Intermediate League & Championship Reports ‘08 ACL Division 2 Tubberclair 0-11 Tang 0-11 Tubberclair and Tang played out a lively draw on Friday night last in the park. Tubberclair opened strongly and took a early grip of the game but only found scores hard to come by. Tang gradually got a foothold and they opened up a lead of 0-3 to 02 mid way through the first half. Tubberclair had eoin Slevin to thank for not being further behind as he pulled off two great saves. Tang also hit the bar with a goalbound effort. The teams exchanged points for the remainder of the first half and a well worked Jeffrey Farrell score earned Tubberclair the lead going intothe break. At half time, the score was 0-7 to 0-6. The second half was a low scoring affair with Tubberclair again opening strongly to lead by 0-10 to 0-7 with ten minutes remaining. Thanks in the main to the boot of Niall bannon, Tang clawed back the lead and drew the game level with minutes remaining. This was how the game finished and it was a fair result in the end. Tubberclair played good cohesive football in patches but were out-of-sorts for parts of the game also and allowed Tang back into it. Team and scorers Eoin Slevin, Enda Dooley, Robert Buckley, David O’Brien, Niall walker, Alan Connaughton, Jimmy Martin (0-1), Francis Spollen (0-1), Tom Doogan, Beano Cassells, John Reid, rory Walsh, Paul O’Brien (0-3), Jeffrey Farrell (0-5), Daniel sammon (0-1). Subs used Mark Fitzgibbon, Conor Elliott. Sean Spollen Memorial Tournament Tubberclair 3-10 Ballymore 4-8 In the second round of games in the tournament, Tubberclair fell by the narrowest of margins to an impressive Ballymore side on Sunday evening. This high scoring and very entertaining encounter was in doubt up to the last kick of the ball but Ballymore probably edged it over the hour. The sides traded points early on and a well dispatched Daniel Sammon penalty followe by an excellent Dermot Sammon point put four points between the sides at the midpoint of the first half. However, Ballymore totally dominated the remainder of the first half and led by 1-6 to 1-5 at the break having scored a well taken goal of their own. The second half began badly for Tubberclair as two quickfire goals for Ballymore left them eight points up and coasting to victory. A super Daniel Sammon goal gave the home side renewed hope but an opportunist goal on the restart for Ballymore again opened up a cushion. This was to be ballymores last score. To their credit, Tubberclair battled gamely for the last ten minutes and whittled away the lead with well taken points. When Liam Doogan rifled home to leave the minimum between the sides, the comeback looked on. Tubberclair had some chances but unfortunately the final whistle came too soon and Ballymore ran out winners. Team Eoin Slevin, Kevin Doogan, Enda Dooley, Barry Cassells, Ronan Walker, Alan Connaughton, Liam Doogan (1-0), Tom Doogan (0-1), John Reid, Sean kenny (0-2), david cassells (0-1), Rory Walsh, Dermot sammon (0-1), Kevin connaughton (0-1), Daniel Sammon (2-4) Maryland 0-9 Caulry 0-8 Maryland edged a hard fought second game which while low scoring was a very good game of football also. A 50 yard free sealed the win for Maryland from Calum McCormack. Caulry can consider themselves unlucky not to have gained something from the game but can be encouraged by their display. Sean Spollen Memorial Tournament The inaugural Sean Spollen tournament kicked off on Tuesday night when Tubberclair hosted Caulry in the opening game. Tubberclair began the game well with the forwards looking very lively. Thanks to pre-dominantly the boots of Paul O'Brien and Daniel Sammon they opened up a commanding half time 0-7 to 0-2 lead despite kicking many wides. The second half was barely a minute old when a Sean kenny screamer found the back of the net and Tubberclair built well on this momentum. Playing some nice fluid football, they rattled off nine points in an improved second half performance. Caulry battled manfully but the concession of the goal early in the second half was a hammer blow to them. Tubberclair ran out winners on the flattering scoreline of 1-16 to 0-4. Best for Tubberclair were Enda Dooley, Alan Connaughton, Tom Doogan and John Reid while the full forward line were a constant menace. Team Eoin Slevin, Ronan Walker, Enda dooley, barry Cassells, Rory walsh, Alan Connaughton, Robbie Buckley, Tom Doogan, John Reid(0-1), John Cassells (0-2), Kevin connaughton, Sean Kenny (1-0), Daniel Sammon (0-3), Paul O'Brien (0-8), david cassells (0-1). Subs used. Liam Doogan, kevin Doogan, David Martin, Mark Kenny (0-1). Intermediate Round-up. On a busy week for the adult teams, there was mixed fortunes. The intermediates played Ballinagore on Tuesday night and Tang in the Galvin Cup replay on Saturday evening. The game v Ballinagore was encouraging and there were some very good performances. However, the Tang game proved less satisfactory as Tubberclair were beaten by seven points and can have no complaints