Title: Behavior Tips Theme: Behavior Date and Tip Number: April 21, 2015 #26 As we were talking with someone who focuses his work on behavior, we asked for tips on the subject and he had two things to share. They are easy to remember and helpful. 1. BE CONSISTENT Be consistent between staff. Be consistent over time. Be consistent on reinforcement delivery. Be consistent on delivery of plan. o If they do this, then you do this. Every day – Every time. What gets you in trouble on Monday will get you in trouble on Thursday. o If they are doing well, don’t stop. If working continue the plan. o Student may not be ready to let go of the plan or supports and that is why it’s working. o Revise plans when necessary with the whole team. o Be sure you know and understand the student's plan – ask the roster teacher for a copy so you can read it. 2. Q-Tip – Quit Taking It Personally Something can happen before school. o Student wanted to wear their favorite red polo and had to wear a blue polo. You didn’t make them mad but you will get behavior at school. o Student stayed with another guardian for the night and they let them stay up, drink pop and watch movies. At school they are not very motivated and you’re trying to figure it out. o Sometimes negative behaviors that take place in school are a reflection of an event that occurred outside of school. Because we have built relationships with the students we sometimes wonder, “Why they are acting this way? We usually work so well together.” Remember: It’s not you, it is the situation.
