of four this month is Monday 11th. This is later than usual because of the IBM
charity simultaneous pairs on Monday 4th. Please enter teams on the board or on the
web site, and do try the web site facility or let me know if you need team mates.
The third round of the “Six Partners” will be on Monday 18th. (Please note this is a
correction to the date in the calendar published last month.) The fourth round of the
individual will be on Monday 25th.
Competition for player / partnership of the year
These are two new competitions which have been introduced this year. Click on
“competitions” on the web site menu, and then “player of the year” or “partnership of the
year” in separate windows, to see the respective leader boards to date. An individual has
to have played at least 8 times and a partnership at least 5 times on Mondays or Fridays to
be quoted. Both competitions run from 1st December 2012 to the AGM next November.
Many thanks again to David for his contribution below.
