PRESIDENTS REPORT
After several years as Junior Convenor, this season is my first as President. I
still keep a close eye on our juniors as they are the future of our club. Bryan
Botha is the new face on the committee having taken on the role of
Junior Convenor. We are fortunate to have a Junior Convenor with his
energy and enthusiasm.
Governance
Myself and other committee members have been attending a
Governance course aimed at local sports clubs (we are the only tennis
club on the course). The course is organised by Hutt City Council and
presented by Sport Wellington. It is interesting hearing how other local
sports clubs face the same issues we do – membership numbers, getting
volunteers, funding, etc. There is a wealth of information and good ideas
coming out of the course which we will be putting to use.
Avalon Park Proposal
The Hutt City Council wishes to sell the undeveloped land around our club
and use the proceeds to offset the $5million cost of the Avalon Park
Development. The committee has sent a submission to council expressing
our concerns such as drainage, noise and dust during the development
stage, creation of wind tunnels, adverse visual effect, etc. We have also
asked that the land we lease from council (car park, courts 3,4,5,6) be
classified as Recreation Reserve.
Let me know if you would like a copy of our submission.
Avalon Intermediate Sports Expo
Bryan Botha represented our club at the Avalon Intermediate Sports Expo.
This was organised by Hutt City Council and featured several local sports
clubs. We gave away free coaching sessions which were accepted by
several participants.
Grants
Last season we started repairing the fences. We are hopeful of getting
further grants to carry on with the fencing work. This season we received
grants for tennis balls ($1792 from Pub Charity) and junior coaching ($3000
from Infinity Foundation). Because of these grants we have money
available to put into our court replacement fund.
Like many sports clubs we are very dependent on member’s subscriptions
and although most members paid their subs on time we did have to
chase a few of you up.

Mitchell Park Complex
You may have read that Hutt Valley Tennis has lodged a submission with
Hutt City Council requesting assistance to redevelop the Mitchell Park
Complex and in particular the clubhouse. This is as a result of the squash
club’s decision to move to Fraser Park. As an affiliated member of Hutt
Valley Tennis we are very interested in what will happen once the squash
club leaves and what that will mean for us.

Volunteers
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the running of the club,
helped with events, managed teams, tidied the grounds, promoted our
club, coached our juniors, the list goes on.
If you have any ideas or skills to help the club and can spare some time
we’d love to hear from you.
Clubhouse
The interior of the clubhouse is looking tired. We are wanting to freshen it
up with a coat of paint, new Honours Boards, store the old photos and
certificates and replace them with brighter recent ones. Any volunteers?
Thank you for taking the time to read this report. I look forward to seeing
you at the AGM.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT
INTERCLUB
Avalon fielded five teams for the Pre-Xmas Interclub competition, this was
the same number as the previous season.
Here are the final results.
TEAM
Wellington Men Premier 3
(Captain – Richard/Jason)
Hutt Valley Men Division 1
(Captain – Daniel Beilby)
Hutt Valley Men Division 2
(Captain – Richard Massam)
Hutt Valley Men Division 3
(Captain – Josh Hood)
Hutt Valley Women Division 1
(Captain – Deanne Ives)
PRE-XMAS 2014

POST-XMAS 2015
6th
7th

3rd
5th
6th
( Division 1)
6th
3rd
2nd
Overall this was a challenging season for most of the Avalon teams, the
Women’s Div1 being the exception with good results in both rounds.
The Division 2 Men’s finished 3rd Pre Xmas, but gained promotion to
Division 1 for the Post Xmas round as a result of the new rules that require 3
teams promoted from each Division in order to form the Premier 4 grade
Post Xmas.
The down side to this is that Division 2 and 3 had to combine Post Xmas
due to there not being enough teams left in Division 3 for a viable
competition.
Our Premier Men’s team had a solid Pre Xmas round but struggled with
player availability Post Xmas. This team is very much in a transition phase
as the experienced players from previous years were largely unavailable.
The younger members of the team are making good progress, with Trent
Massam continuing to post excellent results winning 8 out of his 10 singles
matches.
For the majority of our teams, player unavailability for one reason or
another was a major issue, the positives are that we have seen the
continued improvement of some of the younger players that have come
through the grades.
Unless we can entice more players next season, we may need to look at
combining the two current Division 1 teams in order to have a competitive
team in this grade and give us cover for the higher grade.
6
Thank you to all the team captains and players for your contribution
through- out the season and we hope to see you back next time.

Finally on a personal note, after 17 seasons of managing and organising

someone else.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has helped
and assisted me over this period and wish you all well in the future.

JUNIOR REPORT
Introduction
During the 2014/15 season we welcomed several new junior members.
We currently have 59 junior members, of whom 38 are playing in the Hutt
Valley junior interclub competition.
Coaching
Our Sunday morning coaching sessions ran from the beginning of
September 2014 to April 2015, with a break for the summer school
holidays. Sessions were well attended with between 15-40 juniors
attending each Sunday.
Wednesday training took place between 4 and 6pm. These sessions were
attended by most Interclub players on a regular basis.
Junior interclub awards
This season we started with 3 girls’ teams and 4 boys’ teams competing in
the Hutt Valley Junior Interclub pre-Christmas competition.
We then entered a new girls’ team for the post-Christmas competition, so
we finished with 4 girls’ teams and 4 boys’ teams.
Pre-Christmas results
 Boys Premier B (Babolat) – finished 2nd and were promoted to
Premier A
 Boys Division 1 (Crosscourt) – finished 3rd
 Boys Division 2 (Dunlop) - finished 4th
 Boys Division 3 (Puma) – finished 7th
 Girls Premier B (Adidas) – finished 1st and were promoted to Premier
A
 Girls Division 1 (Backhand) – finished 3rd
 Girls Division 2 (Wilson) – finished 4th but then lost a play-off match to

So overall a great season with: 2 teams being promoted, 2 just missing out
and 1 team being relegated.

I would like to thank all the managers who helped getting all the matches
played and teams together every Saturday morning.
Secondly, thanks to all of the junior members for coming along to
coaching and to those junior members that played in an Interclub team.
Thanks also to all the family members that come along to coaching and
interclub matches.
Goodbye
After a year as junior convenor I need to, unfortunately, resign to further
my studies. If the new Junior Convenor wishes, I’ll try help with the initial set
up of teams and the Labour Day, ladder day.
Best wishes
Bryan Botha

MIDWEEK REPORT
Club mornings have been well supported this year throughout both the
summer and winter seasons with mostly fine, sunny mornings and of course
lots of home baking for morning tea. It is good to see so many attending
regularly. Welcome to our new members Lin, Mary, Jenny, Joan and
Alison.
We again entered four teams in the Midweek interclub competition and
had a very successful season with two teams finishing first, one second
and one third. These results contributed to Avalon winning the Midweek
Interclub Cup for best club overall and Lynley Conroy winning best player.
This was a fantastic effort by all our interclub players.

Congratulations also to Pam Roselli and Rangi Ainuu for winning their pool
at the end of season tournament at Mitchell Park.
Thank you to all team captains Kim, Nola, Cookie/Robyn and Lynley/Chris
for doing a great job organising players and reserves over the season and
thanks to all our reserves for helping out when needed especially Lin Willis
who filled in more than once for the C Grade team winning most of her
games.
10
We look forward to the upcoming season and hope to see everyone
back. It is the support of all our midweek members that makes Tuesday
morning club day the success that it is.