about the margin. Tang opened brightly and scored three early goals to give them a perfect platform. However, Tubberclair battled back gamely and reduced the margin to one point. Tang pulled away again though to record a deserved victory. Our thanks to Tang for the invitation into the tournament. The junior side were also fixed to play on Tuesday night but Milltown could not fulfill the fixture. ACL Division 2 Tubberclair 1-08 Bunbrosna 1-13 Tubberclair suffered their first defeat of the league in Bunbrosna on Sunday evening last. Going into the game, Tubberclair lay at the top of the table but this was always going to be a stern test. Tubberclair made a very promising opening and a well dispatched Jimmy Martin penalty helped them into a 1-4 to 0-1 lead. However, as would be expected Bunbrosna plugged away and gradually pegged Tubberclair back to leave the score 1-5 apiece at the break. Bunbrosna introduced players of the calibre of Peter Tormey, Finian Newman and their substitutions proved instrumental for them. The home side pulled away in the last fifteen minutes to win by the somewhat flattering 5 point margin. This was a good performance from Tubberclair and best were Francis Spollen, Paul O’Brien and Barry Cassells. All County League Division 6 Tubberclair 2-11 St Mary’s 0-7 Tubberclair second team opened their league account with a well deserved win over Rochfortbridge on Tuesday evening last in the park. Having narrowly lost the opening game to Rosemount, the signs were ominous early on as a physically stronger St Mary’s dominated the scoring opening up a 0-3 to 0-1 lead mid-way through the first half. Points from Paul O’Brien, Daniel Sammon and John Cassells drew Tubberclair level at the break with the score standing at four points each. The second half was a very one sided affair with Tubberclair seizing total control and playing some excellent football. They struck a well worked Eoin Harney goal within two minutes of the restart. A brace of points from both Paul O’Brien and Daniel Sammon put daylight between the sides. To compound a miserable second half for St Mary’s, their frustration boiled over and they had two players sent off at this stage in quick succession. Tubberclair continued to pile on the pressure and a cheeky Daniel Sammon goal coupled with scores from Eoin Harney allowed them to run out facile winners. The younger players were prominent throughout in this performance and the game also marked the return to the fold of a few players. Best on the day were Ronan Walker, who was outstanding, Daniel Sammon, Eoin Harney, John Cassells and John Reid. Team Padraig Connell, Kevin Doogan, Michael Healion, Barry Cassells, Eoin Slevin, Alan Connaughton, Ronan Walker, John Reid, Kevin Connaughton, Alan Robbins, Paul O’Brien ( 0-4), David Martin, Daniel Sammon (1-4), John Cassells (01), Eoin Harney (1-2). Subs used Tom Fuery, Dermot Sammon, Tom Slevin. ACL Division 6 Tubberclair 1-08 Rosemount 1-10 Tubberclair second team opened their season with a narrow loss away to Rosemount on Tuesday night last. A youthful Tubberclair side started slowly and Rosemount scored an early goal to settle quickly. Tubberclair plugged away manfully against the physically stronger Rosemount side and remained in touching distance thanks to points from Paul O’Brien, Robert Buckley, Eoin Harney and John Reid to trail by 106 to 0-04 at the interval. Tubberclair showed great heart in the second half and stepped up considerably. Two Daniel Sammon points and an excellent Kevin Connaughton goal drew the sides level mid way through the half. At this stage Tubberclair had the momentum but missed a few chances and Rosemounts experience shone through as they regained the lead late on and held out for the win. This was a very encouraging performance from Tubberclair as it was their first competitive game together this year. Also, it marked the adult debut of some of the players. Next up for the team is a home game v St Mary’s on Tuesday at 8pm . Team Eoin Slevin, Kevin Doogan, Mike Healion, Barry Cassells, Liam Doogan, Alan Connaughton, Eoin Harney(0-1) Robert Buckley(0-1), John Reid(0-1), Rory walsh, Kevin connaughton(1-0), Daniel Sammon(0-2), Ronan Walker, Paul O’Brien(0-2), John Cassells(0-1). Subs Enda Magee, Mark Kenny, David Martin, Dermot Sammon. Intermediate Cup Tubberclair 2-10 Castletown Finea Coole Whitehall1-10 Tubberclair made the long journey to Finea on Saturday last to play the home side in the Intermediate Cup first round. Going into the game, Tubberclair were on a good run of form and were eager to keep the momentum going. Tubberclair opened brightly trading scores with the home side to leave the score two points each after ten minutes. CFCW got a disputed goal at this stage to open up a gap but Tubberclair came back well with some well taken scores to lead at half time by 0-7 to 1-03. Tubberclair had a great start to the second half with a well taken Mark Fitzgibbon goal opening up a lead. To their credit, CFCW plugged away