“The care, guidance and support of pupils by the
staff is outstanding” OFSTED 2010
Foundation Stage Aims
To create within the setting an enabling
environment for the children to learn and develop to
their fullest potential
To develop a strong partnership between school,
parents and carers
To provide the children with stimulating resources,
relevant to the children’s culture and community
To offer rich learning opportunities through play and
playful teaching
To encourage individual learning and the ability to
make independent choices and initiate ideas through
spontaneous play
To provide an environment that promotes equal
opportunities and celebrates children’s
achievements, both in school and with parents
To provide the foundations for future learning
The Curriculum
In the Foundation Stage the children follow the DfES
Early Years Foundation Stage document and are
provided with experiences to learn through structured
activities, carefully planned and spontaneous play.
Within the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) there
are 3 prime areas of learning and development and 4
specific areas.
Prime areas:
Personal, Social and Emotional
Development
Physical Development
Communication and Language
Specific areas:
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
When your child enters Nursery the focus of teaching
and learning will be mainly on the prime areas. However
as your child progresses through to the end of
Reception the balance of teaching and learning will
gradually shift to cover all 7 areas equally.
If you would like to look at the document or simply talk
about the teaching and learning taking place, please
feel free to speak to any member of staff.
Play, for a child, is work and is very valuable in starting
a child’s early education. Your child might think that
he or she has been playing all day, but really the play
has been carefully developed by skilled staff to ensure
that valuable learning is taking place.
Staff record the children’s learning in a variety of
ways. For example by written observations,
photographs and learning stories (sometimes these
learning stories will be sent home for the child to
share with family, we would be grateful if you would
spare the time to enjoy these with your child, write
your own comments on them and then send them back
into school).
These learning stories and photographs are kept in
individual Learning Journey Books, which are available
for parents to see at any time and are sent home for
you to keep at the end of Reception.
“The way staff observe, assess how well the children
are doing and use this to plan the next steps in learning
is outstanding” OFSTED 2010
From home
to school
In order to help your child make the change from home
to school here are a few practical ways of helping your
child settle in:
Talk about school in a positive way before your child
starts, what fun it will be, new friends they will make
and exciting things they will do.
Teach your child basic skills, such as using the toilet
independently, putting on and taking off their coats,
shoes and socks.
Play, talk and sing songs with your children. Talk to
them about their day and let them know you are
listening.
Make sure your child has had enough sleep. A tired
child becomes upset easily and is not able to learn as
easily.
Please inform school of any changes of events which
may affect your child’s well being.

to the attention of the parents concerned.
Parking:
The school car park is for staff only. Blue badge
holders may access the car park.
There are drop off points either side of the school
gates.
Please do not park on the zig zag lines as this is a
significant danger to children walking in or leaving
school.
Parental involvement:
Parents are always welcome and once your child has
settled you may wish to help in school occasionally or on
a regular basis.
We hold Inspire days in Reception and Stay and Play
sessions in Nursery, where parents are invited into
school to join in activities with their children.
Family Literacy and Numeracy courses are also held
during the year
Childcare:
We have links with Parklands Nursery and Tiger Tots
Nursery.
We run our own Breakfast Club in school which opens
at 8am and is available at a cost of £1 per day or £5 in
advance. If you are interested in using the Breakfast
Club please complete a form at the school office.
And finally:
If you are worried about your child or if your child is
upset about anything, please come and talk to their
teacher.
We hope your time with us will be long and enjoyable.
