Victoria Junior School
characters and pupils shared their
favourite stories.
A Celebration 2015-2016
The month ended with a visit from
the History Detectives whose show
enabled pupils to gain an
understanding of the events in the
past.
Once again we have had a very
successful year, full of events to
develop the pupils learning and
enjoyment.
September
In September we welcomed our new
starters who have been a credit to
the school. A really
conscientious, hardworking, caring
group of pupils.
Osiligi Warriors made a visit to
the school to talk about where and
how they lived. This is their
second visit and is truly is a
memorable one.
October
Primary Puppets made their annual
visit to the school. Religious
stories and moral themes are
brought to life through the
puppets and storytelling of the
group they are a real treat.
“Victorian Day” arranged by
Workington Academy focused on the
writings of Dickens and was
attended by Y6.
Harvest Festival: This is a
special and annual event lead by
Y5 at St Michaels Church. All
donations from our parents are
sent on to the church and used in
the food banks.
Y3 had their first educational
visit to Penrith.
We said a sad goodbye to Canon
Rowe however we have continued our
link with St Michaels Church where
we celebrate key religious events.
In September the pupils in Y6
attended a Science show and made
the journey to Manchester to
attend one of the live football
matches.
Poetry Performance by all classes
marked poetry month. We have had
some wonderful verse speaking from
the pupils.
This was the time of year when we
planted the daffodil bulbs and
what a show we had this year.
Our Police Safety Talk prepared
our pupils for keeping themselves
safe.
Macmillan coffee morning was a
special event and very well
attended.
Y5 began bowling, attending the
Bowling ground to strengthen these
skills
Roald Dahl day was celebrated in
the usual way, dressing up as
NOVEMBER
Workington Festival: Every year
our choir enters the local
festival have had
recognised.

The annual Bonfire event at the
school was very well supported by
the community.
Remembrance: pupils always pay
their respect and take the time to
reflect.
Y3 and Y4 Cinema event the pupils
all enjoyed Shaun the Sheep.
German Residential every year

Christmas parties and Christmas
dinner always play a special part
in this time of year and as we
remembered the real meaning of
Christmas we all attended the
annual service at St Michaels lead
by the pupils in Y3.
January
Enterprize events: this is the
time of year when these events are
launched. Every year pupils are
given the opportunity to design,
plan and implement ways of raising
money from a given sum. Well done
to our group of volunteers who
worked together and successfully
raised over £800.
This month saw the start of all
our sporting events and
competitions multi-skills, tennis,
athletics, hockey, football clubs
and events all began.
Tullie house Y4 visit was made to
strengthen their knowledge of
local history.
Pupils are all taught to stay safe
and this is a week when dedicated
time is given to this aspect of
learning.
December
Our Christmas show was another
great success with every pupil
given the chance to take part.
St Michael’s fundraising concert.
Many of our pupils joined with the
Infant school and put on a concert
in the parish halls raising over
£300 for their charity.
Maths puzzle day was a great event
when all pupils had the
opportunity to work as teams and
solve maths problems.
Y5 visit to St Joseph’s school and
experience a Financial Capability
Day.
February
This was a special month as every
pupil experienced “Heartstart” and
had a session on CPR giving them
the skills to save a life.
Lego League Robot competition.
This competition gave a group of
pupils an opportunity to enter a
competition with their robot
designs and were very successful.
March
U Dance was a great event held at
the Carnegie when a group of
schools came together to dance.
This year we were supported by
West lakes Academy.
Y5 visit to Chester Zoo: A visit
to support the topic.
Sky Blue theatre Shakespeare week:
Shakespeare week is recognised
every year and this year we
invited a performing arts company
to engage with the pupils and
bring alive stories by
Shakespeare.
Talent show; Every year the school
has a wonderful talent show event
this year was another great
success.
Rock Challenge: Another main event
in our calendar is Rock Challenge
we enter Y5/Y6 in “Count on Me”
and Y3 with Y2. This year we were
winners with our performance of
“Make you feel my love”.
Gymnastics final at Netherhall.
This was the first year of entry
and the pupils did really well.
The school now has a gymnastics
club that meet every week.
World book day: Reading has a
special place in the school and we
encourage all pupils to enjoy
books. On world book day all
pupils received a book from the
school.
Kwick Cricket week: Developing
physical skills comes through
physical activities and this is
one that the pupils particularly
enjoy.
April
Enterprize Bright Stars final:
This was the day when the pupils
entering the competition were
judged and whilst they did not win
their efforts were recognised.
Professor brainstorm: Science is
made exciting by professor
brainstorm who visits the school
to demonstrate practical science
and involve the pupils.
Orienteering Begins this month and
pupils enjoy this regular activity
when they meet with other schools
and develop their orienteering
skill.
May
Mayor’s parlour: The Mayor was
very kind to invite some of our
pupils to the parlour and gain an
understanding of the work that
they do.
Whitehaven festival: Another
successful event when the choir
won four trophies well done choir.
Castle head: Y4 annual
residential, this is an excellent
event that is offered to all Y4
pupils.
Radio Cumbria Music Day: The radio
station set up a recording studio
in the school and the recordings
were broadcast on Cumbria’s Music
day.
Horse riding competition: Well
done to two of our pupils who were
entered in a

Exchange students from Germany
spent a week with our pupils.
Greek event: this was a very
special event when the pupils
celebrated their learning about
the beginning of the Olympics in
Greece. It ended with a
fabulous
chariot race.

Queens birthday: We never miss an
opportunity to dress up
Y6 London visit: Year 6 pupils
spent a busy week enjoy and
learning about life in London
certainly a residential to repeat.
This year we held for a week the
“Uppies and Downies” replica ball
in aid and recognition of Autism.

Junior School this year, there
