WHY WE SHOULD
Follow regulations
Compliance therefore becomes a
critical issue for us at the Port of Cape
Town. In the workplace, compliance
has many benefits such as ensuring
there are no unnecessary expenses, receiving good safety results in
the Platinum Safety League, which
translates to less injuries at work
and a safety-minded workforce, and
satisfied customers due to correct
information and quicker turnaround
times. All these factors contribute to
a more efficient and effective team
proving that compliance can be a winwin situation for the business and the
individual.

M
arch, as many of you will know,
is a big month for us and many
other organisations especially
in relation to financial matters, as
it marks the end of another financial year. Traditionally, this time of
the year is known to be fraught with
tensions and high level of stress. This
is partly due to the nature of activities
that are characteristic of this period,
such as budget planning and / or reviews, and audits to ensure adherence
and compliance with the governing
laws and regulations of the country.
Ensuring that, in the planning and
execution phases, we are compliant
with various requirements as a Stateowned company can mitigate some of
this stress.

10 habits of
happy people
E
veryone is searching for happiness, but what does it mean for
you? Is it wealth, good health, or
perhaps a stress-free job? Sometimes
happiness can be found in the simple
adjustment of our attitudes.
I found this piece by Daniel Ryan Adler
on the Internet. I can associate strongly with his views. He thinks of himself
as the happiest person whenever he
walks into a room, and most people
notice his smile right away. Here are
ten ways to finding yourself as happy
as he is:

n 21 March, South Africans commemorate Human
Rights Day – declared International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by the United Nations.
For many, this day will always be remembered as Sharpeville
Day, remembering the massacre on 12 March 1960 when police mowed down 69 unarmed people and injured 180 others
who refused to carry the dompas identity document meant
for non-white South Africans. Failure to produce, forgetting
the pass at home, or not having the right stamp, meant arbitrary arrest and jail. The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) had
called on African men to leave their pass books at home, go

to the nearest police station and demand to be arrested for
not carrying the dompas. It is said that when police saw the
masses marching towards them, they panicked and opened
fire.

Let it go
Anger spread throughout townships across the country and
more people were killed in the days after Sharpeville. On 21
March 2001, South Africa unveiled the Sharpeville human
rights memorial on the site outside the police station where
the 69 men, women and children were shot. Their names are
all displayed on the memorial plaque
When someone says something notso-nice, just forgive and forget it.
Even when you know the person meant
it, remember that you become stronger by accepting them for who they are
and knowing your capabilities.

The Port of Cape Town is a key destination for passenger / cruise ships, particularly those engaged in round the world cruising – providing excellent direct airline
connections to most parts of the world. Here’s how we have made our passenger
liner terminal more attractive to visitors.

n early 2012, the cruise liner industry was dealt a blow when the Department of Home Affairs forbade all cruise liners from docking inside
the V&A Waterfront, forcing cruise liners to use the unequipped Duncan
Dock at the Port of Cape Town. This caused many cruise companies to cut
Cape Town out of their cruise itineraries, or to reduce their two-day stay
to a one-day visit. With cruise liners being redirected to our commercial
port, it was decided that E Berth would become the new dedicated passenger liner terminal.

eigning top of the Platinum Safety League
at the end of the 2014 season – that’s the
aim of the Cape Marine Stormers. It’s a goal
that they take seriously and are continuouslystriving to reach. The new safety competition
running at our Port is one such initiative that
will not only help us reach number one position,
but will help us achieve our long-term goal of
being branded the safest Port in South Africa.