and there was little to choose between the sides. A John Reid goal in the final quarter set up the win for Tubberclair with two late points from Paul O’Brien and Kevin Connaughton ensuring victory. However, a talking point of the game was the very harsh sending off of Jeffrey Farrell with five minutes remaining for an innocuous looking episode. The straight red rules Jeffrey out for 30 days. This sending off followed the sending off of a CFCW player for a headbutt earlier in the game. Also there were many yellow cards issued during the course of what didn’t appear to be a very ill tempered game. In any case, Tubberclair progress to the next round. Scorers Jeffrey Farrell 0-4, Paul O’Brien 0-2, Mark Fitzgibbon 1-01, John Reid 1-0, Francis Spollen (0-1) Division 2 All County League Tubberclair 2-10 Kilbeggan 1-8 Tubberclair ground out a hard earned victory over Kilbeggan on Sunday last to maintain their impressive start to the league. Despite missing a few players, Tubberclair fielded a relatively strong side and opened the scoring with a jeffrey farrell point. Kilbeggan dominated proceedings for much of the first half and opened up a four point lead midway through the half. Paul O'Brien and Jeffrey Farrell (2) added points to close the gap to a single point at the break. Tubberclair could consider themselves very lucky to be only one point down however as Kilbeggan were profligate in front of goal. As has been their trademark, Tubberclair opened strongly in the second half and when Jeffrey Farrell won a penalty, Jimmy martin despatched it with applomb to take the lead against the run of play. Tubberclair capitalised on this and some good scores from David O'Brien and Jeffrey Farrell(2) streched the lead. Kilbeggan fought back and scored two points to lead three points between the sides before levelling with a well worked goal. However, Tubberclair responded and a great mark Fitzgibbon point and a 50 from Jimmy Martin that found its way to the net finished the game off. Tubberclair showed good fight to win this game when it could easily have slipped away from them and are now top of Division 2 at the mid-point of the season. Best on the day were Niall Walker, Mark Fitzgibbon and Paul O'Brien while Jeffrey Farrell was a capable target man. Team Padraig connell, barry cassells, Jimmy Martin (2-0), Stephen Fagan, Liam Doogan, Alan connaughton, Niall Walker, Dobsy O'Brien (0-2), Francis Spollen, Kevin connaughton, Mark Fitzbibbon (0-1), Beano Cassells, Paul O'Brien (0-1), Jeffrey Farrell (0-6), Daniel Sammon. Subs Eoin Harney, Rory Walsh. ACL Division 2 Tubberclair 0-11 Moate 0-8 Tubberclair recorded a hard fought home victory over Moate on Sunday morning last. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, the home team took a long time to settle and looked lethargic for long periods of the first half. Moate opened up with two early points and when Paul O'Brien was brought down for a penalty, the Moate keeper saved well to only concede a point. Things looked ominous for Tubberclair as Moate held the upper hand in most areas of the pitch. Moate scored two further points and missed some good chances with the only reply being a Francis Spollen point. Again the Moate keeper kept Tubberclair at bay with an excellent save from Paul O'Brien. In truth though, Moate were deserving of more than their two point lead at the break with the score standing at 0-4 to 0-2. The half time team talk worked a treat for Tubberclair as they played some excellent football in the second half and opened up the Moate defence by spreading the ball wide. The whole team showed immense improvement and playing into the wind, the link up play was excellent. Tubberclair rattled off 0-9 in the second half with Moate only adding 0-4 to their score. Particularly in the last quarter, Tubberclair pulled away from their opponents gaining the upper hand at midfield. The pick of the scores from Tubberclair were from Beano Cassells and a long range effort from Dobsy O'Brien. Best on the day for the home side were Daniel Sammon, who was solid throughout, Alan Connaughton, Liam Doogan and Paul O'Brien. Team Daniel Sammon, Barry Cassells, Jimmy Martin(0-1), Stephen Fagan, Liam Doogan, Alan Connaughton, Conor Elliott, Dobsy O'Brien (0-1), Jeffrey Farrell (0-1), Kevin Connaughton, Beano Cassells (0-2), Rory Walsh, David Cassells, Francis Spollen (0-4), Paul O'Brien (0-2). Subs used Junior Hopkins, Aenghus Hanna, Stephen Keegan ACL Division 2 Tubberclair 0-14 St Malachys 1-2 Tubberclair recorded a welcome league victory over bogey team St Malachys on Thursday evening last in Tubberclair. On a very wet and windy night, Tubberclair played very well throughout and were excellent value for their win. With the wind at their backs in the first half, they racked up 8 points while Malachys failed to register a score. Tubberclair opened brightly in the second half but Malachys scored 1-1 early on but this was as close as it got. Some excellent interplay into the wind meant the