INQUA 2019 Field Excursions, 2nd Phase Call.
Firstly, thank you from IQUA for considering organising and hosting an excursion to be associated with the
INQUA 2019 Congress. This ‘Phase 2’ Call follows the pre-INQUA2015 congress Call, and the Irish LOC would
like to thank all respondents to that earlier Call for helping deliver the INQUA2019 Congress to Ireland.
The Fieldtrips will be a vital and hopefully rewarding part of the Congress experience for organisers and
delegates alike. To advance this process, please complete the form below as fully as possible and/or revert to
us with any questions you might have in advance of submitting the form.
The deadline for completed forms is 4th November 2016.
Please note that the INQUA 2019 Congress Local Organising Committee (LOC) are committed to run all
fieldtrips that are advertised as available when Congress registration opens (planned for Autumn 2018). Due
to this, proposals will need to be screened at several stages, and there may be enforced selection stages. The
INQUA2019 LOC Fieldtrip sub-Committee (LOCFC) will conduct an initial screening during November 2016,
which will probably require further consultation with proposed excursion leaders and possibly the provision of
additional information.
To ensure the smooth running of the Congress, excursion proposal leaders and teams are encouraged to
inform the LOCFC or LOC Chair (Dr Bettina Stefanini or Prof. Pete Coxon respectively) at the earliest
opportunity of any circumstances that might prevent the successful hosting of a proposed field trip.
IMPORTANT NOTES: To qualify for final acceptance, proposals will need to have met all standards and
deadlines set out in the document ‘INQUA 2019 field meeting guide’ prior to advertisement in Congress
registration (Autumn 2018), e.g.
Field guides: The Pre- and Post- Congress excursions will require scientifically and aesthetically high quality
field guides. These will be similar in format to the A5 sized guides typically produced by IQUA and the QRA. A
draft outline of the guide will be required by September 2017 and the guides will go to print in July 2018 (this
allows pre-sales, advertising and certainty of production). A single volume ‘Guide to Mid-congress excursions’
will also be printed on the same schedule. NB: Copyright permissions required for material contained within
all guidebooks must be obtained by the guide editors in advance of the September 2017 (draft field guide)
deadline.
Access: A Fieldtrip Lead Organiser (FLO) for each excursion is ultimately responsible for securing all necessary
access permissions and the management of safety risk assessments for all sites visited during the field trip. As
it is intended that the guides will be used beyond the lifetime of the Congress, where possible the trip should
include sites with access by mobility-impaired delegates and with foreseeable public access rights (e.g.
National Parks/Monuments, roadside, shoreline sites) and avoid working quarries & pits. It is understandable
given the nature of Quaternary field sites if this is not possible.
Communication structures: Communications between the LOCFC and the Fieldtrip Organising Committees
(FOCs) will be through FLOs only, as designated on this form (see below). FLOs will be responsible for keeping
their field trip team informed and aware of all upcoming deadlines, guide production stages and other
information issuing from the LOCFC and other relevant committees.
Please submit this form electronically to the Chair of the INQUA2019 LOCFC: [email protected].
