Yukigassen!! Here is the recipe for victory! ■ Apparel 1. Clothing : Above all, comfortable clothes that make moving around easy are BEST! Ski and snowboard apparel is alright. However, bulky clothing make it easier for the opponent to hit you so it is not the best choice. 2. Shoes : Running shoes, or rubber boots are fine, but you should have a change of shoes ready as well. 3. Gloves : There are no regulations regarding gloves, ski gloves or working gloves are fine. ■ Basic Rules 1. Each team is made of 7 players, one coach.(only players is okay too.) Players consist of 4 forward players (wearing black numbers 1-4), and 3 back players. (wearing red numbers 5-7) Each round consists of 3, three minute sets. (the team to win the first two sets wins) Each team must pull out the opponent's flag or gain the most points by hitting the other team with snowballs within 3 minutes. Then that set is finished. If time runs out for the set, (after 3 minutes)the team with the most players left is the winner. A player is "out" when hit by a no-bound snowball, and must step outside of the court. (he then can no longer play in that set) A player is out if hit by his own ball that leaves his hand, or if he is hit by his own team mate. The number of snowballs per each set is 90. (Only the snowballs that were made prior to the beginning of the match) If you make a snowball with snow around you, you are automatically out. Only 3 players are allowed to enter the opponent's territory. (the team automatically loses if 4 or more players enter) No other player can enter the opponent's territory unless one of the first 3 are out and have moved outside of the court. All players must obey the instructions of the umpire. If you are called "out", please move immediately to the outside of the court. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. ■ The Yukigassen Court and other terms Your opponent's territory Your territory Direction of invasion Side Line Chateau Center Line No.2 Shelter No.1 Shelter Center Shelter End Line Back Line Copyright (C) 2009 Showa-Shinzan International Yukigassen Executive Committee ■ At the start of each match a b c d e f g Snowball storage 1. 2. 3. Teams will store their snowballs behind the shelter, then line up in front of the backline with snowballs in hand. The match begins at the sound of the umpire's whistle. As soon as the match begins, snowballs will be flying around, so it would be a good idea to decide who moves to what position as soon as the balls they have are gone, beforehand. If you are just standing around, you will get hit before you know it. ■ Standard positions Back line eb a f g c d Snowball storage 1. According to rules, the forward players 1-4 cannot retreat behind the backline. For this reason, they cannot go back to the snowball storage. The back side players must replenish the snowballs for the forward players. The players must either roll the balls to the forward players, or deliver them. No-bound passes or tosses are not allowed.(Please refer to No. 3 of the basic rules section.) ■ Attacking positions c f g b d e a 1. Which ever team that captures the shelter closest to the opponent's territory to take the flag or attack the opponent has the advantage. Forward players should especially try to get the shelters in the front. Copyright (C) 2009 Showa-Shinzan International Yukigassen Executive Committee ■ How do you make the snowballs? Well, the snowballs for this tournament are made with a special Snowball-maker. It actually takes a lot of muscle, but please accept the challenge. ■ The secret to victory! 1. 90 snowballs sounds like a lot, but is not very many in fact?! When everyone is throwing the snowballs from the start of the match to when it ends, often you run out of snowballs. So, be sure to think about how to distribute these balls within 3 minutes. 2. Try to focus on getting the snowballs to the forward players. No matter how fast a ball you can throw, it is difficult to hit the opponents from way in the back. The back side players should concentrate on getting the snowballs to the forward players, and the forward players then attack. This is a more efficient way to attack. 3. Straight balls only will not do the job!! You are going to have a hard time hitting the guys behind the shelter if you only throw straight balls. Try to hit the players behind the shelter with curving balls that go up and then down over the shelter. When you can throw a ball that barely skims the shelter, you will have joined the elite players! 4. Do not take your eye off of your opponent. The key to not getting hit, is to always be looking at the opponent. Turning your back or looking down is a sure way to get marked! 5. Players who get bombarded don't stand a chance! Everyone attacking one single player is also effective. Although it may be easy to avoid one snowball coming at you, but trying to duck from a whole lot of balls at once is not so easy. It is also effective to come up with your own signs that the other team cannot know. For example, someone yells out "6,1,3,4,5" and everyone attacks the player with the last number called. Now, lets all go out and fight for victory!!! Copyright (C) 2009 Showa-Shinzan International Yukigassen Executive Committee
