Dear Colleague,
The Benevolent Fund wants your help to assist pharmacists in need. By taking part in our 2013
Annual Confined Draw, you could win €4,000 while supporting current and former colleagues and
their families who are experiencing difficult times and need our help.
Our social worker, Mary Dowd, makes direct contact with those who are in need. Along with our
Case Committee, she works to give them a dignity and quality of life. This ranges from ongoing
financial support or one-off help with a fill of heating oil or large household repair to simply being a
friendly face calling to the door or providing advice on social welfare entitlements.
There are two draws with five prizes per draw (€4,000, €3,000, €1,000 and €500 x 2). To take part, all
you have to do is send us a single subscription of €250 by standing order, cheque, postal or money
order. Whilst enjoying a little flutter, you will be helping a lot.
The Draw is a most important source of income for the Benevolent Fund. Income is also raised
through a Golf Classic, a contribution from the Helix Healthcare Pharmacist Awards, donations and
direct contributions from events such as the raffle at the IPU National Pharmacy Conference Dinner
and an RCSI Treasure Hunt for staff and students during the summer. Others ways to help including
benefiting the Benevolent Fund in your will or to donating an honorarium.
Over the past five years the Benevolent Fund has dispersed over €500,000. In 2011 we raised
approximately €100,000. While this was slightly more than was spent, the demand for financial
support from the Fund has increased again this year and it is vital that we continue to generate
sufficient funds to meet the demand for help.
Thanks are due to all who assist with the Benevolent Fund, our social worker Mary Dowd and all
who made donations or who participated in the Golf Classic, Confined Draw or other fundraising
events in the past year. I want to particularly thank two pharmacists for their amazing fundraising
efforts for the Fund this year, namely Keith O’Hourihane who ran a Pharmacy Race Night in
September and Jo Crowley for giving us half the proceeds of his epic fundraising walk of the Camino
de Santiago in Spain.
We depend on you to inform us of people who might need our help. If you know of a colleague or
someone from the wider area of our profession who needs help, call the PSI or the IPU or any of us
who are involved in the Fund. Information is handled in strict confidence.
Please do join our Annual Confined Draw today and make a difference to the lives of colleagues in
need. We are always looking for new volunteers would be delighted to welcome on board anyone
who would like to get involved in the work of the Fund, even on a very small scale.
Yours sincerely,
Aisling Reast MPSI
