West Central Cincinnati Team Leader Manual Thoughts on Being Team Leader Learn how to delegate amongst your team and do it often. Find your teammates strengths and non-strengths and fit people into good roles. Include your team in decisions. Team leader is not an authority position. It is one where you lead and facilitate. Know that the Lord has appointed you for this position and that if He puts something on your heart then you have an obligation to follow. Always write thank you notes to anyone who does anything for YL at your school. You must be above reproach in all that you do. Lots of people are watching you at all times. (Kids, Parents, Your Team, Other Team Leaders, Younger Leaders, Friends who don’t understand YL, etc.). Say no when you can’t do something. Set the bar high for your teammates. Expect them to rise to the standards that you live and set. Try to do something outside of YL with your teammates every so often. Utilize the resources you have (staff, the YL office, other team leaders, older leaders, etc.). Know that you will make mistakes and you will fail your team at some point. If you didn’t fail, you wouldn’t need Christ. Return phone calls and emails as soon as you can. Pray for your teammates every day. Don’t take being team leader too seriously but do everything you can to do a good job. Don’t take responsibility for your teammates mistakes – Let them know when their performance wasn’t acceptable. When they screw up, make sure to ask them (one on one): Is something going on that made you unable to get that done? Is there some way our team needs to help you? Have team meetings in a private place where you won’t be interrupted. Be in touch with your host families. Thank them. Share with them. Know that the success/failure of YL at your school does not rest on you. It’s your responsibility to help develop and maintain an Ambassador team in your community. It will benefit you, your team and the ministry to have good parent support in your community. It’s your job to be in contact with staff. When we ask for something, please get it to us when we ask for it.
