High Ropes Adventure Course - WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Leeds City Council Parks and Countryside is wishing to seek your views about a
proposal to build a High Ropes Adventure Course at Temple Newsam estate located
within Menagerie Wood, (the area outlined in blue below).
It is known that a high ropes adventure course can create a premium visitor
experience that can significantly enhance the estate as well as creating new
employment opportunities within the local area.
The aim would be to blend the high ropes course into the natural environment, using
ropes, cable bridges, netting, climbing walls and zip wires between platforms to
create an exciting experience for people of all ages. The following images provide a
representation of what a high ropes adventure course may look like.

Temple Newsam estate is ideally situated and has the potential to accommodate a
high ropes adventure course whilst at the same time help to bring in some
investment to improve parts of the estate as well as providing employment
opportunities within the local community.
People may have a number of questions and some concerns about hosting a high
ropes adventure course at Temple Newsam and to help answer some of these
queries, a series of frequently asked questions has been compiled as follows:
Will it stop access to any part of the estate?
No – the course is built in the trees above the ground, and you will be able to access
the woodland below it.
Will the course be noisy?
No – there are no mechanical noises, the only sound is of people enjoying
themselves in the trees. A noise impact assessment will be undertaken to ensure
the nearest houses will be unaffected.
Will the course attract antisocial behaviour?
No - Experience at other courses show the additional uniformed staff presence has a
positive impact on parks by involving and working closely with local communities.
Will the course damage the ecology or trees?
No – the course is designed to minimise any impact on trees and ecology.
Independent investigations will be carried out to ensure any local sensitivities are
taken into account.
Will the course generate much traffic?
Because the course has a set capacity, car journeys to the site are limited, the
Council will ensure that there is capacity at the site, by improving the existing car
parking space as well as encouraging those to access the site via public transport.
These points will also be considered by the Council as part of any future planning
application process which will also involve a further round of public consultation.
How would you make the course more affordable for disadvantaged groups?
The operator would work closely with the Council to identify those groups to ensure
the site benefits those in the community. There will be opportunities to provide
discounts or a limited number of free tickets to disadvantaged groups as well as
promoting Leeds as a child friendly city where children are valued, supported & enjoy
growing up & look forward to a bright future.
Other opportunities include assisting groups to help meet their own aims and
objectives through active participation and engagement as well as promoting the
health and wellbeing of people.
Has a planning application been made?
A planning application has not been submitted at this moment in time. This
consultation is an informal pre planning application consultation, seeking the views of
the public about the proposal for a high ropes adventure course located at Temple
Newsam. It is likely that the Council will receive a planning application this summer
and if so, there will be another opportunity for the public to comment on a more
formal basis about the proposals as part of any subsequent planning application
process.
What benefits would this bring to Temple Newsam?
Enhancing the visitor attraction through the promotion of this type of outdoor play
facility in Leeds which can be enjoyed by all the family. The facility will also provide
new opportunities for employment as well as bringing in new investment for areas
such as the refurbishment of the public toilets and other infrastructure works within
the estate.
There is also the real potential to create additional volunteer hours to help with minor
maintenance works by working alongside and engaging with local groups. Bringing in
new attractions will offer a wider choice of leisure activity for all.