home side extended their lead and ran out facile winners. Daniel Sammon was steady throughout and the back line held the Malachys forwards at bay throughout. The midfiled worked hard throughout and the movement of the forwards made them a handful. Best on the day were Stephen Fagan, Alan Connaughton, Niall Walker and Francis Spollen. Team Daniel Sammon, Barry Cassells, James Martin (0-2), Stephen Fagan, Liam Doogan, Alan Connaughton, Niall Walker, Jeffrey Farrell (0-3), David O'Brien, Rory Walsh, Fergal Wilson, Beano Cassells (0-1), Paul O'Brien (0-2), Francis Spollen (0-5), David Cassells (0-1) Subs used Robert Buckley, Kevin Connaughton ACL Division 2 Tubberclair 0-7 Maryland 0-7 Tubberclair and neighbours maryland opened their league accounts on Saturday evening in the park with a tense draw. The weather conditions were not conducive to good football but both sides battled gamely. It was typical early season stuff with some stray passes evident throughout from both teams. Tubberclair started very brightly and had a few good chances early on but did not raise a flag. Maryland responded well and with some excellent interplay, they opened up a 0-5 point lead after twenty minutes holding the home side scoreless. Tubberclair finished the half well though gaining the upper hand around the middle and starting to win some breaks. A Francis Spollen point opened their account and a Jeffrey Farrell free left the half time deficit at three points. Tubberclair has the aid of a strong breeze in the second half but it was Maryland who opened the scoring. However, Tubberclair got on top at this stage and rattled off four points without reply the pick of which came from the boot of Beano Cassells after an excellent end to end move. This left the sides level on 0-6 points each with ten minutes remaining. Late on Maryland moved a point ahead again with a pointed free but in the closing stages a James Martin 50’ cleared the crossbar to seal the draw. Both sides had chances to win but the draw was a fair reflection of the game. The fitness level of both sides was impressive for the time of year and also the game should bring on both teams as it was a worthwhile tussle. Best on the day for Tubberclair were Michael Healion and Jeffrey Farrell while the full forward line looked lively throughout also. Team Daniel Sammon, Barry Cassells, James Martin (0-1), Michael Healion, Liam Doogan, Alan Connaughton, Niall Walker, Jeffrey Farrell (0-2), David O’Brien (0-1), Rory Walsh, Beano Cassells (0-1), Conor Delaney, Kevin Connaughton, Francis Spollen (0-2), John Cassells. Suns used. Stephen Keegan. Played 3rd March ‘08 Galvin Cup Tubberclair 0-13 Rosemount 1-9 Tubberclair played their opener in the Galvin Cup on Saturday last in Tang. Despite the inclement weather conditions, both teams played some good football. Fielding a somewhat experimental side, Tubberclair started brightly and with the aid of the strong breeze rattled off ten points in the first half. Their lead at half time was only four points however, as Rosemount scored a well worked goal in the closing stages of the first half. Rosemount came out strongly in the second half but some excellent defensive work kept them at bay. Tubberclair’s winning point from the boot of Dobsy O’Brien was worthy of winning any game. Tubberclair can be pleased with this win as the side played well and worked hard throughout. Best on the day were Kevin Doogan, Alan Connaughton, Niall Walker and Robert Buckley. Team Padraig Connell, Kevin Doogan, James Martin, Stephen Fagan, Liam Doogan, Alan Connaughton, Niall Walker, Jeffrey Farrell (0-4), Dobsy O’Brien (0-1), Rory Walsh, Robert Buckley (0-1), Ronan Walker, Paul O’Brien (0-1), Francis Spollen (0-5), Daniel Sammon (0-1). In a very low scoring game, Tubberclair prevailed by six points. Tubberclair totally dominated throughout but could not close out the game. Despite playing below par with a very strong team on paper, the win was secured which leaves them in a strong position. The next two games in this round robin are v Mullingar and Killucan. In a mistake-ridden opening quarter, Tubberclair were very wasteful of possession and trailed by 0-3 to 0-1. A superb mazy run and finish from David Cassells gave Tubberclair the boost they needed and with Tom Doogan tagging on a point, they led by 1-2 to 0-3 going into the break. Just before half time a well worked Kevin connaughton goal opened up a cushion with Tubberclair playing with much more hunger. The second half was a very one sided affair with Tubberclair upping their game further and playing good cohesive football. Indeed Miltownpass only added one point to their half time tally. Daniel Sammon scored 1-2 in the third quarter with points also from john Reid and Kevin Connaughton putting the game beyond the home side. A well taken Tom Slevin goal sealed the win which keeps Tubberclair in contention for promotion. This was the most complete team performance from this side this year especially in the second half.
