Anglia Ruskin University celebrates 25th anniversary, unveils new
strategy plan
On 16 June 2017, Anglia Ruskin University marked the 25th anniversary of attaining university
status.
A message from the Vice Chancellor Prof Iain Martin (above) declared:
“Today we launch our new strategy Designing our Future 2017-26. This sets out the high-level
principles that will guide and shape our university in the coming years. The use of the word
design in the title was a deliberate decision…it is linked to the concept of design thinking,
bringing together the needs of students and our wider community, the possibilities opened up
by new technology and the need for constant innovation.
“Our success will be defined by the positive impact we have on the lives of our students and the
communities we serve. By weaving together our values, our approach to addressing challenges
and prioritising those areas where we can make the greatest impact, we will create a distinctive
university that is entrepreneurial in nature, strongly focused on our students and fully inclusive
of all who want to study, work or partner with us”.
HELP CAT is proud to be a partner of Anglia Ruskin University in the delivery of valued
bachelor’s programmes in Business, Accounting & Finance, Engineering, IT and Computer
Science.
The first batch of bachelor’s and the second batch of MBA graduates received their degree
scrolls in early May 2017. Three of the bachelor’s graduates attained First Class Honours results.
Happy birthday Anglia Ruskin University from the President, staff and students of HELP CAT.
Ghugan Mohan scores top marks in CAT exam
Ghugan Mohan (above), a Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) student at HELP College of Arts
and Technology, scored the top mark of 96% in MA1 (Management Information) in the recent
CAT exam. That represents the best score in Malaysia and second best in the world.
Congratulating Ghugan on his superb score, Mr David Lam, Director of the Centre for
Professional Accounting Programmes (CPAP) at HELP CAT, said he and the staff at CPAP were
proud and honoured by this outstanding achievement. “Surely your parents are over the moon!
You did well for yourself, your family and you did us proud too”.
Ghugan is from SMK Bukit Bandaraya in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. He was a science stream
student, but took Prinsip Perakaunan (Principles of Accounting) in his SPM and scored A+ in the
subject. This gained him an exemption from the CAT paper Financial Accounting. His total score
in the SPM exam was 5 A+ and 5 As, making him the best SPM student of that year in SMK Bukit
Bandaraya.
Asked about the secret of his success, Ghugan said he liked Management Information a lot,
having to do with cost accounting, and management and production costs. His practice was to
go through the revision/exercise questions in the textbook every week, and to seek the
lecturer’s help if he got the answers wrong. Fairly simple, but Ghugan also made it a point to
understand the concepts well, so at exam time he could understand the questions while other
students would revise and read at the last minute. We join the CPAP team in offering our
congratulations to Ghugan.
HELP CAT showcases works by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo Self Portrait with Monkey; labelled the Queen of
self-portraits, Kahlo said, ‘I never paint dreams or nightmares.’
In the manner of continually essaying a lively cultural scene on campus, HELP CAT organised a
two-month exhibition of works by the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in collaboration
with the Mexican Embassy in Malaysia.
Alone among private institutions of higher learning, HELP CAT has collaborated with numerous
embassies and cultural agencies to evolve into a strong centre of culture with exhibitions, film
screenings, exotic culinary sessions and language learning that enrich the life of the local
community and diversify the learning experience of its students.
The Artist
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was inspired by Mexican popular culture. She employed a naïve folk art
style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican
society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with
fantasy. Her work has been celebrated internationally as emblematic of Mexican national and
indigenous traditions.
Frida Kahlo is best known for her self-portraits which give intimate testimony to her years of
physical and emotional pain, as well as her strength and acceptance.

it was because of your hair. Now that you are without hair, I don’t love you anymore’.
