Maryland Business Roundtable for Education
Mid-Year Report 2011
Moving Maryland from national leader to world class
in education, innovation, and workforce quality
As MBRT prepares to begin a new decade and launch a new three-year strategic plan, a stronger focus on STEM
education and careers will be a key element.
While our mission remains the same, our focus and impact are taking new shape. High credibility/visibility, strong
partnerships and corporate support, new technologies, strategic solutions, impressive results, and broader
funding have propelled our efforts to a higher level.
Strengthening Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math (STEM) Education


Through Race to the Top funding, and in partnership with the Governor and Maryland State Department of
Education, MBRT is developing the State’s STEM Innovation Network -- STEMnet.

A Teacher Hub and a Student Hub are being created, with the first components – STEM Specialists in the
Classroom and STEM Career Exploration – being launched this fall, with initial focus on the biosciences.

With significant support from Northrop Grumman, IBM, AT&T, and MSDE, we have built the online platform
on which STEMnet will run, conducted focus groups and surveys to assess needs of teachers and students,
recruited and trained science specialists to support instruction and motivate students to pursue STEM careers,
and designed systems that will coordinate the connections between teachers and scientists.

Helping Middle and High School Students
Become College/Career Ready
mbrt.org/speak

During the 2010-11 school year, hundreds of MBRT volunteer
speakers reached 35,000 middle and high school students across
Maryland with in-classroom messages about planning their futures
and the importance of hard work and rigorous coursework in
preserving their options for college and careers.

Through a federal grant partnership with the Maryland Higher
Education Commission, MBRT is expanding its program to provide
services to 10,000 middle school students – and their parents – in 52 high poverty schools in 6 school districts.

Fifty percent of 2010 high school grads qualified as Maryland Scholars (up from 35% in 2007) – a college/
career course of study that includes rigorous math and science requirements. 2011 data is being collected.

BeWhatIWantToBe.com (with 200,000+ student users) and the Be What I Want To Be magazine (90,000
copies distributed annually) give students realistic, pertinent information about college and careers.

MBRT is working to ensure that:
 Forward progress on education reform, achieved during Dr.
Grasmick’s illustrious tenure, continues under Maryland’s next State
Superintendent of Schools.
 Course curriculum is rigorous, consistent across the state and that
graduation requirements are aligned with college/workplace
entrance requirements.
 Robust, accessible data systems are in place to measure progress,
inform instructional decisions, and guide teacher and student action.
Raising standards
and aligning expectations
MBRT is geared up to create the innovations, build the partnerships, and deliver the services that will boost
student achievement and workforce preparedness. We are confident – with your commitment, investment and
involvement – that Maryland students will exceed our expectations.
