How does all this “play” relate to the curriculum? ‘Play’ is the process and means by which things are taught and how children learn. Arriving at Nursery… • When we arrive we: - find our peg - hang up our coat - change into our indoor shoes - find our names to register in nursery Free Play During Free Play time, we have all sorts of activities to choose from. These change frequently depending on the needs and interests of the children. They include: Role play This varies depending on the children’s interests - house/kitchen - flower shop - supermarket - Vet surgery - Police station - Doctors surgery Art and Craft This includes: - painting - printing - clay - junk modelling Sensory - Water/ice/snow - broth mix and flour - shaving foam - gloop - lentils - Playdough - Exploring outdoors Book Corner & Library - storybooks - nursery rhyme books - number and shape books - information books - comics ICT • computer programmes which include number, shape, colour, etc.. • Bee bot • Remote control car • Torches • Digital camera • Smartboard • Supervised use of the internet for investigation Writing Table With: • paper of various colours • crayons and chalks • pencils and pens • scissors • glue • envelopes and stamps • paper clips • paper punch • sticky tape etc. Numeracy and Maths We ensure we have numeracy opportunities throughout the nursery such as; • • • • • • numbers, shapes, pattern games Money, size, measurement, weight number matching games memory game picture matching games number counting games Climbing frame Seesaw Large wooden blocks Tricycles Trim Trail Physical Play Snack Time A social experience where children share food together and sometimes make food. Sometimes we have snack all together. Sometimes snack is open when children can choose when they would like to come for snack. Children post their names once they have had snack so we can monitor who has had snack. We also offer special snacks to celebrate various festivals/occasions; Diwali – Indian food Burns Night - Haggis, Neeps and Tatties Chinese New Year – Noodles All together time We will do all together time everyday, this may be used for • News time • Show and tell • Mind mapping This helps us practise our listening and talking skills Outdoor Play Anything offered inside could be outside alongside specific outdoor resources e.g. bikes, cars, hoops etc Toothbrushing With your permission your child will brush their teeth during the nursery session. We follow the guidelines given to us from Childsmile. We also use the gym hall Home time • We put on our own shoes and jackets • The children are encouraged not to leave until their name is called. • Sign in / Sign out sheets – please contact if there is a change to pick up name. • Flexible hours children who are being collected out of session times are to be collected at the office. How do I keep up to date with what’s happening in Nursery? • Nursery Handbook • Please make time to read the Parents’ Noticeboard in the cloakroom area. How Can I Be Involved In Nursery? • • • • • • • Nursery blog by helping your child at home parent helper in Nursery and on trips stay and play/open afternoons Parents evening/afternoon sharing your own knowledge/interests Parent Council Speak to staff! Learning Journey The folder will contain the following sections: • ‘All About Me’ • ‘Steps on my Learning Journey’ (3 core curriculum areas) • Evidence of learning (including observations) across the 8 curricular areas Formal Report at end of year Being prepared • Indoor shoes • Suitable clothing for being indoors and outdoors • Change of clothing • Sun cream applied in the morning • ALL items labelled • Discourage own toys Thank you for coming along. For children allocated a AM session or flexi session please come along from 10 – 11 am For children allocated a PM sessions please come along from 1.30 – 2.30 pm. School opens -Tuesday 15th August
